InactiveDaniel had been doing great on the Prevacid for an entire week and gained weight. We had a follow up this Tuesday to check on his progress. We talked about how great he was doing on the Solutabs and decreased his carafate to 3 times a day. Gi told us to try cereal to thicken his bottles.
I did this all day yesterday and he seemed fine. Come 6pm and the little guy is having the worst feeding of his life with the arching, crying and gulping. It hasn’t stopped since yesterday
. Was it the cereal? Will he go back to being ok?
I’m loosing my mind thinking the Prevacid won’t cut it. I had such high hopes for it. If this doesn’t work GI said we would go back on Zantac on a higher dose. He won’t increase the Prevacid to more than 15 mg. I’m hoping we get a miracle and Daniel goes back to doing well on Prevacid. Now i’m kicking myself for even trying the Cereal.
Any words?August 16, 2007 at 4:37 pm #41230Anonymous
InactiveIt could be the cereal. Was it rice cereal? That causes gas and constipation in many babies. Not mine, but it didn’t help the spitting up any either and we have MSPI so we haven’t had any cereal since we tried it in bottles. I would cut out the cereal and continue with the prevacid. If the Zantac didn’t cut it before it probably won’t now either. But those are just my thoughts. Good Luck.

InactiveIt could be due to the cereal, or it could be that he has damage that the prevacid hasn’t healed yet, and the carafate was soothing that for him so it was easier to eat. I might try to adjust his meds back to how they were before if he doesn’t improve in a couple of days (the cereal should be out of his system by then). I guess another possibility is that he gained weight and outgrew his PPI dose. Sorry you’re having a hard time.

InactiveHow much does he weigh? When my son (born 5/10/07) got to be about 12 lbs we increased his Prevacid dose from 15 to 22.5 mg and he has been doing pretty well on that for a few weeks now (knock on wood). We do 7.5 mg in the am and 15 mg in the pm.

InactiveWell. . . another horrible night and nothing but an 1 oz here and there. Daniel weighed in at 11lb3oz this past Tuesday at the GI’s office. He has been on :
Zantac 1ml 2x day + Carafate 1 ml 4x day (He did well on this for two weeks)
We moved onto Axid 1 ml 3Xday and still Carafate 4xday (he got worse while on this)
Then he put us on Prevacid on Tuesday last week 7.5 mg 2x day and Carafate 3X day
He was doing great until Wednesday afternoon and it’s been downhill since then. We tried Oatmeal cereal on Wednesday on only four of his bottles 2tsp on 4oz and he did great until the afternoon when he started doing not so great while feeding. He hasn’t had any cereal since Wed at 5 pm.
I feel so frustrated not finding anything that works for my little man. GI will not prescribe more than 15 mg of prevacid a day for him.
. On top of it all he’s supposed to be starting daycare on Monday because i need to go back to work. HELP!!TIA

InactiveIt usually takes about two weeks for the full effect of the Prevacid to take place, so many of us have been adviced to keep our babies on Axid or Zantac for those two weeks. Right now it’s like your little guy is on no meds at all (besides the carafate). If you still have some Zantac or Axid in the house I’d start giving him that for a week or two. Just be sure to space it four hours apart from the Prevacid. (I’d give it to him twice a day and once at night if he wakes up).
**I’m not sure if Zantac and Axid have to spaced apart from the Carafate, so hopefully someone who knows will chime in on that.15 mgs may not be enough for him. If he’s not better in another week or two at most, I’d try to find another doctor to give him a higher dose or Prevacid.Another option that works for some babies is the combination of Prevacid and an H2 blocker like Zantac/Axid. So, you can ask to keep him on both meds if after two weeks he seems to be doing well, but then he regresses when you stop the Zantac/Axid. But again, I’m not sure how to space Zantac/Axid with Carafate, so you’ll have to find that out first. I’m sure someone here knows.I hope that helps some and I haven’t confused you more.August 17, 2007 at 1:59 pm #41286Anonymous
InactiveI cannot say enough good things about zegerid. It is the miracle drug. If you go to MARCI kids you can read all about it. Also MARCI kids does not recomend carafate. Sorry I cannot remember why right now.

Keymasterall this advice..hang in there…I would stop thickening, that’s just me. I have no reason other than the fact i don’t believe in starting solids early, I feel babies, especially reflux bbies, have too ommature of a digestive system to start solids before 6 months…again that’s just MY opinion…I do believe thickening is good if baby is aspirating or isn’t gaiing well, HOWEVER there are other things to do to address these issues other than thickening…ok I’m babbling…
Please try to find another doctor & add your zantac back in…that’s what I’d do…

Thank you girls so much for all this advice. The office was closed yesterday but i was able to leave a message with the answering service. Nurse called back with a script of pepcid 1cc 3x day
and to stop the Prevacid. Dr won’t go any higher up on the dose and i feel like i’m running around in circles. What if this doesn’t work either?? I was told by the nurse that maybe he would put Daniel on Neocate UGH. I doubt that’s would be the solution and it would make any difference.
When i brought up the issue with using Prevacid and Zantac he told me that he doesn’t like doing this because it may raise his liver enzymes. How accurate is this info??
I did stop thickening on Wednesday and won’t be trying that one again. I gave him Zantac this morning.
I’m literally going crazy and don’t know what to think any more. I mean all these meds should have worked already right?
I really appreciate all the advice and i will look around for a second opinion. I’m just scared of encountering another GI that would be even less agressive.August 18, 2007 at 9:59 am #41329Anonymous
InactiveUggg…I’m sorry you are not getting anywhere with the doctor. One thing you could try is emailing Dr. Phillips at http://www.marci-kids.com and asking him to call your doc. A few moms on the board have done this and Dr. P was able to bring their docs on board with his dosing. Here’s his email address.
Or, you could try printing and faxing the information from marci-kids the your son’s doctor and then call and ask to talk to him about it. This is what finally swayed my son’s doctor.Another option that has worked for some moms on the board is to try their family doctor. Family docs see adults with reflux all the time so sometimes they are more sympathetic about the pain it causes and more comfortable and familiar with PPI meds.Unfortutely if the dose is not high enough it just won’t work. My poor little guy was on a too low dose for many weeks with no improvment. Once he was on the marci-kids dose things finally turned around.Good luck and keep us posted.August 18, 2007 at 3:10 pm #41344hellbennt
Keymasterok so I would continue with the prevacid AND the pepcid- just make sure to give the pepcid 4hrs seperate from the prevacid
disclaimer: I am not a doctor. however, my son was on both zantac (like pepcid) and PPIs at the same time and he’s now 3 years no meds & FINE, hallelujah!

InactiveDr. Phillips is a life safer. My daughter actually got worst in Children’s hospital in Seattle. He set everyone straight, got Maggie on the right dose of medication and within 12 hours she was doing so much better it was unreal.

InactiveYani – your baby sounds like mine (mine was born 6-29-07) we was diagnosed early too. He screams through his feedings & arches himself backwards & almost refuses his feedings. He is on thickened formula with rice cereal & he is also on zantac. it is not helping at all!! we are going back to the dr with all the advice on this board – I am going crazy too! you can email me at DTLeahB13@aol.com to chat if you want. (oh and all our issues came up too just as I was getting ready to go back to work!!!) – Leah

InactiveI feel so sad for your situation. We all know to some extent what that desperation is like. I am NO expert, just dealing with it myself. I will say, to reiterate a previous reply, taht avoiding cereal thickeners is a really important idea, even oatmeal. Also, as one who wonders, too, why my daughter is on such a low dose, that the idea of having MARCI docs contact your GI doc, or going to your pd, may be a very good idea. I mean, it’s not like you want to drug up your baby– you want to help him, and when they don’t get enough of what they need, it does not work.
Good luck. Please keep us posted. I was going to talk about b/f advice, but I think your baby is formula-fed.Love,AlAugust 23, 2007 at 6:26 pm #41558Anonymous
InactiveMy daughtewr who we just got weighed today is 18 lb 5 oz and is on 36 mg of prevacid, three times a day, she was on 22.5 at 15 lbs and we had to increase it, then we saw much improvement.
