InactiveHello everyone. I am new here. My son is 3 months old and has been diagnosed with GERD. He was first prescribed Zantac which like many worked great but then lost its effect. He was then prescribed Prevacid. I kept him on both for 2 weeks then tried to take the zantac away. HE seemed to get worse. I have heard some people are doing both medicines to control the reflux. I am giving him half a tablet in the morning the 4 hours later his zantac then in the evening the other half then before I go to bed the zantac. Is this over kill? Am I being paranoid and imagining this. My husband seems to think he also needs both. I would talk to the GI about this but I can’t get an appt for a month.

Keymasterhi & welcome!
he most likely DOES need both medicines.
you can use this chart to find his weight in kilos
http://www.sfca.co.uk/match/kilolbs.htmand then please checkhttp://www.marci-kids.com/dosing.html to see if the prevacid dose is proper.
also make sure to give it to him on an empty stomach, followed by a meal 30 minutes laterthe zantac dose can most likely be increased, too.
tell me his weight in kilos and I’ll do the calculation for zantac for you.you can also look at diet as something that can exacerbate reflux.
how are his poops? are you breastfeeding or formula feeding?
how is gas? does he strain & grunt to poop and then it comes out soft?so glad you found us!

InactiveHis weight is probably 14 pounds now. He is also having a hard time going number 2. He is doing alot of grunting and straining. I took the cereal out of his bottle in hopes that this will help.

Keymasteryes. take out the cereal.
when he DOES go, is it soft?ok 14lbs is 6.4 kilos
zantac – the highest dose for weight is 10mgs per kilo
so 6.4 x 10 = 64
your bottle says 15mg/ml
that’s 15mg of the medicine zantac for every one ml of liquid he gets
so you divide 64 by 15 = 4.3
your baby can have 4.3mls a day total of zantac each day
divide this however it’s necessary-
a larger portion/dose in the evening or morning or
equal doses…August 3, 2010 at 9:33 am #66830Anonymous
Inactiveits like a paste except for yesturday it was a turd. Then a pasty material. He is also on neocate. Ive heard that constipates also. He seems so gassy and irritable from his belly. Every morning at about 5 he starts tossing and turnming and farting. I’m not sure if it’s the meds or cereal constipation. He goes everyday….just not mush.
We have been giving him 2 ml of zantac 2 x a day 4 hours apart from the prevacid. The prevacid is always given atleast 2 hours after a meal and atleats and hour before a meal.
Last night though he was weird. He woke up SCREAMING!! Then I gave him his bottle and he was fine. I’m not sure if he is in pain but I’m sure there is noway he could be acidy with both these meds. It’s almost impossible right? I’m scared to death of ending back in the picu. He was there for his sandifers syndrome. They “thought” he was having seizures….not the case.August 3, 2010 at 9:33 am #66831Anonymous
Inactivebtw..THANK YOU!!!

Keymasteris he on http://www.marci-kids.com/dosing.html the recommended amount of prevacid from marci-kids?
I would definitely stop the cereal. digestive system is in enough stress w/o adding in cereal to digest…

InactiveI agree totally!! Just hope it doesn’t cause a acid flare up. I was putting about 1 tbs in every bottle per the docs request.

Inactiveoh he takes half a tablet of prevacid 2 times a day
August 3, 2010 at 9:54 am #66837hellbennt
Keymasterhalf of a 15mg tablet? 1/2 of a 30mg tablet??
please check http://www.marci-kids.com/dosing.html to see if the prevacid dose is proper.

Keymaster6.4 kilos
Age Dose per day (mg/kg/dose) < 3 months 1.5 to 1.75 mg/kg three times per day 3-6 months 1.25 to 1.5 mg/kg three times per day 7 months to 2 years 1 to 1.25 mg/kg three times per day > 2 years 1 mg/kg two or three times per day > 5 years 0.75 to 1 mg/kg two times per day
ok so 1.5mgs/kilo
6.4 x 1.5 = 9.6mgs
you need to give that THREE TIMES A DAY
so 9.6 x 3 = 28.8 mgs a dayyour baby is UNDERDOSED 🙁

Inactivecould that be the reason he is still needing the zantac? Should I call my doctor about this? Or just up it myself?
August 3, 2010 at 10:16 am #66841hellbennt
KeymasterI cannot tell you to just up it yourself- but you might want to ACCIDENTALLY up it and then once it works TELL dr (don’t ASK) that higher dose is needed and provide marci-kids info to back you up?
