InactiveMe again… We are starting Ben on Zegerid tomorrow
and I just had a few questions for those of you who use it or have in the past.1. Should I expect some hellish days as Ben’s Prevacid wears off and before the Zegerid kicks in? Please say no!

2. The information the pharmacy prints out about the drug is pretty daunting. I know that MARCI-KIDS says it’s safe, but still…it says it causes dizziness? I guess this would be difficult to tell in an infant, but if they are dizzy, wouldn’t they throw up more???
3. What about giving Mylanta? I have the Mylanta Supreme cherry flavor, but it has calcium in it, and if I’m not mistaken, the information about Zegerid talks about being careful to not overdue one’s calcium intake while on the drug. How often can I give Mylanta and when? Will it interact with Zegerid?
4. Also, the info. from the pharmacy says to take Zegerid 1 hour before eating, but I’ve read here and on MARCI that you can take Zegerid whenever.. regardless of time or when one has eaten. So which is it???
Thanks for all your help! I really hope that this works for him!

InactiveI can’t answer all of your questions since my son was not on Zegerid but I can answer some based on what I’ve read here.
You do not have to give it on an empty stomach. The reason it says that in the instructions is that the makers of Zegerid have not gotten permission yet to make that claim (that it can be given on an empty stomach) but the man who created it (Dr. Phillips) at marci-kids says it can be, and it was created partly for that purpose.
Dr. Phillips actually recommends giving Zegerid with Mylanata Cherry Supreme to prevent vomitting because some babies throw up their dose due to the high sodium content…..so I assume it must be safe to give Mylanta Cherry Supreme with Zegerid. If he can take it without the Mylanta and keep it down, then you probably won’t need Mylanta anymore anyway because the Zegerid will likely stop his reflux symptoms.

As for having hellish days while the Zegerid takes effect and Prevacid wears off….I doubt that will happen. It takes a few days for all of the Prevacid to clear the body anyway, and most people who’ve used Zegerid here have said it works pretty quickly.
Those pharmacy print outs can be scary….I hate to read them because then I worry about everything little thing that can go wrong. I don’t know how frequently dizziness has been reported as a side effect, but again from reading posts here for almost a year now, it seems most babies tolerate Zegerid very well. Hopefully (and most likely) Ben will too.
Good luck!! Please keep us posted on Ben’s progress.

InactiveMix it with Mylanta, huh? Any idea how to go about doing that?

InactiveWhat is the dosage and did you get the 40 mg. packets or the 20 mg. packets? If you give less than 14 mg. per dose you will need to add mylanta if you get the 40 mg. packet. After I find out what you got I can help you better.

Inactive2.5 ml per dose if giving less than 14 mg with the 40 mg packs-there isnt enough buffer in them.
u can also add mylanta with the 20 mg packs b/c they are very salty.

InactiveHis dose is 5ml 3 times a day… and we are using the 20 mg packet.. so that’s 10 mg at a time. Should I still use the Mylanta?? I gave it to him this morning and he took it fine, but I fed him right after and after just a minute of eating he needed to burp and he spit up.. I have no doubt that some of the meds came up too.. it wasn’t much spit up.. just your usual burp stuff, but I wondered if it would be better to give the Zegerid after he eats?? I’m just used to doing it before like I did with the Prevacid.

InactiveHere’s the thread I was referring to about using Mylanta with Zegerid…it refers to the 40 mg packets so it may not help you but I thought I’d post if for your information since it does explain some things about Zegerid and Mylanta.

InactiveWow, you were able to get him on a really decent dose for being so young – that is great. Abby started out at 3.5ml (5mg) 3 times per day when she was only 2 months old.
I bet you will see results within only a couple of days as he was already on a PPI. Abby was very noticibly better after a couple days and was totally better within a week or so.
As far as side effects, I wouldn’t worry too much about the sheets they give you. I never noticed any side effects with Abby (other than looser poopie). That did improve with time.
About the Mylanta, with the 20mg packets, it isn’t necessary. We have never used it with the Zegerid. Abby was 2 months old also when she started the Zegerid so rather than just shooting it in her mouth, we mixed it with 1 ounce of formula and she has never had a problem taking it. That way, they don’t develop the negative relationship with the syringe and putting it in an ounce or so of formula takes a little of the edge off the flavor (although Abby loves the taste – maybe she is weird
)I hope I helped answer questions – let me know if you have any others. Good luck with the Zegerid!!

InactiveHe must have never tasted it either. Its like taking a spoonful of sugar with a peachy mint flavor. Its quite nasty to be honest. I can’t believe the kids take it the way they do.

InactiveCaraCream tastes salty, I often wish it tasted sweeteer. Interesting that they were able to get rid of the salty taste for the zegerid (and also good). The saltiness of immediate release PPIs has always made Hailey gag.

KeymasterI liked caracream with prevacid- tasted like a white chocolate/yogurt covered pretzel

InactiveLaura, I LOVE the smell, and used to really like the taste too, but I only put a bit on my finger. When Hailey started refusing it and I was trying to figure out why, I took a teaspoon full, and I didn’t really like the saltiness. Either way, it’s a great product and most importantly IT WORKS!!!
