InactiveThought I’d update…Sarah is still taking 4 bottles but one of her bottles has dropped from 6oz to 4oz. I am starting to freak out about losing ALL bottles completely in two SHORT months.
Question…and probably a stupid one…I hold Sarah for all of her bottles. When she uses a sippy cup she is usually in her high chair and she’ll play with it here and there. When you transitioned your kids to sippy cups, did you hold them or just let them have it at the highchair or while playing etc? I’m just concerned that she won’t drink as much as she needs if she’s not “contained” on my lap like she was with her bottles??? And since it looks like we won’t be starting milk anytime soon, I assume everyone puts formula in the sippy cups? That’s the other thing…time limit…Formula goes bad after an hour and if she plays with it like she does her water/juice…she’ll waste a lot of formula. Am I being neurotic??

Also, Sarah had her first waffle today!
She seemed to really like it (kept eating it anyway…) Honestly (aside from fruits/veggies) it was the first “real people” food I’ve given her. Hope she does OK with it! Had to add a pic. of her new sunglasses. She thinks she’s hot stuff!

Inactiveaww what a cutie.!!…also i dont know of anyone on here that discontinued the bottle at 12 months….except for Christine and thats because Myles gave up the bottle at 7 months.
also just curious about the milk…you said youre not going to start it anytime soon? since she can already tolerate alimentum doesnt your doc want you to try milk at 12 months?
we are going to try goodstart at 12 months.

InactiveNatalia – We did a Good Start trial last month and it wasn’t successful. Since switching her back to Alimentum…she’s been great again! I’m scared to try again anytime soon. I noticed you mentioned in another thread that if a child drinks Alimentum then they aren’t really MSPI (or at least not severely). What category would Sarah fall in? She has done yogurt OK, but can’t tolerate regular milk based formula? She seems to have done OK also on every new food we’ve tried so far…I just wondered if she is “MSPI” or not? What do you think?
March 4, 2007 at 9:28 pm #26571Anonymous
Inactiveyou know i really dont know…there are all sorts of severities of MSPI…i have even seen babies on here that can tolerate cheese, yogurt, but not milk…so it really can be confusing.

the cows milk protein is extremely hard for the human body to digest…so i really am not surprised at all of it. many people/doctors say us humans arent even meant to drink cows milk.

Inactivei’ll tell you what i think 😉
… i dont think she really is, if she does yogurt o.k. … that is what throws me off. maybe she is intolerant to it in large amounts? not sure.. i would like to see what everyone else thinks too. i think shane might have a little intolerance to dairy.. but i also think a lot of people do have a tiny bit.. like a lot of people pass gas when they have dairy, but it doesnt hurt them. i duno, i am just rambling.. but would like to see what people think too! and shane has dropped down to 3 bottles as well! and one in the middle of the night ;( soo i guess thats really 4. and what i really wanted to post was that sarah is soooo cute! i dont know how you take it!March 5, 2007 at 3:51 am #26590Anonymous
InactiveLove the shades amy…alana has a pink pair of baby bands and the only place they go is in her mouth!

Here’s my little darling doing the “frog”.
This is my take on things…not sure if it is right or not. A reaction to milk protein is an immune based reaction. The immune system recognised the protein as an “invader” and reacts to it. So formulas try and change the look of the protein so the immune system doesn’t react to it.
My understanding is that the difference in the formula…elemental…semi-elemental, hydrolysates is the degree that the protein is broken down. The immune reaction is actually to the protein itself (if any of you can recall science class…the protein is made up of peptides and peptides made up of amino acid). So the immune system may react to a protein but not to a peptide or amino acid as they are different.
Partially Hydrolysed formula (like goodstart) contain cow’s milk in which the milk proteins are broken down to long chains peptides. Long chain peptides are closer to the “protein” and therefore more likely reacted to.
Extensively hydrolysed formulas are predominantly made up of short chain peptides derived from cows milk. As they are broken down further they look less like the protein and therefore there is less chance of reaction. I think these are interchangeable with semi-elemental formualas (eg Peti Junior is listed as both an extensively hydrolysed formual and a “complee semi-elemental formula based on short chain peptides).
Elemental formulas have the protein broken down to amino acids. They look so different to proteins that the immune system hypothetically doesn’t react to them.
So you can have a reaction to milk proteins without needing to be on an elemental formula. It depends on the severity of the reaction…or how much the immune system reacts. This might explain why some people do OK on yoghurt (the milk proteins are altered in the process) but not milk (eg I can do yoghurt and cheeds…but no milk…bowels just don’t handle it…IYNWIM).
I don’t know why people “grow out of it”…maybe the immune system strengthens…or the gut strenghtens (the immune system is linked directly to the gut) and the reaction lessons with this maturity.
Anyhow…just my thoughts on the situation. I have been known to be wrong on many occasions…but this is how i make sense of it.

InactiveTherese – Lots of info! I tried to read slowly so I could make sense of it all (I’m not quite awake yet!)
I guess I will consider it a success if Sarah can tolerate milk based products in small amounts and not whole milk. We can live without milk…people do it everyday! I think Sarah has a sensitive tummy like her dad and now that table foods are being introduced I’ll just have to take it slow and see if she has reactions. Both my mom and MIL have a hard time “believing” that Sarah could have intolerance issues. I think they’re in denial. My MIL was talking about Sarah’s first birthday coming up and watching her dive into a cake. I said “Well, I’m not sure yet what I’m going to do about that b/c I’m not sure if she would be able to handle it with her issues”. She looked at me like I was a ghastly person for not giving Sarah cake. Ugh!!! What do you do???
Alana is absolutely gorgeous! I love her little hands…I think baby hands and feet are the cutest!!!!

InactiveBoth your little girls are SO CUTE I can’t stand it! Amy, Dagney has the same shades in pink, and she loves them too, I thought she’d try to get them off, but we went for a walk the other day, she left hem on the whole time & was flirting with everyone who went by!
I think my family is just finally “getting” that Dagney is intollerant, which I’m hoping she will outgrow. My MIL will be watching her when I go back to work in a couple of weeks (NO Don’t make me go!!), so I just kept repeating things like how she can’t have any dairy and how special the formula is, she probably thought I was obsessed, but I got my point across!
The GI did, however, say at 1 year we could trial a food with a small amount of dairy in it, which could be cake if you wanted to keep your MIL somewhat quiet!
I do have a question…when do babies go from 5 to 4 bottles? For the last few weeks Dagney’s been only drinking about 2-3 ounces of her 2nd bottle of the day, she just doesn’t seem very interested in it anymore.
Thanks and good luck!

InactiveAmy,
As for bottles…Myles gave up the bottle at 7 months (except his bedtime bottle), but for both of my girls I held them and fed them two bottles per day (one before their afternoon nap, and one before bedtime) until they were at least 18 months old. Liza didn’t give up the two bottles until she was over two. I worried about the drastic fluid decrease by taking away the bottle too soon, so I kept them on it until I felt they were drinking enough from a cup. I know it’s not what most docs recommend, but I think it’s rediculous to just stop the bottle at a year when most babies at that age are not taking much from a cup yet. Edited to say…I don’t mean that you’re being rediculous…I think it’s rediculous that doctors push getting babies off of bottles at a year.
Oh, Sarah looks adorable in her shades! She looks so sweet. And her hair looks so red in that picture.
Therese,
Thanks for the very helpful description of the different forumals! It’s very helpful.

Alana is adorable!

InactiveChristine – I didn’t realize how red it looked until you said something. Funny enough, my in laws were in town this weekend and were complaining b/c her hair is NOT red…it’s more blond/brown??? There must be a hue of red though since it still photographs so red. Time will tell!

Glad to know we don’t “have” to give up the bottle at a year. It’s encouraging…and less stressful for me to think about!

InactiveYeah, I really like to keep them on a bottle until they are drinking a lot from a cup. Many times when they’ve been sick and wouldn’t eat or drink anything all day, the bottle before naps and bedtime was the only fluid they were getting….so it’s really good for that too.

InactiveWow Theresa! You are smart!!! I wish I could even understand half of what you wrote.
Amy, I know of a lot of mom’s who have said that thier LO can tolerate dairy in small doses, or maybe yogurt/cheese, but not pure milk. But really I wouldn’t worry about milk, so many babies don’t drink it and they are just fine. Also, when I stopped BF Brianna I was soooo worried she wasn’t getting enough fluid. The hard part was I didn’t have a clue how much she was drinking in the first place. I remember just offereing her the sippy cup every five seconds. But then I started to realize that Brianan would drink when she was thirsty, and I stopped stressing over it. Just make sure she still is wetting her diapers and she will be fine. But on an encouraging note, at 9.5 months Brianna did not do well with even yogurt…at 11 months she was fine with yogurt/cheese and now at 14 months she almost seems to do better when she drinks more milk than wehn she drinks less.
