InactiveSo we have Marisa’s one-year visit tomorrow evening (6pm) and the doctor
really wants to do her chicken pox and MMR vaccines at that time (and take
blood for iron screening, etc). We are scared to do it and feel badly since
Marisa finally got over this last virus and had one not long before that but I
guess there’s never a good time. We were offered an appointment in 2.5
weeks instead but since the shots have a delayed reaction, I’d be worried
about them bumping up against her first cousin’s first bday party on Sept.
16.
Marisa had a pretty strong reaction to her 2-month shots and even worse to
her 4-month ones – high fever, cranky, achy, etc – but no reaction to her 6-
month boosters… Ack – I feel so badly for the poor girl.

InactiveWith Dylan, we did all shots on schedule. With Carter it is a different story.
I think, because she hasn’t been feeling well, I would only do the Chicken Pox vaccine and hold off on the MMR until next week. If you are just going in for a shot, do you really need an appt? I think you can do the entire one year check up, the one shot, the blood draw for iron levels, and then just go in for the MMR next week. That way they would both be over with, and your reactions should be gone by the birthday party.

InactiveI think that Ann Marie has a good plan! We’re going this afternoon to get Hailey’s chicken pox. Then in 2 weeks our doc will do a menjugate and then at 15 months the MMR.

InactiveWe still have not done Matthew´s because we are in Spain, no other reason… so i have no idea what the reaction will be like but he has never reacted to the shots, so we are hopeful that this is the same because we are going to get them on the 29th of august and sept 1st is my SIL´s wedding!

InactiveI didn’t like the idea of giving he chicken pox and MMR at the same time with my girls so I asked to delay the MMR until 15 months since it’s the one most likely to cause a reaction. I’ll probably do the same with Myles.
I hope her check up goes well. Let us all know how she does!

InactiveThat’s a good idea… Maybe we’ll ask our doctor if he can do chicken pox
tomorrow and MMR at 15 months. I’ll keep you all posted – thanks as
always, everyone!

InactiveSo tonight was our visit. We hated to go because Marisa had been in such
a good mood yesterday and today and was eating well/more table foods
and we were having so much fun. She had a great time flirting with the
nurses and playing in the waiting room. She was 21’3 (just under 50%)
and 28.5 inches (25% – DH and I are both quite short) and head was 60%
– all good. We have the go ahead to switch to whole milk anytime – he
said 18-20 ounces but I would rather do 15-16 or so based on what I’ve
read elsewhere.
He wanted to give the new combined MMR/varicella shot but we declined
since Marisa just recovered from back-to-back viruses and insisted on
only one of the shots now and one at 15 months. Doctor convinced us to
do MMR now because measles is much more serious than pox so we did
that and he also took blood from her finger (he did it quite well and
quickly) to check for anemia, lead, etc. She freaked out (per norm) and
was shaking and couldn’t catch her breath but calmed down in the
waiting room, drank a few ounces from her cup and took at 15 minute
doze in the car on the way home – we got her in her PJs and she drank
another 4 ounces and went right to bed and playing quietly for 5 minutes
with us.
I’m so nervous about a reaction but I know she needs this shot sooner or
later and I’m glad we insisted on not both at the same time at least. He
said reaction would be 7-10 days from now so we’ll just wait and keep
checking on her and see what happens. I’m also holding off on switching
to milk until we’re past the shot reaction timeframe. And despite what he
says I plan to switch slowly – maybe just the morning cup first for a few
days then afternoon, etc.
Thanks everyone for your advice and support!

InactiveI’m glad to hear that her check up went well (other than the blood test…ouch
) and I think you did the right thing doing one shot at a time. This way if there’s a reaction you’ll know which one it was. Neither of my girls had a reaction to the MMR. Hopefully, (fingers crossed) Marisa won’t either.
I think your plan for introducing milk a little at a time is good, too. That’s the way I did it for my girls; a few ounces per day at first, and then gradually more milk and less formula. I hope it goes well.

InactiveGlad to hear that Marisa weighed in well, and that the doc agreed to hold off on one of the shots. Hope that she doesn’t have a reaction. The poor girl has just come off what seems like a string of viruses! We were so scared about it with Sarah, but it went off fine. She didn’t cry when she got the shot, and after, it was like she never even had a shot. Keep us posted.

InactiveGlad to hear that she is doing well on weight etc!! I am curious to know how much Matthew weighs and what his height is (we have given up on head size for now…). I hope she gets no reaction to teh vaccine!

InactiveGlad to hear it went well….
Just wanted to add that Lucas had horrible reactions to his 2 and 4 months shots, so I stopped all shots for six months total until we had more of a handle on his reflux. I just felt it was too much to deal with. Everyone is different….but I’m wondering if these gerdlings have a harder time with shots? Ann Marie, Lucas was early but not as early as your two, do you think early births have an effect?

Keymasterjonah reacted badly to those ‘early’ shots as well…he was full term…not mspi…it might ‘just’ be that reflux and immunizations don’t mix w/ a tiny body

InactiveGlad it went well, Karen!!!
Anne,
Not sure. The CDC recommends that they receive shots on the same schedule and not adjusted for their prematurity. I think because of their compromised immune systems, they are more likely to get the virus’ we are vaccinating them against. Dylan didn’t react too horribly to any of the shots if I remember correctly, and now Carter is just pushing his limits with me
. Our hospital immunology dept is doing all of his shots, and it was a surprise to me to find out that not all the vaccinations have to be the IM injections. There are a lot of sub-cutaneous (sp?) injections that are absorbed more slowly and because the shot doesn’t penetrate the muscle, there is a lot less pain associated with the injection site. Carter didn’t even cry for two of them so far. Some I think, have to still be the IM’s but not as many as the doctors usually give. We really think his reaction was just shock from the Pertussus. It used to happen a lot more than it does now as they changed the preservative in the shot or something, but it does still happen.
How has Lucas been on his vaccinations?

InactiveI am glad that it went well! It sounds like she will be a cute and petite girl!

InactiveAnn MArie,
This latest round wasn’t so bad. he cried for 30 seconds and that was it. I don’t even think I gave him Tylenol, I can’t remember. But one of them was the chicken pox and he got about 12 little bumps five to six days later. They aren’t itching and they’re going away, but I guess that’s always possible to have a low grade reaction like that. He just didn’t mix well with them early on at all. It took a good week to recover from both the 2 month and the four month ones. It was miserable. Makes me wonder what I’ll do with another child if/when we have one. Anyway, glad yours are doing well, with such early births!! Congrats on Carter!
