InactiveI have a table food suggestion! If you shop for convenience like I do…Wal Mart (and some other name brands) are now making individual servings of vegetables in little microwaveable bowls. It’s a great portion size b/c I’m not then wasting a whole can when I know Sarah will just eat a few. We have tried green beans and then carrots tonight. Although they were difficult for her to grasp (b/c they’ve been sitting in water so they’re slippery)…she loved them! The ingredients for the carrots said “carrots, water, salt” It is a pretty high salt content (sodium 200mg) but she’s only eating 10 or 15 pieces so I figure that’s only a small fraction of the total salt content in the container. Just thought I’d share if you’re short on time for cooking…like me!

Inactiveomg that is a lot of salt….but i guess once in a while when you cant cook its okay…
is this in the baby food section?February 22, 2007 at 7:44 pm #25569Anonymous
InactiveIt’s in the canned veggie aisle. YES, I didn’t mean for this to be an everyday all the time snack…just a great quickie!

InactiveI’ll keep a look out in good old oz for those micro beans etc (washing them prior to nuking might get rid of more of the salt that is clinging to the outside…we don’t have walmart…i think recently they were trying to muscle in and buy out one of our chains but it didn’t happen.
Well I spoke with daycare today and gave the OK for them to do finger food. Well I turned up this afo and they had given her some…bananas, sultanas and CRUSKITS with vegemite. Cruskits are a cracker biscuit…they have MILK SOLIDS in them. Der!!! What bit of nothing with milk did you not get!!!!!! Never mind that vegemite (I hope you know what that is….disgusting black yeasty stuff that we can’t get enough of!) is pretty much pure salt! Well, I am sure she will survive because didn’t get much…and she took a week on normal formula to have a reaction so I am sure she is simply intolerant…but its kind of the principle…clearly they didn’t get the no milk message. Well thats my vent…she is sleeping like an angel so no harm no foul

InactiveWe’ve discovered that a lot of people just don’t understand that no milk means nothing cooked with milk as well.

InactiveWell they had pancake day today…gentle reminder re the milk in cooking was passed on..with some success. Poor little tike..she had to watch everyone else eat pancakes!

InactiveOh that’s so sad! I tell people Dagney’s allergic to milk (easier than saying “intollerant”) and they say “oh lactose intolerant?” NO!
It’s a littler early for me to really participate in this thread, but it’s really educational for me! Tomorrow Dagney’s starting her first spoon food, so we’ll be where you all are in no time!
Therese, I’m from an Italian-American family and my mom would always make us pastina when we were little–it’s little tiny ball-shaped pasta (it’s called acini di pepe), mixed with butter and milk, so simple but SO yummy! That’s a GREAT non-MSPI kid food! I can’t wait for the day that I can make it for Dag, although I’d be substituting Neocate for the milk and not sure what–or nothing–for the butter, so I’m not sure how it will taste!!

InactiveThanks Denise…we have started with the little balls of pasta. I have been mixing it with some pumkin and corn puree. Almost like going to an Italian restaurant
. Very yummy I thought. Alana didn’t seem to mind it to much either (another option other than milk

InactiveDenise,
My mom used to make ancini de pepe for us. She’d make meatball soup with it. We all loved it. When I moved to the midwest I was very disappointed that you can’t find ancini de pepe in stores. So, I make my meatball soup with rice or little shells….not nearly as good.

InactiveMy mom makes a fruit salad out of acini de pepe called “frog-eye salad”. Sounds weird, but it’s really good.
I wonder why they don’t have it in your stores Christine. March 3, 2007 at 1:55 pm #26489Anonymous
InactiveI don’t know. We have such a small selection of everything. Like bread…we get Sarah Lee and Country Hearth….that’s basicaly it. I nearly did a cartwheel in the bread aisle at Walmart this morning becasue they had something new…New England Organic whole wheat bread.
There’s a lot of things we don’t get here. Beechnut baby foods. Hostess products (not that we need those!). No Drakes, either. I miss Devil Dogs! (I don’t need those either, though
). The pasta section is our stores is tiny. Elbows, ziti, lasagna, spaghetti, fettuccini, shells, wagon wheels, maybe a few others, but nothing like the variety I used to see in NY. It just blows my mind when I go to a bigger city and go shopping. I see things I haven’t seen in years. I really miss that variety and availability of goods, but I’ll take small town life over big shopping anyday.
Frog eye salad, hugh? What’s in it? I’m not crazy about cold pasta salads, but my dh loves them. He’d do a cartwheel if I made him a cold pasta salad!! I could use shells.

InactiveOh, okay.
For some reason I took it to mean that they didn’t sell acini de pepe anywhere in the midwest.
I definitely know how it is to live in a small town – I lived in one for most of my childhood. My parents used to travel to the city like every few months to stock up on stuff.
They have a Wal-mart now though, so they’re happy.
Anyway, here’s the frog-eye salad. It’s not my mom’s recipe, but similar. I’m not sure you could substitute another pasta – the acini are so teeny & subtle in it. Couldn’t hurt to try though!
Frog-Eye Salad1 1/3 c acini de pepe (uncooked)
1 (20 oz) can pineapple tidbits, drained (reserve 1/4 c juice)
1 3/4 c milk
1/4 c sugar
1 (3 oz) pkg. instant vanilla pudding
1 (8 oz) can crushed pineapple, drained
2 (12 oz) cans mandrin oranges, drainedCook pasta in boiling water for 11 minutes. Drain well, rinsing with cold water to cool pasta. In large bowl, beat reserved pineapple juice, milk, sugar and pudding mix for 2 minutes. Gently stir in pasta and remaining ingredients. Cover and chill at least 5 hours.
(I think some ppl add mini marshmallows & coconut flakes)

InactiveThanks Heather! Dh will love that. Maybe I’ll make it for Easter for him (not that he deserves it).

InactiveThe things we do sometimes for those non-deserving dh
. Maybe they should wise up and realise how much more we would do if they actually became deserving

InactiveI agree, Therese!
