InactiveDo any of you have migraines? Is this something that you can develop later on in life (later on, being where I’m at now, age 33!), or is it something that you get sooner than that?
Yesterday I had a mild sinus headache in the morning, since I’m pretty sure I have a sinus infection but won’t take antibiotics for it!!!
Anyhow, it progressed throughout the day because I didn’t have any meds on hand, and by the end of the day it was so bad that I couldn’t pick my head up. The light was bothering me, and my vision was blurred, I was dizzy, and had chills, and felt so nauseous that I acutally vomitted. I had to leave work early to come home, but it was so incapacitating, that I had to lie upstairs in the dark. When I woke up in the morning it was gone.
I’ve been somewhat stressed out lately, but wasn’t stressed out at work, so don’t think that was it.
Can it be a migraine? At first I thought that I must have a stomach virus the nausea was so bad, but when it didn’t get better after vomitting, I started to wonder.

InactiveI think it could have been a migraine. Mine just started in the last couple of years. As a matter of fact right around 33. It sounds like one to me because of the vomitting. Everytime I get one I end up vomitting and then I feel a little better. It may be something to talk to your doctor about. There are some good medications out for migraines.

InactiveMy DH (OK BH
– see if you can get that one) started getting them around 30. A couple of times he had difficulty talking and tingling in a hand…then vomitted and then migraine. (He chose to tell me all this after it had happened a couple of times). He had a CT etc because it sounded pretty ominous but all was OK. There is a family history. He hasn’t had one in a couple of years. I think stress had a lot to do with it at the time- he was very unwell (turns out he also had ulcerative colitis) and no one could find the reason.March 11, 2007 at 9:36 am #27207Anonymous
InactiveI actually had them mainly as a child and teenager – now i only get them when i get stressed. Def sounds like one. My dad actually started having htem at around 30 or so and they have continued but a lot of people just get them a couple of times and they are stress induced. They are tension migraines (don’t really knnow the name in english but that would be the translation)…

InactiveI use to get them a lot when I was in my 20’s, lack of sleep and stress. Sometimes certain smells, very strong perfume or cologne can trigger a horrible migraine for me. I can typically feel one coming on right away, by a pain behind my eyes and temples. If I don’t take something right away I can’t function for the rest of the day, I can’t even move or I will throw up. I need a very dark and quiet place to rest for almost the entire day. But after having Alexis I don’t seem to get them anymore. I still get horrible headaches but haven’t had a migraine since. What worked for me was actually over the counter Excerdin Migraine and a Coke. Both of which has caffeine and that constricts the blood vessels which are dialated during headaches. So if you don’t have any medications on hand see if you have something caffeinated since it truly does help. Alexis’s mom2007-3-11 18:53:45

InactiveI started getting migraines while I was pregnant and they just seem to be getting worse lately. I take 2 excedrin and 4 advil-sometimes that will work but usually it will just take the edge off of it. I hope that you stop having the migraines soon

Inactivei get occular migraines—-my vision goes weird and i get a blind spot, but i don’t get a headache. i get a bright spot, like you get when you look at a light, and then it gets bigger and turns into a shining, vibrating ziz-zag line. it makes an arc in my vision and then slowy moves out of my field of vision and then goes away. the blind spot isn’t a dark spot, it is just like there is nothing there. not sure if that makes sence to you.

InactiveOh, I hope it’s not migraines, but all signs are pointing to migraines. I had really severe headaches during my pregnancy that were pretty incapacitating, but the doc said b/c I didn’t omit, that it wasn’t a migraine.

InactiveIt does sound like a migraine to me. I often get bad sinus headaches and
sometimes migraines too. They actually can be hard to distinguish – except
you will usually have congestion with sinuses and not naseau. But for your
doctor to say that because you didn’t vomit it wasn’t a migraine is ridiculous,
IMO – just like saying if a baby doesn’t spit up a lot they don’t have reflux/
GERD. I almost never vomit during a migraine (in fact I rarely vomit period).
Either does my mother but she can have blinding pain and be totally
incapacitated from migraines (she gets them worse than I). I am a fan of 3
advil migraine and a huge cup of iced coffee when it happens.

InactiveCan you take 3 advils? The bottle says max 2 at a time.

InactiveMy migraines tend to come in batches. I’ll have a few months when I get a couple a week and then I’ll go a few months without any at all. They were diagnosed by a neurologist when I was a teenager, and I’ve never vomitted with them, so I’m not sure what your doctor is talking about.
The prescription dose of ibuprofen that I was given after my C section was 800 mg three times a day. So, I’m guessing that would be safe for migraine treatment as well.
If they become frequent and problematic there are preventative meds that you can take. Until I went off of it to get pregnant, I was on inderal to help prevent migraines. I haven’t had any major problems since having the girls, so we’ve decided to see if I can do without it now.

InactiveLike Kim said, 4 advil (800 mg) is actually the same as prescription strength
ibuprofen. But I wouldn’t do it every 4-6 hours then. When I really need I
take 3 and then wait 6-8 hours. And I find the Advil Migraine actually helps
more (for a migraine) than regular advil. I’ve been told it’s delivered
differently? Who knows but that and some caffeine and laying in a dark room
usually helps.

InactiveFunny about medications – the ibuprofen pills in spain come in 600mg, and so when you take 2 you are really taking 1,200mg and that is what a ton of doctors recommend… same with tylenol etc. It is amazing how things can be so different!
Well, if the migraines start to happen, go to the doctor… i used to have some shots when i was a teenager; now i can just take something called Fiorinal with codeine and if i have no meds around i can take a couple of excedrin migraine and go and sleep it off!

InactiveYep! My ear nose and throat told me that is what he always took when he got a migraine so he said it was safe for me to do. I do have stronger pain medicine but realistically I cannot take them and take care of Isaac b/c they just knock me out.
Oh and mine are generally allergy/sinus related

KeymasterI get migraines

I get occular ones, too, only with the headache following soon after and I once had one that started just w/ my stomach- I felt light headed & nauseous & then I threw up and almost passed out and then my head started to hurt- but not as bad as a ‘usual’ migraine. weird.
I even got them while pregnant- many get relief while pregnant…
For me the prescription drug Maxalt does the trick.
I’m nursing now & can’t take that, so what works for me:
a cocktail of advil & tylenol and a cup of coffee- it’s like making my own excederin, I think LOL

Firoset also helps…
but for me, Maxalt is the best
