InactiveMy sitter informed me that she thinks Sarah is trying to wean herself from her mid-afternoon bottle. She just hasn’t been taking the full 6 oz for about a week now. I didn’t know what to “substitute” in for that bottle so the sitter has been giving her a sippy cup and some finger foods. Sarah is not very proficient with a sippy cup yet and will more chew on it than suck. She’ll maybe get 2-3 ounces of water. Here is a run down of what Sarah eats during the day…
6:30 am – 6oz bottle
7:30-8:30 am – Cereal/oatmeal, jar of fruit
11:00am- 12:00 – 6 oz bottle
12:00-1:00am – 1 or 2 jars of baby food, cheerios/puffs
3:00-3:30 – USED to be a 6 oz bottle/NOW sippy, cheerios/puffs
5:00 – 1 jar baby food, cheerios/puffs
6:30 – 8 oz bottleMy problem is this…Sarah is not wanting to take her entire nighttime bottle now. I am panicking because she ALREADY lost 6oz of formula by losing a bottle. I don’t know if she’s getting too much FOOD between 3:00-bedtime or what?? I want her to have enough fluids.
What did you substitute in when your kiddos started dropping bottles? Oh, and yes I now realize we need some variety in her diet…enough puffs!!! I’m out of ideas though!
Sarah is also teething (I think anyway) so I know that has contributed to her bottle refusal the past two nights…I just want to make sure she’s getting enough fluid and nutrition.
Any ideas???? Does this even make any sense??

InactiveMaybe try switching the 3 o’clock bottle to right before her dinner at 5 and stick with the sippy and a snack at 3? That way it would be more of an after nap snacktime instead of a meal. Then, she could get some fluids with her meal instead???? And, I realize that might cut down on her intake at night too, but I think that’s fairly common as well. As they get older, babies don’t need to eat as much to last them through the night. Eventually, that bottle will be more out of habit than necessity.
I would stick with the sippy cup though. She will get the hang of it.
As far as snack ideas…. teething biscuits, diced fruit (peaches or pears are good), maybe some crumbled egg yolk, plain cooked pasta (like elbow noodles or small shells – Claire LOVED and still does macaroni and cheese – though Sarah might still be too young for the milk in that yet).

InactiveGreat topic Amy, I have been thinking about this as well (both the dropping of the bottle and the food variety).
Alana seems to eat so many solids now I was wondering what to do about the bottle (she is a little young to drop one yet). Sometimes she only takes about 3 oz each from her 11 and 3 bottle (no more than 6 oz from the other two).
Anyway I looked up the stuff I got from the Maternal Child and Health Nurse and it says that from 9-12 months you can have solids before formula/breast milk. I think this is because it may become a little less important because the babies food variety gets wider and they are getting more nutrients etc. I guess this means that they probably start taking less milk overall. So I probably wouldn’t be overly concerned about that bottle and instead focus on her getting the hang of the sippy cup and water for the hydration. Or if she wants just up the food a bit…foods that have a high water content like fruut and also the sippy cup.
This is what Alana did today
7.00am 6 oz bottle
7.45am cereal with banana and pear (we have just started the cereal the last two days- I am trying to be brave and redo the grain thing

10.30 mashed fruit
11.15 5 oz bottle
1ish lunch- veges followed by fruit
3ish 5 oz bottle
then afternoon tea- some mashed fruit
6.00 tea- tonight was some delightful mashed sweet potato with chicken
7.00 4 oz bottle (she was stuffed
)Normally I don’t do morning and afo tea- but they do at daycare. Usually she will only do between 3-4 oz bottles at daycare but she has a little cold and I think she is trying to sooth a dry throat (i have it too, not painful just get a bit of a tickle so I can understand her wanting a drink)
We have done a little bit of toast with avacado (thanks Lauren) the last couple of nights after tea and Alana loved it (not sure how much she swallowed!!!).
In posting this, I can now see why she is the chubbiest cherub in town

Any ideas about variety are very much appreciated here to…but then when I look at my diet I don’t do much variety either!!!
Have either of you done tomato? I haven’t tried yet, but it would seem to be an easy one to maybe go with some pasta- I have been told there is a little italian pasta- bit like risoni but in little balls that a lot of italian mums feed their bubs. You then can do tomato based sauces, vege based sauces…they don’t stock it in our supermarkets, you have to go to a specialty store, but I think I might chase it down- most dry pastas don’t have milk but it would probaly be worth double checking.
I think I am ramblinnnnnnnng

InactiveTherese – I love your Aussie word “tea”…we don’t use that here.
I am so glad I’m not alone in this. I DO realize that as babies get older they do not need as much fluid…but does anyone have an age/ounce guideline? I know most of those are a joke b/c a lot of babies take way more/less than the average…but it would help me feel better. How MUCH less fluid intake per day is still OK? Lauren I think it was you that said your doc. said something about having at LEAST 15oz a day? Was that you? How old was Shane when he said that?
Also, if she is dropping a bottle, do I start offering MORE oz in the bottles she DOES take?
Oh it’s all soooooooooo confusing.

InactiveAmy:
Abby really likes Kix cereal (the little balls). Easy to pick up and dissolves pretty fast. I have also made toast and cut it in really small pieces. It seems like that with Kayla, I never ran out of ideas but for some reason, I just feel in a fog when it comes to food ideas.
As far as the bottle goes, it is just so hard to know. Abby has never taken more than 24 ounces in a day and lately has been averaging about 20. Can’t wait to get her off the bottle but she has a little attitude when it comes to her sippy cup. I think daycare is going to need to encourage her a little more.Robin

InactiveAt nine months Liza and Ellie were both on only three bottles a day and neither of them ever took more than six ounces at a time, so they were probably getting 15-18 ounces a day, plus whatever I used to mix their oatmeal in the morning.
Myles gave up the bottle at 7 months so I can’t really compare him but I can tell you that he was getting about 17 -18 ounces a day for many months ( 8 ounces in his oatmeal, 4 ounces spoon fed in the afternoon, and 5-6 ounces at bedtime).
Definitley keep giving her a cup and try different types. My kids all did better with a straw cup.
She’s probably old enough for toast, waffles, pancakes, whole grain crackers (Kashi makes them – Myles’ favorite food!), soft fruits or veggies diced, melons.

Inactivewhen alana had gastro they said about 500ml to stay hrdrated- i think thats about 15 -16 oz. But that was when she was on formula only…so probably doesn’t include the water you get in all th fruit and veg. Those sippy cups are hard work!!!1

Inactivemy doctor said i think 18 ounces a day.. but i dont think 16 would really make a difference!
and i would love to know what kind of straw cup .. he wont do a sippy yet either.. wants nothing to do with it! or juice or water! and is it dangerous with the straw at all if they fall or no?

InactiveThank you for giving me some minimal guidelines on ounce intake per day. That makes me feel better.
I have figured out it IS teeth bothering her and making her not want her night bottle. (one popped through today
but I think there’s another one brewing!) She refused her bottle initially but after giving her orajel, she gobbled it up. Darn teeth! I also appreciate all of the other food ideas. I feel like we’re in a rut with her diet and I’d like to offer more table foods.

InactiveI have been doing some research- its my day of and Alana is asleep so… heres some ideas (ignore of course the milky cheesy ones for the MSPI bubs!)
- Steamed veggies (sweet potato sticks, peas, carrot sticks, green beans, zucchini )
- Grated soft cheese
- Tofu chunks (Yuck but good protein)
- Soft cooked legumes- if you are ready for these
- Soft ripe fresh fruit, like banana, peach, papaya, (dice as small as you want)
- Soft cooked fruit like apple chunks, pear slices, rockmelon, mango, peach, pear, watermelon, kiwi fruit,
- Hard cooked egg yolk- if you want to try it
- Ripe avocado
- Toast sticks
- Mini-muffins
- Cooked pasta shapes
- Bone-free flakes of cooked fish
- Scrambled egg (yolk only)
- Slices of cooked meat and chicken
- mince or chicken patties crumbled (I always use chicken mince rather than beef mince in my recipes)
Heres a couple of recipes I have “hijacked” from the internet (who knows how they will work with the hypoallergnic formula’s but its worth a go!). I’m going to give them a go..I’ll let you know.
Baby Pancakes – What to Do with Leftover Baby Cereal
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup baby barley cereal (or other baby cereal)
1 cup formula (or another liquid such as milk)
1/2 cup mashed banana (or fruit of your choice)
1 tbsp melted margarine or butter (unsalted type)
3 egg yolks
1/2 cup baby oatmeal
apple juice (about 1/2 cup) Use water if you prefer
Add cinnamon, nutmeg, dash of vanilla or other flavourings if you wish (I would probably avoid this due to allergen factor but just me!Mix all ingredients together and add enough juice to make pancake consistency. Cook on cook top in frying pan as with “regular” pancakes!
Tofu Finger Cubes
1 Package Firm Tofu (we love Nasoya)
Crushed/Powdered Cereal, Crackers, Granola or Wheat GermSlice tofu into small cubes that are manageable for your baby.
Toss tofu in a Ziploc bag with crushed Cheerios, crushed graham crackers or crushed granola
Close bag and toss to thoroughly coat tofu cubes – serve as finger food for snack or as protein source at a mealHeres a couple of recipes from my Pepti-Junior Book
Rice Pudding
Combine 1/4 c rice cereal with 1tsp of milk free margarine and 1/2c hot water in a saucepan. Cook on medium heat until the rice cereal is soft. At 120ml of petpti-junior/formula prior to feeding. And 2 tsp of golden syrup if you want!!!
Pepti-Junior Custard
Place 2-3 tsp of ground rice, maize cornflour or baby rice cereal flakes in a small saucepan. Gradually add 150ml of Pepti Junior to form a smooth paste. Add 1/2 tsp of goleden syrup. Heat over a medium heat stirring constantly to prevent lumps. In about 1-2 mins the custard will thicken.
Fruit “Ice Cream”
Place 2 tsp of rice flour in a bowle and add a small amount of formula to form a paste. Gradually dd 350ml of formula. Heat gently for 3-4 mins to allow the mixture to thicken. Stir to prevent lumps. Cool then add 1/3 cup pureed fruit and 2 tsp golden syrup (optional). Pour into a cake tine and place in freezer until ice starts forming around the edges (about 1 hr) Don’t allow to freeze. Place in a cold mixing bowl and beat until mixture is light and fluff (approx 3 min). Return to freezer until set. To serve “flake” the icecream with side of fork (like a sorbet)!
Pheww. Better go get ready for mother’s group. I am soooo addiceted to this forum. Hugs to all.

InactiveAbout the straw cup….
I found one at Walmart that I like and Myles loves. It’s made by Rubbermaid. It’s shaped like a juice box and has a little flip top straw. It’s not made for babies, but works very well because it’s just the right size and the straw is short and flat so it won’t poke them or hurt them in any way.
