InactiveI am now faced with the changes that I had previously been putting off until “summer”. We’re moved, Sarah’s surgery is over…blah blah blah. I was going to start with a MILK trial first and then try to lower her zegerid second. The main reason for choosing that order is price. It’s cheaper to get her reflux meds than it is to pay for Alimentum…but I suppose I’m flexible.

As I said, I was GOING to trial whole milk in a few days UNTIL DH forgot to give Sarah her morning dose of zegerid this morning. He didn’t remember until lunch so we just skipped it. I know there are many possibilities to test the reflux thing. I had always THOUGHT I would keep 3 doses and just reduce the amount in each dose. Now, because of this latest situation…I’m tempted to continue to “forget” her morning dose for a few days. What do you think? Has that “method” of weaning been successful for any of you? Or should I just reduce the 3 current doses and go from there?
OR do I do a milk trial first??? Eeeeeeeeeee! I am so nervous! No more excuses. On the one hand I think “she can do it, she’ll be fine”…and then I freak out and wonder how long it will take to get my happy baby back if either trial is a disaster!!
So stressful!I plan to do a search and find old posts about this (I know there are hundreds I’m sure…). I just wanted some advice and support.
Thanks!

InactiveWe definitely dropped one dose a day and then when we were at one dose, we reduced the amount, then went every other day and then just stopped all together….
Good luck!!

InactiveHey Amy.
That’s me sending my support your way! I know you are so nervous, as I know I will be when our time comes. From what I’ve read, I think there are a million and one ways to go about the whole weaning process, but I think I would stick with what you’ve started as long as it is working. Go for a week maybe with the dropped dose and then drop another and so on.. When we weaned Claire, we did it the way Ann Marie mentioned and it went just fine. I think the main thing is to just help their bodies adjust slowly. And I do think that if, for some strange reason, she isn’t ready for the wean, she should bounce back rather quickly once you start her back on the meds.
Best of luck! I’m crossing fingers, toes and eyes for you.

InactiveI think you’d know in a few days if dropping the morning dose was going to cause problems, so I’d probably stick with that for a few days. Sometimes you need that little push to try it and maybe that’s your little push.
If she does well I’d stick with that for at least a week before dropping more doses, and then maybe 1/2 one of the remaining doses for a week, and the 1/2 the other dose for a week, then drop one for a week, and then finally drop the last one. That’s sort of how I did it with Myles, a slow wean over a 4 week period of time. Then I’d wait at least a month before trialing dairy, but that’s me. I tend to be very cautious.
Good luck. I hope the wean from meds goes perfectly!

InactiveOH BOY AMY! I’m in the same situation as you!! Good luck and let us know how it goes! I started yesterday cutting back each dose a little, then next week i’m going to cut out the 2nd dose of the day, then the week after i guess we’ll cut out another one etc. I’m SOOO scared that my sweet, happy little baby will get fussy, cranky and unhappy again but I know i need to do this!!
Best of luck, and let’s keep our fingers crossed for each other!!

InactiveOK, here I am making excuses again…I DEFINITELY want to space my two trials far enough apart so that there is no question. So, I agree with Christine that 4 weeks sounds good. However, I don’t want to be on formula for another month or LONGER!!!

Another excuse – Since her surgery Sarah has been refluxing a lot (not painfully, thanks to meds I assume!?). I mentioned it to the ENT when he called to check on her and he said stress causes reflux and it should subside soon. Maybe I’m choosing a bad time to trial the meds thing? Or am I just making EXCUSES?
Meds? Milk? Meds? Milk? Meds? Milk? My head is spinning!!!
Denise – GOOD LUCK TO YOU TOO!! I totally know how you feel!!!!!!!

Inactivehmm.. i think i would do meds first? and even after the 4 weeks.. i would give it like 2 weeks if it going good.. than do the milk..
i know very long process.. but i know you know what its like to 2nd guess yourself..
..and fall into the which is which guessing game. soo to be safe…. i would lower her dosages over the next couple weeks.. maybe it’ll take 2 or 3 weeks .. than like i said wait a week or two to be sure. g’luck.. keep me updated on how it goes!!! i am sure she’ll be fine!

InactiveI suppose if the milk intolerance contributes to the reflux, then I would do the meds first. If that works I would then do the milk. That way if her reflux flairs on normal milk you will know that it is the milk causing the reflux and you can just go back to formula…rather than back on meds. Does that makes sense??????

InactiveAmy:
When we were in your situation, I emailed Dr. Phillips and he said to take away the afternoon dose first for one week, then take away the morning dose, wait a week, then try the evening dose. It worked great for us until we tried taking away the evening dose and we are still only on that. I remember that head spinning feeling – it does get better!!

InactiveGood luck! Keep us posted.

InactiveAmy,
Here is what we did…first we reduced Briannas meds until she was on the “standard” dose of prevacid (15mgs). Once she was there I felt better because her dose wasn’t that high so then we did a milk trial. Then we did the final dose or prevacid. We still have her on pepcid complete, but we are going to try and wean that too in a month or so. Good luck!

InactiveEmily – I guess I never realized that Brianna is med free! That’s great! How long has she been off prevacid? I really like your idea of doing a “half way” wean and then trialing milk…We’ll see how the beginning stage goes.
We are on day 2 of 2 doses. Don’t worry…I won’t give you the daily play by play of our wean…
I know it’s probably too early to tell anything still but she DID reflux 2 or 3 times today and didn’t even wince…so that’s good, right? My main questions that I want to ask NOW before it becomes necessary. How long will it take before I “SHOULD” see a difference? I know it probably stays in your system for a little while…just wondering after how many days I can take a small sigh of relief and not be on pins and needles. ALSO, I know rebound reflux can be common during a wean. How long is the rebound supposed to last? I don’t want to “give in” the first sign of flare up if it is just her body adjusting…but I don’t want to prolong putting her back on meds if that is what she really needs.
Sorry so many questions…I’m just a nervous wreck! Thanks so much ladies!

InactiveAmy, I’m just going to piggyback on your thread—I have the same questions. This is day 3 of Dagney’s lower doses (since she was on 10 mg 3/day of Prevacid, I’ve lowered her to 7.5 3/day, then next week we’ll go to 2 doses, then the next 1 etc), and I’m also wondering how long it may take to show signs of problems, if I do see signs, how long do I wait to let it continue, and then if it still goes on after a certain amoutn of time, do I put her back up to the higher dose??
I was also going to wait at least 2 weeks in between no prevacid & the Nutramigen trial, which is hopefully long enough for whatever could but hopefully not happen!

InactiveI wasn’t to worried about hearing or seeing the reflux if it wasn’t bothering Alana. I waited for the pain, and it didn’t come consistently and it took about 2-3 weeks after the final wean for me to realise I hadn’t seen any relux pain. So I would think you will know if it isn’t working because you will start seeing reflux pain, but if you don’t after 2-3 weeks I think it would be worth trying the next reduction.

InactiveI agree with Alana…2-3 weeks is a good amount of time to give before saying “OK she is fine with this dose” I know it is annoying, but slow and steady is the best way to do it.
