InactiveWith Justice the first time we took him off it was 5 1/2 days until we saw that he needed it again. The second time around he was done for good. Please keep us updated.

InactiveCan I ask a really dumb question? Why do you think that Sarah was ready to wean from the meds. when she is still refluxing? I ask this because Ben still refluxes, but it’s not the projectile vomit that it used to be… more silent with the occasional spit up. I guess I’m just wondering because I’ve been waiting for him to not be refluxing at all, but then you mentioned that Sarah does still reflux a bit and I’ve read where other babies still reflux after the wean too… I guess I’m just confused.

Inactivenaomi,
shane still refluxes.. not nearly as much as when he was an infant. he usually spits up one or 2 times a day now..and i will hear a wet burp once or twice. BUT no pain whatsoever. soo it could go from very acidic spit up to i guess you would call it non acid spit up.

InactiveNaomi, reflux in itelf is relatively normal. Its the pain that makes it a problem. Of course when they are on meds hypothetically it is that which is controlling the pain. I think “to wean or not to wean” probably involves a bit of a gut feeling. If its got better and not worse or if its not worse during teething or feeling sick may help you go with your gut?

InactiveThat’s how I saw it too. The GI was happy that Dagney’s for the most part stopped spitting up, and I was too. Also, she got a 3rd tooth & it was just there one day–there was no spike in reflux pain or anything, so we’ve decided to start to wean. I still hear her refluxing, but nothing’s coming up and she doesn’t seem phased by it at all. Dagney’s going for her 9 month pedi visit this week, which is the same day I was going to drop out her 2nd dose of prevacid, but I may hold off a few days just to be sure that the vaccinations don’t set her back, although they didn’t seem to affect it at her 6 month visit at all. (She just had a spike in refllux at about 7 or so months, which wasn’t apparently related)

InactiveThanks everyone! I know the ped. is going to want to start the wean when we see him at the 9 mo. appt., so I feel a bit better about it now!
p.s. sorry to hijack your post, Amy!!!

InactiveNo apologies!! I knew that I wanted to try a lower meds dose for a few reasons. I’ve heard that “most” babies outgrow reflux at 9 months…or 1 year…both age milestones Sarah has already reached. So it was primarily an age thing. She also stopped spitting up about 2 months ago completely – even though I do hear her reflux occassionally. (Yay no more bibs!) Combined with having the entire summer off to monitor and analyze every little whimper and whine…I thought I’d give it a whirl.
Shelby – DARN IT!!!!!!!!! I was soooooooooo excited that Sarah has been FANTASTICALLY happy for the past 4 days with lower meds…but now I’m thinking I shouldn’t throw a party yet…

InactiveFour days is great!
It is very possible that with Justice he didn’t need the meds at all. It is very possible that he was teething and I just assumed it was the reflux. I wouldn’t celebrate yet, but I think her being a year you are probably in the clear. Please keep us updated. I hope for you and Sarah she is done with meds. I have a good feeling about it.

InactiveTHings have been going great with Dagney for the last 6 days, but tonight she had a rough time getting to sleep. I’m hoping it’s not the lesser dose of the Prevacid, she actually spit up her bedtime dose, but I decided not to re-dose her since we’re trying to wean anyway. I did give her some Mylanta just in case. She normally drinks her bottle and either falls asleep while drinking it, or is sleepy, and I put her down in the crib & she just cuddles her blankie & goes to sleep. Tonight I thought she was going to do that, but woke up more when I put her down and seemed to get upset. Then she sat up and I went in to “fix” her, and had to pick her up, which after I put her down she got more upset…so i went in a last time, gave her Mylanta, and read her a couple of books and rocked her a little and put her down again awake, which seems to have “taken”. She wasn’t as tired tongiht as she normally was, because she slept from 4:45-5:15, so I’m hoping it’s just that. (She normally will sleep for 20-30 mins between 4-5, but not usually passed 5). Please keep your fingers crossed for us!!

InactiveOh Denise…I hope it was just a fluke! You would *think* if it was reflux that the mylanta would have been more soothing than it seemed to be. I think the late nap may have had a lot to do with it. Sarah will cry and fuss when I put her down if she’s not quite ready…maybe Dagney wasn’t quite ready yet either and needed some more quiet mommy time before settling in??? Fingers crossed for ya!!!!

Ditto…I hope it was just a bad night. I know a few times I wondered with Alana. We also have the “bad bedtimes” on days Alana has a nap after 3pm. She has to have four hours up time (which is bizarre given the rest of the day she’s tired after two hours!).
Keep us posted.

InactiveOk, another bad bedtime, but I don’t think it has to do with reflux. I haven’t heard any of the reflux signs for a few days. I think she’s just older now and learned from last night that if she cries, mommy and daddy will come in and rock me and read me books! SO, I guess we’re re-sleep training now! The reflux seems to be ok, though…no gurggles, only an occasional throat clearing noise, not any real acidic breath, so I’m chalking up the bedtime incidents as just stubborn 9-month old behavior!

InactiveThats great (about the reflux I mean). I hope you get the sleeps back to normal soon.

InactiveHi everyone-
A word on weaning…Anna was diagnosed at 5 weeks with silent reflux (if you ask me she wasn’t so silent!!!). She was placed on prevacid solutabs 15mg/day (1/2 in afternoon and 1/2 in evening). We found relief after about 3-4 weeks on it. She turned into a happy little joy! We had even stopped waiting 30 minutes before a feeding and it worked just fine. At 3.5 months we decided to cut back the evening dose. Three weeks later we watched our happy baby turn miserable all over again. This time not as much screaming but showing all of the other signs plus really cranky and clingy. One week back on the 2x / day dose and she is still not her old baby self but I think there is improvement. I’m going to go for 3 times per day until it’s back under control but I know it could take a few more weeks. I’m not doing this again until she’s 1!
