InactiveI am just about ready to cry. Kate just had the worst feed of her short life. She nursed well for about six minutes and then all of a sudden the grunting started, arching her back, whimpering. Then came the full on pulling off, screaming because she was starving, latching on, pulling off. I need help! We are on her third ped and the first two didn’t think it was reflux because all of her feeds weren’t terrible and she doesn’t cry when she spits up, have screaming bouts or anything like that. It’s just the random TERRIBLE feed. I called the on-call doctor and he said mylanta would be useless and the prevacid is the only thing that would give her relief. 15mg/day being the highest dose anyone will give her.
I know that’s low from what marcikids.com says. I gave it to her right before this feed, could that be why it was so bad? Do you think I should pump and give her a bottle? ……Now she’s in her swing and fine. I’m sorry you all are probably sick of reading my posts but I don’t know what to do.

Inactiveyes, 15 mg is pretty low. i would work on faxing the info to the doctors, or else finding a new doc.
it def sounds like reflux from what you described.
when you are adminstering the solutab, are you giving it 30-60 min before a full meal? that is very important.
i dont think that pumping would make any difference regarding her pain levels.
i would also do mylanta in between feeding until you can get a higher prevacid dose.
good luck mamma.

InactiveOh Claire, your post sounds so familiar to me, and I’m so sorry that you are dealing with this. It is so heartbreaking to watch a hungry child try to eat and not be able to do it. Ben’s feeds were sometimes worse in the evenings when his medication wasn’t high enough, I think because his poor throat would just get beat up all day from the acid.
Like Natalia mentioned, make sure you are waiting the alotted time after giving the meds and before feeding.
If your doctor won’t go higher on the Prevacid (which it sounds like you need to), maybe ask about Carafate.. it’s kind of like super power Mylanta.. it coats the esophagus and stomach to protect from acid, but it also helps them both heal from any damage. May help a bit until you can get a higher Prevacid dose.

InactiveOK, I’ve been in this exact same place twice. Both of my reflux babies’ only symptom initially was “intermittent” feeding difficulties. I was very confused because it was not every feeding, but with time it did progress to every feeding and other symptoms began to emerge as well.
I gave up nursing both of my babies and went to pumping and feeding which was very, very, difficult. I’d hang in there with the nursing and not go to the bottle. I went to the bottle with Ellie and within a week she was doing the same thing with the bottle (although she initially did better with the bottle) and she would not go back to nursing, so I was really in a jam.
Anyway, about the Prevacid… How long has she been on it? Lots of babies have some initial cramping due to the added ingredients (aspertame and lactose) but this side effect often passes once the baby adjusts to the medication. My son had very definite cramping 30 minutes after his dose of Prevacid and his feeds were terrible, but this subsided after about 10-14 days.
Are you giving her one dose of 15 mgs. or two doses of 7.5 mgs? Most babies seem to do better on two doses, so you could try splitting her solutab into two doses. It is a low dose, but some babies do fine on lower dose. I’d give it the full two weeks before you decide if it’s working or not. Are you giving it to her on an empty stomach and feeding her 30 minutes later? This is important in getting the full effect of the medication.
Good luck and hang in there. If she needs a higher dose you can maybe try your family doctor. Many of us have had better luck with family docs.

InactiveHi Claire.
Hang in there. I think that I know more about feeding difficulties then I ever wanted to, so I know where you’re coming from.
Sorry I don’t remember all the details of your situation, so if you could remind me how old your little one is and how much she weighs, that would help. Depending on her weight, 15mg might not be such a bad starting dose. Yes, it is probably lower than marci-kids, but that’s not surprising. How long has she been on it and how are you giving it? How does she sleep? What are her other symptoms? Sorry to make you repeat all this info, but I have a hard time keeping track of everyone sometimes. If she just started the prevacid I would make sure that you’re giving it properly, and try to see what happens over the course of a two week period. In the meantime, I might also add in mylanta, just don’t give it near the solutab, and see if that helps. If the feedings don’t improve, then I’d see about getting the dose adjusted, if possible.
I would consider getting a referral to a ped GI if you haven’t done that already. I might also try to show your ped how your daughter is feeding- you can try to feed her in front of the ped, or you can videotape a feeding and play it for them. I don’t think anyone realized how bad Hailey’s feedings were until I tried to nurse her in front of the ped.
HUGS. Good luck.

InactiveThanks for caring to write back everyone! It was so nice to wake up to a night of no sleep and I find that someone besides my clueless THREE peds cares!
So, here’s the rundown on Kate’s story. She’s 11weeks today( I can’t believe that!) and almost twelve pounds. Her prevacid is 15mg/day that I split into halves. Here’s a question, she was three and a half weeks early so she’s still pretty sleepy so when she wakes up she’s usually STARVING. How do I give her the prevacid and hold her off for half an hour? I’ve been giving it to her on an empty belly but can’t figure out how to do the other part yet without her exercizing her lungs to max capacity. Sleeping is a whole other issue. She will ONLY sleep in her swing during the day
Not for lack of trying believe me. I don’t just have something else to do and stick her in there. I’ll try untill she freaks out and then I surrender. At night she used to sleep great untill all this started.(three weeks ago…it feels like three years) Now, sometimes with us she’ll sleep, her swing, and maybe the Amby baby bed if I’m lucky. We bought it naively thinking that would solve our problems. ( money well spent!) Her other symptoms of reflux… I don’t know. Pretty much just the feedings. She doesn’t really have any HUGE screaming bouts or anything. I’m holding my breath! Poop has been an issue for around two weeks now which makes me SURE she has some intolerance of somekind. We have an appoint. with a ped G.I June 18th. Light years away!!!

Keymasterdon’t worry about the swing- you have to do whatever it takes, you know?
out of desperation, I did the Total Elimination diet- more about that, & me, in ‘groupie intro’- it’s the top post in the Introduce yourself Forum

do you have any zantac around? I’d give that too (2-4hrs seperate from the precavacid) until you can get things figured (more) out

InactiveClaire: I feel bad for you. We go day by day and that seems to keep me in a good frame of mind. If you have a horrible day – tomorrow is a new day. I don’t know where you are located, but have you found a pediatric gastrointestinal doc? The following link may be helpful:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=660&am p;PN=1
It shows locations and hands-on information about doctors.
It took Carson a long time before the Prevacid worked. I pushed and pushed and we got it bumped up to a higher dose but then Carson became neutropenia – due to the high dose. We then switched to Prilosec. Our spec told me that with Prilosec, it is very rare to find someone have any reaction to a higher dose. If your docs won’t up your dose, you may wish to ask about Prilosec. We get the generic 20mg capsule that has 18 beads in it and I then take 4 out. That way Carson gets 15 mg. He gets the 14 beads twice a day. (He is almost 2 and weighs 21 pounds). Of course, if you do switch from Prevacid to Prilosec, there may very well be a waiting period before the Prilosec kicks in.
We have found that Carson’s reflux is basically under control. When he is fine the world is wonderful. If he eats something he shouldn’t, has fluid in his ears, a cold, thrush, sinus infection, outdoor allergies, his reflux is way out of control. I have had to be a detective to see what makes him flare up.
I really hope this gets better for you. I would be very persistent with the doctors. The longer the food aversion goes on, the worse your baby will eat and it can cause horrible feeding aversions that last a very long time. Sometimes the docs wait until the little one is loosing weight as PROOF that they are not eating as they should be. I wouldn’t wait that long. Be persistent – you are the mommy – you know best!! You are doing a great job by trying to nurse – don’t worry about the swing. When the LO is feeling better, things will turn around.

InactiveThanks again you guys. I call our latest ped AGAIN in the morning so hopefully I can be brave and firm and demand that they do something before my poor baby has to get fed through a tube. I’ll keep you posted. This site is the onle place where I’ve gotten actual answers and it makes me feel like I’m doing something. The support means a lot!!
Send lots of pushy thoughts my way so I can get these docs to listen or else we’re on to the next one!

InactiveAH! Cutie pie. Love the new ticker!!

InactivePerhaps try to administer the prevacid whilst she is asleep and then stick the dummy in? It has worked for a couple of us. Goodluck.

InactiveThat sounds just like Barret when I was nursing. We tried the prevacid for two weeks and he got no relief. That was before I found this site. We never increased the 15 mg dose.
I would also try the zantac. I know that this is rare, but Barret does better on the zantac than prevacid. Hes the only baby I know that does better that way. The prevacid might have worked much better if I had increased his dosage, but now that I’ve found something that works and he can actually eat (he’s on soy formula now) I’m scared to switch. We tried weaning him off of zantac and that was a huge mistake. He went back to the back arching, screaming, and pushing the bottle away.
I wish you and your little one the best of luck!

Keymasteranother tip to help your courage
;FAX the doctor. keep it short & sweet. THANK dr.
.state symptoms & current meds & baby’s weight. note some improvement but not much. then MAKE YOUR REQUEST- tell rather than ask. “so therefore an increase to ___ is necessary. Thank you!!”

InactiveI am sorry to hear about the hard time you are having. I know Christine (ndrose) has posted about how she was able to give the prevacid to Myles while he was still asleep…maybe you could PM her? Also the elimination diet might be another thing to try. Brianna did have reflux, but we didn’t find total relief until I gave up dairy/soy (including hidden). Good luck and keep us posted.

InactiveYes, I used to sneak into Myles’ room while he was asleep and squirt the Prevacid into his mouth, then put the pacifier in and he’s suck on his nuk, swallow the meds and go right back to sleep. Then I’d wake him up and feed him 30 minutes later.
