InactiveJust thought I would give you all the update. We had the DT (no P) shot on Thursday, and Carter seemed to be doing well. He ate well for the rest of the day, no action on his apnea monitor, so by 8pm, we put him up in the bassinette in our room, and David and I stayed up another hour before going up to bed. When I went up to the room the apnea light was on, but I didn’t hear the monitor downstairs. Any of you who have had a monitor know it is so loud you think the whole neighborhood would hear, but we didn’t. He was breathing fine at the time, so I figured I would just watch him for a while. I picked him up to do our last feed, put him back to bed, and not 5 minutes later, he stopped breathing. The monitor was going off, and I stimulated him with my hands to get him to wake up and start breathing.
Stupid me, tries to call the on-call doctor and I am stuck in some rediculous automated system, so I think to myself, “what the he** am I doing?!” and hang up and call 911. At the ER, they all recognized us, of course, and sent us up to the Pediatric ICU for observation for the night. Carter’s heart rate was erratic and his feet were blue when we got up there.
He had a bit of a rough night, but nothing too significant. We had predosed with Benadryl and had done one more dose during the day, so I am not sure if we warded off the reaction or if it was just more mild this time.
Needless to say, we are done with immunizations. The Immunology dept. doesn’t want to do anymore, at least not for now.
Anyway, thought I would update you all…….

InactiveOh Ann Marie – I’m so sorry to hear this. You and poor Carter have had so
much to deal with and that is so hard. You are such a fantastic mother and
I’m so glad you were able to stimulate his so effectively and quickly and get
him to the ER. So what do they think happened? Allergic reaction? Shock? My
goodness. Big hugs to you and Carter (and Dylan and your DH of course).

InactiveOMG Ann Marie. I’m so sorry that you and Carter had to go through that again! Thank God you were so vigilant in watching him after the shots. I hope that he is doing better now, and is back to himself. Do they think he’s allergic to something in the shots? Are preemies more prone to potential reactions?
I was just thinking about you last night because I was watching a documentary on the life of a baby boy born preemie at 25 weeks. I had no idea what the whole experience was like until I saw it, and for some reason, I kept thinking of you.
I’m glad that they’ve decided to hold off on the vaxes. I can only imagine how stressed you are!!! I think that every phone call to 911 ages us about 10 years!!!!!
BIG, BIG HUGS!

InactiveOH ANN MARIE – i was so hoping that everything had been fine… I am so sorry that he is having these reactions because they must scare you to death. You did so well for reviving him and taking him to the hospital… I hope that they can figure out what is happening to him, but i think that you need some time to rest from these shocks first!!
I hope he is doing better now and everything is back to normal…

InactiveThanks Lori and Karen,
I was surprisingly calm as I think I kept telling myself we were only 14 hours after the shot and he went down last time completely about 22 hours after, so I kept feeling like we had time.
I’m not sure, Karen, what they call it, (allergy, versus shock), but if I had to make a guess, I would say he is reacting to the preservatives in the shots. I think that because we did all of the 2 month shots (prevnar that includes HepB, DTaP, IPV and the PCV and the Hib) all at once, the sheer volume of whatever he was reacting to was so profound. Now that we did one at a time, we had minor reactions, but all were predosed with Benadryl and Benadryl for 48 hours after each shot. Not sure if maybe there is more of the preservative in the DT that we got on Thursday than the others which is why he had a reaction or not. I need to do some further looking into what exactly is in the immunizations to see if I can come up with a pattern.
Lori, I kept feeling so non vigilent when I came up and saw the light on. I was beating myself up about it all weekend.
I have to say that overall, Carter is not a difficult baby like Dylan was. His reflux is very under control and he is gaining fine. Developmentally he is a little behind, but we are getting EI services as well as some private PT. I think because Dylan had a lot of issues, that Carter’s issues seem so much easier to deal with.

InactiveThank you, Thais,
I am feeling pretty OK with where we are, and I am confident this reaction won’t have lasting effects. We are still not sure about the last one, but this one was so much more mild.
I think that the risk of the things we are vaccinating against, in Carter’s case, it is less risky to get the disease than the vaccination. I will, however, continue to have Dylan receive his, just not Carter. This is tough for me, as I really think they are so important, but not in Carter’s case.

InactiveThank God he’s o.k. I hope and pray he never has another episode like that.

InactiveThanks Christine,
I really want to try to pinpoint the issue in case it is the gelatin or something in the preservative so I can avoid it when we start solids.

Inactiveoh Ann Marie, I am so sorry Carter had another reaction but thank goodness you did catch it a little earlier this time. I am truly inspired at how well you deal with all of this and how proactive you are. Big hugs to you and Carter!

InactiveThanks Tiffany. I think the bad part is I look at him so “medically” sometimes, that we don’t get to just enjoy him as our last baby. Hopefully now that we are going to stop immunizations going forward, we can just relax about it and enjoy him more.
Oh, and I don’t always deal so well

InactiveAnn Marie – I am so sorry that you all had to go through that
again. Carter is one lucky little guy to have such a strong and
caring mommy. Your strength amazes me too, I don’t know how you
do it. I hope and pray that you don’t ever have to go through
this again and that you find some answers. Please keep us
posted. HUGS………September 5, 2006 at 9:29 pm #13004Anonymous
InactiveI was just thinking the same thing, Ann Marie…. you truly are an amazingly strong person. Your kids are so lucky to have you on their side. I’ve often felt sad that the bulk of my time with Hailey has been trying to cope with her medical issues, and not enjoying her as my last baby. I hope that now that the shots are on hold, you can relax a bit more, and enjoy your precious little ones.

InactiveThanks Tricia and Lori,
We did IVF for both boys and then both being preemie, we really do cherish them. And lately Carter has this smile that makes your heart melt.
I have also picked out the retirement home that both of them are going to pay for because they definitely owe me after this
. I drive by it at least once a month to point it out to them
