InactiveMy daughter is on Prevacid (compound) and I think it is helping. I hope.
She’s been dealing with health issues since three weeks old–not considered major, but major in that they’ve affected her whole sleep routine. She has had the milk protein allergy and is on Neocate. But that was quite painful for her for probably two months, and in that time, we held her a lot, even in the middle of the night, because of the pain.Underneath that problem we think is/was the reflux. She once was content to be left lying on her own but with all the holding, she no longer is that “angel” baby! Since I know crying exacerbates reflux, I’m paranoid. I want to teach her to settle herself in her crib and nap on her own, but I don’t know what to make of her cries.I know she is programmed–but the question is, to what extent?
When she is crying in her crib and I pick her up, she often almost immediately stops crying. And when I put her down, she often almost immediately starts crying. Initially one would think that this is the desire to be held–but I’m wondering if she could be programmed to anticipate pain from reflux (being on her back)? What are your best guesses–would a baby stop and start crying that quickly if reflux was really the issue, or do you think it’s likely the desire not to be left and wanting to be held? The girl NEEDS sleep. All this discomfort and pain over the course of three months has her in a cycle of overtiredness!
Thanks!

Keymasteredited to add: oops, you’ve got twins! hmmm….(maybe) disregard my post? well, check out the ‘wearing multiples forum’ at http://www.thebabywearer.com/forumthis is my solution:hold that baby!! She is still so new on the planet!plenty of time for sleep training a bit later…this is my opinion. everyone has their own opinions…but I feel that this time is precious and it goes very very quicky.again, this is me being opinionated. I’m sure you will get other opinions from other members here.hellbennt2008-01-10 19:43:36

InactiveI hold the babies so much my arms ache!! Literally! You said to maybe disregard…I do not let them (her) cry hysterically, that is for sure. But the fussing and such–I’m in the midst of a version of “Sophie’s Choice” every day having twins. And someone has to cry. So if I knew that she was in pain, then she’d be ‘the choice’ of the moment. But if she wasn’t, I’d be freed up to hold whomever seemed to need it the most.

InactiveBIG HUG to you!! I’m not sure if you’ve tried babywearing twins during the day, but maybe it would help you not being so worn out at night? I really feel for you. both of my boys were refluxers with intolerances and colicky as can be and cried cried cried. I just cannot imagine juggling 2 at once! I don’t have much advice for you. Just remember that you are human and are doing the best you can! Your 2 arms can only do so much! Things will get easier. I wish I had the magic answer for you.

InactiveI was going to say what Laura said as we tend to agree a lot on the issue, but like Laura I noticed you have twins. I can’t even begin to imagine what that is like. You don’t want to neglect Roman due to his sister being in pain. There are other forums out there that have moms with babies with multiples that have reflux. Maybe check there and see if you can get some advice there. That being said though of all the sites I have been to this has been the best. So, if you need an ear to vent to or need advice on meds or other stuff like that I think this is your place. I wish I had an answer for you though. I hate just recommending you find another site for that question, but my main concern is you getting help.
I don’t think we have moms of multiples on here, but if we do I hope they have an answer for you.January 11, 2008 at 1:40 pm #47237Anonymous
InactiveWell, as I write I have both of them asleep in their own cribs. I put them in separate rooms last night–and because Zara sleeps best on her tummy during the day (the back arching and harder crying happens when she is put on her back during the day), we invested in the Angelcare monitor. She’s on it right now! I feel very accomplished having them both asleep right now.
“I am doing the best I can” is my motto these days! They both weigh around 15 lbs so wearing them together isn’t a great option. I do the Bjorn but that gets tiring–I am 5’8″ and weigh 126 so I’m not a heavy weight, and that is part of why I get so tired holding them I guess. I seriously think I should do some light weight training!
I feel encouraged today by all your understanding and also, the Angelcare monitor is a bit liberating!

InactiveOK, just had to add, you are in AMAZING shape for just giving birth to twins 3 months ago or not! WOW! I need to stop with the excuses!!!!!
You are doing a great job and even if you have 1, 2 or 12 children, we all just do the best we can and it sounds like you are an amazing mom and doing a great job!Feel free to come here and vent anytime!!Ann MarieJanuary 11, 2008 at 3:15 pm #47244Anonymous
InactiveIt’s the one thing I didn’t have to worry about. My mom had twins (I’m an identical twin 🙂 ) and she got her shape back pretty fast too. I wasn’t sure I would because I was 36 when I had them and she was 22 when she had us!! Twins is one way to keep busy and lose it fast I guess.

Keymasterthere are a lot of ways besides the bjorn to ‘wear’ babies, so I really think the ‘wearing multiples forum’ at http://www.thebabywearer.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=59 would help you…hmmm….
You are a rock star!!!!January 12, 2008 at 4:21 pm #47272Anonymous
InactiveLaura,
Question about “past sandifer symptoms.” I believe my daugher exhibits Sandifer’s symptoms; is it correct that they generally go away after the reflux is cleared up?JodiJanuary 12, 2008 at 5:41 pm #47273Anonymous
InactiveI found that the sandifers went away when the pain was controlled. Ben would still reflux but there wouldn’t be the eye rolling or head shaking and stiffening, etc.
January 12, 2008 at 7:53 pm #47274hellbennt
Keymasterwe could use the sandifer symptoms to tell if the reflux was under control- when we’d see them start up, we knew it was time for a dose increase…as soon as we ReALLY got it under control ( unfortunatley it can take a while) then they did go away…
January 12, 2008 at 9:35 pm #47281Anonymous
InactiveWell, that’s good to know. Her reflux is clearly not under control yet. How high of a dose would they put her on for Prevacid? She’s taking 1.5 ml. twice a day.
Today was really rough.January 13, 2008 at 10:06 am #47290hellbennt
Keymasterhttp://www.marci-kids.com is the place to find the most up to date PPI dosing.
also, it’s in mgs, so check your bottle to see how many mgs/ml your lo is getting
because it’s liquid, you have to check to make sure it’s done PROPERLY (I had to go back to read that it IS done properly! lucky you! )(please put all of this in your signature, as it’s hard to keep track of all these gerdlings
– go to the top of the page and click on ‘settings’ to get to your profile to add to your signature: baby’s name, age (well, that’s in your ticker), meds, form of meds, amount of meds, formula/breastfed, mspi, etc)January 13, 2008 at 2:15 pm #47293Anonymous
InactiveWhat’s MSPI?
I went ahead and tried to do right by my signature–let me know if something is missing!
