InactiveHi! I am new to both the forums and reflux, in general. My 4 month old was just diagnosed last week. He is currently on Enfamil Gentle Ease and I have been wondering if a formula change would be a good idea…the doc didn’t mention it at all. What are your thoughts on this, and if I do switch him, is Alimentum the best one to try?
Thanks,
Johanna

That’s a tough question because all babies are different and respond differently to each formula. Is he on any meds? If so, I’d wait two weeks to see if the meds are working before trying a new formula. Otherwise you get yourself into the “is it the meds, or is it the formula?” circle and it can get very confusing. When MSPI is a possible problem many moms do start with Alimentum, and then move on to Nutramigen. Laura’s intro link contains lots of information about MSPI that may help you to determine if that may be part of his problem. (Stickied in the introduce yourself forum.)
If his problem is reflux only then the correct meds and correct dose should take care of the problem.
Sorry if that doesn’t help much.
We’re all confused half the time because these babies just can’t tell us what’s bothering them.

InactiveThank you so much for your responses. I feel like my head is spinning – there is just so much information here (which is certainly a good thing!), but I don’t know where to even start. I have no idea if MSPI is an issue or not!
As for the meds, the doc started Jacob (my son) on 15mg of Prevacid. That was 5 days ago and I have seen no real improvement yet. I am getting frustrated, although I was told that it could take a week to start working. I just feel so awful for him – he is miserable. On top of that, I would really LOVE some sleep!
Does 15mg seem like enough meds to you?Johanna

InactiveSeveral people on here have found that PPIs can take up to two weeks to work, so don’t give up on the prevacid yet.
Alimentum and Nutramigen have slight differences between them, but they are the same type of formula. Alimentum is made by Similac and Nutramigen is made by Enfamil. Kaelyn had problems with Alimentum, but did really well with Nutramigen.

Inactivealso 15 mg sounds low. if it doesnt work ask for an increase. have you seen the dosing at marci-kids.com?

InactiveYes, 15 mg seems low.

Inactivemy daughter is only seven weeks old and she is on 30mg of prevacid. so the dose that youre baby is on is probably to low. the medication is supposed to take about two weeks to kick in so give it a little while. If that doesn’t work then you should demand a higher dose. as far as the allimentum is concerned, my daughter was on that and we werent sure wether or not she even had mspi. so i took her off the allimentum myself a couple of days ago and switched her to enfamil AR, so far the only complaint is that she is constipated so i dont know if that is going to work out for us. Doctors say that if there is mspi then there are symptoms like blood in poop ect, but i wouldn’t be convinced w/o a test to prove it. one thing i do know is that allimentum smells like pringles potatoe chips when our little ones spit it up

Inactivegracegirl,
there is no test for mspi, its based on symptoms. my son had mucous in stools and was refluxing a ton.
also, enfamil aR doesnt work if they baby is on an acid reducing medication. here is why:“There is a formula that tries to address issues surrounding reflux
called Enfamil AR. It has rice starch that curdles when it hits the low
pH of the stomach making it less likely for reflux to occur. However,
if your child is on Zantac (or any acid suppressor), then the stomach pH isn’t low, so the
Enfamil AR won’t work.”here is the link to the article:
http://parenting.ivillage.com/baby/bhealth/0,,bt5s,00.htmlso basically, its pointless for you. enfamil ar is for babies with mild reflux that dont need medication.

Inactivethanks for that info nataliachick7. i dont know what to feed my grace anymore
i am so confused. she is still on the prevacid. you seem to know youre stuff so i would like to ask you a couple of questions. (all the moms please don’t strangle me) but grace does sleep well.
she still is on the prevacid.so basically i am trying to figure out if she can tolerate regular formula or needs to be on something else.
how do i know if she has mspi??? she does sneeze alot and obviosly has reflux. her poops are always different b/c i am constantly switching her formula. she always has gas like a 90 year old man(no offense towards old men!!) i am just so confused i don’t know what to do anymore

InactiveGracegirl,
I’m pretty sure moms here have said that they brought in a “poop sample” to their baby’s doctor and had it tested for blood because that is a sign of MSPI.
With any forumula change it takes about two weeks to be sure if it will work or not.
Does she seem to be in pain? Does she eat well? What symptoms does she have that concern you?
My son had a lot of gas, but it didn’t seem to bother him. He didn’t seem to have tummy aches and was passing the gas easily so it wasn’t a problem. If she’s passing her gas and not having tummy aches, that’s probably ok. It’s when they can’t pass it that they get intestinal pain that can be very bad.

please take the time to go to the Introduce Yourself Forum and read/skim the stickied post called groupie intro-
there you will find a ‘section’ about formulas as well as a link to MSPI info

Inactivehi again.
my sons Main mspi symptom was terrible gas.
try the formula for at least 2 weeks.
my son had diarhea a lot on milk and soy and was gassy. he also had mucous in his poops sometimes.
i switched to alimentum and seemed okay for about 3 weeks. he started having terrible reflux flair ups even though he was on the highest dose of zegerid. he also was really gassy.
i read about how if they have mspi then a milk or soy based formula can damage the GI tract and make reflux worse.this is the article that made me realize he needed neocate formula, read it when you get a chance, its very imformative about mspi and such:

Inactivechristine,
basically i have taken matters into my own hand which i shouldnt have done so fast.
grace was on allimentum and still having severe sandifers reflux episodes. i never knew if she had mspi the doc tested her poop for occult blood one time and it came back negative. but i am a nurse and i know that in adults you have to take a smear of the poop from both areas of the poop(sorry to be gross.)the doc only stuck his finger in, got a smear and then did the test, hence the negative result. but maybe its different for infants.
since i felt like she didn’t have mspi i switched her formula to enfamil AR which made her severly constipated and another mother advised not to use this b/c she is on prevacid and they dont work well together. just yesterday i swithed her again to regular enfamil. today she is absolutly miserable. she has been refluxing all day crying, restless, feeding constantlyand erraticly like she is starving. she is also rubbing and scratching at her face. i feel horrible for doing this to her i should have stuck with one formula
she has a gi appmt tues so i can hopefolly get down to business. oh yeah she sneezes all the timeOctober 7, 2006 at 10:36 pm #15173Anonymous
Inactivethat does sound like it could be mspi. read my post above yours…
my son refluxed horribly when he couldnt tolerate a formula.
and he never had blood in poops….and enfamil ar constipated my son and made reflux worse 🙁
