InactiveDo you mix it with the current formula 1/2 n 1/2 to get them used to it?
What can I flavor it with to make it taste better? Are the flavor packets worth it or is there something I can make at home to help?
Also, my DD doesn’t take 8 oz bottles…do you make up the 8 oz and then divide into smaller bottles?
Do you mix in the rice cereal considering she is on prevacid???
Sorry for all the questions – I’m just trying to do what I can to make things better.
The GI called today – ph probe and endo scheduled for Nov. 2-3rd. IV sedation…
but it has to be done. The soy has gone bad in just 4 days. Thanks again for all the support. I am going to get some counseling in the mean time to help me deal. I can’t thank you all enough – i really thought I was losing my mind yesterday! I feel more calm and in control today. At least the tests will give us some idea of what we are dealing with.
Thanks mamas…

InactiveValerie – wow, that is great you are getting the appointments soon. They should provide some answers! As per the IV sedation, that is what Matthew had. They did the gas mask before, so he felt nothing and no poking pain for him!! Hopefully it will be fine… the pH probe is important… do you have some mittens that you can put in her hands?? Ask the nurses about it.
YOu can make up whatever amount of Neocate you want… just divide by 2. Matthew did not do well on prepared formula… ie i could not prepare it in advance because it made him gassy… so i would just make 4 ounces bottles. He has never taken more than 4ounces anyway LOL.
I would avoid the cereal if possible – but you are the mommy and you have to find out what worked. We added it for calories for Matthew and he did fine.
Matthew would not take it mixed in – but i would just try it straight!! See what happens! We added sugar to Matthew’s for a while… other people did add splenda – the packets are not recommended until they are older
Will be away for a few weeks…. but will try to check on you after the procedures – good luck and do what you have to do to get through this time – it gets better!

InactiveValerie
What are you currently feeding her – ie before starting with the Neocate? Will she eat that? If she does, then you can slowly mix the 2… at whatever rate she will take it. Try sweetening it too – babies prefer sweet taste at that age. Did she take cereal before… that also changes the taste a bit. Some moms had to mix and it took them a few weeks to get them to eat Neocate.
Hang in there

InactiveThere’s something called STEVIA Liquid Extract. It’s a natural herbal sweetner. I used it to sweeten tea. It’s very sweet, but it’s not an artificial sweetner. The bottle says it’s hypoallegenic; contains no sugar, salt, starch, yeast, wheat, gluten, corn, soy, milk, egg, or preservatives. A few drops sweetens a whole 8 ounce glass of tea, so you don’t need to use much at all.
I have no idea if this is safe for babies, but it’s worth asking her doctor about. Maybe it would make the Neocate more palatable for her.

Inactivethe thing with sweet stuff is babies will develop a liking for the sweet taste and then they dont want anything that isnt sweet.

InactiveI don;t know about the sweetness thing – really depends on the baby i guess? Matthew was on Neocate with sugar and with a really yummy cereal for months and now all he wants is salt – hates sweets!!
There is a chart somewhere that goes through the stages of how babies’ tastes change… it is pretty good – i will try and post it under separate section…. there are supposedly windows for introducing new things

InactiveWell, she was on the soy but won’t take that either. She just screamed all morning.
So, for the next feeding I am going to try 1/2 neocate 1/2 rice milk…bad me I know but she has to eat something.
I love stevia! I’ll call our homeopath to see if she thinks Rachael can tolerate it now.
Also, I found the following post on rubber-ducky.org

Help for Babies Who Won’t Take NeocatePosted by: StaciDate: January 11, 2006 12:16AMMy little girl was put on Neocate. It has been told to me by the nutritionist at the University Medical Center where she was in the NICU for 3 months, that Neocate is one of the worst tasting formulas on the market, and getting her to take the bottle was a huge struggle! Well, it was reccomended to me that we try an organic, alcohol free Vanilla flavoring. I tried it, and it didn’t work too well, however, when I went to the website to order some more, I found that they had like 16 different organic flavorings. I ordered the Banana, just to try it. I am telling you my kid loves it! She sucks it up and it smells wonderful. I put 1 ml of the flavoring in a 10 ounce batch of Neocate (24 calorie). (About 0.1 ml an ounce, tiny bit) I want to tell you about this website so you can try it yourself if you are having trouble getting your baby to take the Neocate. (I think Neosure is the same thing but I’m not sure). I want to urge you though, to stay away from any of the Nutty flavorings because these kids can be allergic to nuts. I reccomend keeping it bland like Vanilla or Banana. They do however, also have Strawberry, Cherry, Maple. Rasberry Orange, Lemon, etc. Here’s the website:
http://WWW.FRONTIERCOOP.COM. It’s under the Baking Spices and flavorings section and it’s really inexpensive, like 4 or 5 dollars a bottle.
So I ordered some of those flavorings hoping it would help.
I have been adding rice cereal so maybe I need beechnut instead of the healthy times organic?
Thanks again for all the ideas. I’m very encouraged that the tests are so soon but need to get her to eat something until then…. and as for mixing it…since she is reacting so badly I just don’t know what else to mix it with other than rice milk.
Here’s hoping we all have a good weekend. I hope you ladies get to have some fun this weekend!

Inactivewell organic should be milk and soy free too i think. i was just thiking to stay away from gerber brands.

InactiveWe’ve been adding bananas (baby food) to Bryce’s breast milk to thicken. (our OT suggested it) And I think it has really helped with the taste because we have to add so many things to his bottle (microlipids, goat’s milk, etc.) So that might be something to try. Just like 1/2 tsp. per oz. is all you need. It doesn’t seem to affect his bm in any way with that much.

Inactiveohhh, the banana idea is a good one!
She has taken 6 ounces total in 14 hours…. FOURTEEN HOURS!
Anyway, I’m going to do whatever it takes to keep her going. The positive side to today is that I am more confident than ever that I know we are doing what is right by getting the tests done and to keep working with the GI. My ped can kiss my butt for all I care. The video I took today would convince anyone that something is wrong.
I can’t thank you enough for all the great ideas. I thought the Gerber organic was ok but maybe it isn’t? I’ll have to check on that…
hugs to all you mama’s and wishes for an easy, happy weekend with lots of sleep and easy feeds!!!

Inactivelol i didnt even realize gerber had organic. just check the ingredients!
October 20, 2006 at 4:05 pm #16239Anonymous
InactiveI think the Gerber Organic still has soy in it. Earth’s Best Organic does not contain any soy like Beechnut and I believe Healthy times doesn’t contain soy as well so it would be the same as using Beechnut.

Keymasterthere has been discussion of potato milk- and so I think maybe you can use some sort of potato flour for thickening? worth looking into?
(I think Kattmc3 wrote about this?)
