Has anyone had any experience treating their baby with Nexium? I have searched through posts but have not seen much on it. My GI is pushing us in this direction every time I call for the Marci-kids dose of Prevacid (he will not budge). He just thinks the prevacid isn’t working for Landen and it isn’t the dose. Any advice is appreciated.

I just read another post where b’s mom, Emily, mentioned it. Maybe you could PM her if she doesn’t see this thread.

Before we got things ironed out with zegerid, my ped was going to try Nexium but we never got to that point.

Hope you find what you need.

i dont think you should go to nexium until you do the recommended marci-kids.com dose. i would find a different doctor if i had to or increase the dose myself, JMO.

there have been babies here on nexium & there have been babies here on protonix…

I would think that if your lo is on 3.5mgs per kilo (this is not what marci-kids recommends, but I would gather that this is as high as a ped gi who sees her/himself as ‘progressive’ would go), and it’s given correctly (ie if it’s a solutab it’s given at the right time in regards to a meal), then it would not hurt to try nexium. however, I would insist on caracream for the nexium…if nexium in caracream doesn’t work then I would insist on a higher dosage…

I guess you could go with what the pead suggests (ie nexium) and if it works great. If it doesn’t then you would have more “ammo” to ask for the Marci-kids dose. Its not ideal but if your dr won’t budge it is an option. The only other one is to try and get another dr to budge on dose (eg my pead wasn’t keen on higher dosing but I discussed it with my family dr who was willing to give it a go).

For some reason 30mg is often a magic number for a lot of these babies. Would you be willing to change docs if someone would give you a higher dose?

Another option is to try zegerid and to see if that works?

About the nexium- I do know of a few babies who have taken it and know someone who I met elsewhere in cyberspace who has been using it for her daughter for a few months now. I don’t think it’s been the answer for them.

Laura, can you use nexium with CaraCream? I once recall being told that you could only use it with prevacid or prilosec (I think because that’s all they did research on) but I might also be wrong. Good luck.

Jill,

I just wanted to let you know what my GI said about Nexium. It is a drug that is much more powerful than the other PPI’s out there. It is designed to not only stop the pumps (or whatever that PPI jargon is) as well as heal the erosioin in the esophagus. I think prevacid does too, but Nexium is known as the gold standard(again…words of my GI not my own…don’t throw tomatoes or get mad if your Dr. told you something different) for treating erosion. I know that a lot of other people are now hearing thier GI’s recommend Nexium…and it was super helpful to Brianna. We only kept her on it for about 3-4 months, because after the erosion was healed she only needed the prevacid. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I suppose you have two different ways to go with this one: Appease your doctor and *try* the Nexium or ask your doctor if you could TRY the higher dose of Prevacid for oh, say, 30 days. He may be willing to do that for you. I would back it with the information that he should know about how long it takes Prevacid to kick in. If you were to TRY Nexium and it didn’t work – I would think this would take 2-3 weeks – then if you were to go back to Prevacid – it would take a while for that to kick in. Ugh. Since you are already on the Prevacid, I would beg for a higher dose to just TRY (be really nice) and if he says no – I would find a new doc. This reflux/MSPI is so different with each child given their metabolism and genes. I hope your doc starts to see things your way! Be tough! Good Luck!

Thanks SO much ladies! My GI is NOT budging on our Prevacid dose! Also, I really do think the solutabs are bugging Landen. I contacted Dr. Phillips and I cannot get Caracream, but he recommended Zegerid after I described Landen’s symptoms and things. He seems to think he’ll do well on it. I am going to talk to our Pedi (not GI ) about the Zegerid and take a chance making a drug switch. I DO think the Prevacid helps the reflux, but I also know it hurts his tummy. He has a really bad diaper (won’t go into details) and seems to be in pain within a half hour of putting that solutab on his empty stomach each dosing time. So it’s kind of a win/lose for us.

Good luck getting the Zegerid…if you Dr. says no, I have heard of other people on this board who have had Dr. Phillips talk to them. It could be worth a shot!

Lori- He just said that the caracream was no longer available. He really didnt go into details and I didn’t push. I would have loved to have gotten my hands on some though!

Hi,

I haven’t posted in a long time, but do read the messages often as a source of comfort during the roller coaster. He was switched from 30 mg of Prevacid (Solutabs) daily to Nexium- 20 mg. about 1 1/2 months ago and up until about a week ago he was doing great- eating, naps extended from 1hr and 15min to 2 1/2 hours and he was waking happy also from naps and in the morning. Generally speaking he has done so much better on the Nexium and I have to say that I love it too because I give it in the morning and thats it for the day other than the periodic Mylanta/Pepcid complete. He can eat whenever he wants after waiting the 1/2 hour in the morning so I can even offer a snack before bed now and the evening fussiness is generally gone also (seems like the nexium is still in his system and being able to give him a snack before dinner is great- instead of the empty stomach/med/wait for dinner routine). I just upped the dose (okd by doc) to 30mg as he is teething 2nd year molars right now. I hope I’m not jinxing myself but this is honestly the best teething period we have EVER had (he takes about 2 months for every set).

I wanted to write because I have been looking for others taking Nexium but it seems that there aren’t many out there. Tommy was on Prevacid a long time and it seemed to just stop working after many increases, tinkering with Zantac additions, etc – so far it seems to be working. With all of that being said I am nervous about him being on it, but he really does seem to be doing better.

I am curious about the caracream? Why do you need it? I just open the capsule and sprinkle it into some food. I do remember that Tommy did have stomach cramping on the prevacid initially, but didn’t notice anything on the nexium.
