Inactiveso i mentioned how Trace is doing so much better on Neocate.
Well now…he is constipated! ugh! its always something isnt it?! i
gave him some dark karo syrup in a bottle which helped. the thing is i
dont want to have to keep doing this… is constipation a permanent
thing on neocate? am i going to need to get him some miralax?this is frustrating.

InactiveWe put karo syrup in every one of Colt’s bottles. Its not so much that is constipating its that because its so broken down that there isn’t as much to digest and poop out. But if you notice him in pain then adding karo is fine. I think Colt liked the taste of it better with the karo in it. Have you tasted it yet? Come on as his mother you should taste the formula he is drinking. No just kidding that is really mean. Its horrible.

Inactiveactually i smelled it and almost threw up.
today i tried to give him ALL neocate and he refused it. i still have to put an ounce of alimentum in there.
so what youre saying is on the neocate they wont poop as often right?
on the alimnetum he pooped like twice a day, what should i expect on
the neocate?August 21, 2006 at 9:58 am #11747Anonymous
InactiveMarisa got very constipated on the Neocate as well. Some here have had
success making it with a bit more water but that wasn’t enough for us. I still
swear by the Fiber Juice but Trace is probably a little too young for that. Did
you speak with the doctor?

InactiveSometimes Colt would go every other day on Neocate. I think talking to your doctor is a good ideal. They may have some better things to do now. I just know when we took Colt to his doctor they recommended Karo in every bottle. Now he is addicted to it and has to have it in his goodstart.

Inactiveour doc knows nothing about this. she is used to dealing with “normal”
babies. im sure she will tell us to either stop the neocate which we
cant do or just use karo.i tracked down a GI at the university of chicago that dr phillips
worked with and called to make an appt only to find out she is on
medical leave till october.today i have to search for a new GI and who knows how long it will be till we have an appt….

InactiveI don’t know how this works, so maybe someone else can chime in on this one, but I’ve heard of putting a little prune juice in with the Neocate.
I would think you’d really want to stay on the Neocate if you noticed a difference.
Have you ever heard of “slippery elm”? You get it at the health food store. I used to put a 1/4 teaspoon in each bottle to help with constipation. It worked like a charm for us. It worked better than Karo or miralax for us. Those caused gas, cramps, and blowouts for my son. Who knows. Every kid is different.

InactiveWe have been doing about 5 mls (1 teaspoon) of prune juice right out of the dropper every other bottle and that has helped a lot. Carter now goes every other day and seems to be doing much better with the constipation on the neocate.

InactiveYes!!! the first 2 weeks were the worst because i guess i didn’t gradually change her over slow enough. I should have mixed the two together longer. It takes awhile for their systems to get used to it. I had to use baby enimas and they prescribed a laxitive probably like miralax called lactulose that I put in the bottles. Also, we made sure she ate prunes everyday. There was also alot of uncomfortable and painful gas because of the constipation. I hope that he gets used to it soon. I never could get used to that black/green poop and the smell of the stuff!

InactiveMy son got & still is very constipated on the Neocate. He was the complete opposite before going on it. The dr. prescribed lactulose 3x’s a day for him.

Inactiveryannsmamma i sent you an email.
but i will ask this to see if anyone else has input.
my son seems better overall now on the neocate but he is so gassy! his
gas seemed under control on the alimentum but now it seems worse. im
confused about this…August 21, 2006 at 10:52 pm #11872Anonymous
InactiveK&t’s mom
whats the difference between lactulose and miralax?
August 21, 2006 at 11:48 pm #11873Anonymous
InactiveI am not sure because I have not given the lactulose to him. I have it just in case but the pharmacist at first refused to fill the script because there is lactose in it. The old ped GI got mad & and said that he should not cause a problem with his MSPI & if I felt uncomfortable about his answer then to give him suppositories.
I take Trevor to the Chiropractor which seems to help him.

InactiveNeocate was a double edged sword for us. It really helped heal her GI tract
at the time but it aggravated her reflux, constipated her and caused trapped
gas (actually, we think that was reflux mistaken for gas). Are you thickening
the Neocate at all?
