InactiveAfter recently convincing my pediatrician to try upping my daughter’s dose of Prevacid Solutabs to 15 mgs. twice a day (she was on 1/2 tab twice a day since she was 3 months old and she’s now 18 months), it seems like this has made things worse! She’s hiccupping constantly after naps/bedtime and is still waking up constantly in the night wanting to nurse. I had hoped that a higher dose would cure her night wakings after reading the Marci-kids recommendations for dosing, but that doesn’t seem to be working out. Her reflux seems to be bothering her more. She also started not wanting to eat much at meals, which is so unlike her. When I first upped her dose, it seemed to help for a few days, but then went downhill fast.
Can upping a dose make reflux worse? or is it a sign that she needs something different? Can Prevacid stop working? UGH, I’m so confused and frustrated right now.

Keymastertry 1/2 tab 3x a day?
September 3, 2010 at 8:39 am #67007Anonymous
InactiveI’m wondering if that may help. She was okay in the mornings/afternoons with the 1/2 tab, but it’s at night that she turned into a demon child (crying, whimpering, waking constantly, restless sleeper). Her naps are okay with the 1/2 tab. She’s not a fabulous napper, but she will sleep for me. It was her horrible nighttime sleeping that made me think she needed to up her dose. I’ve reduced her back down to the 1/2 tab twice a day and her hiccups are better, but her nighttime sleep is practically nonexistant. She was awake every hour for the last two nights in a row. She’s not sick or teething, so that just leaves reflux that is bothering her.
when would I give her the third dose? With her waking constantly in the night to nurse, I would have a hard time with the 30 minute rule.
I give her a dose in the morning when she wakes at 7 am and then her last dose around 4:30.September 4, 2010 at 7:11 am #67009hellbennt
Keymasterhmm…try 1/2 tab 2x a day and some zantac at night?
or switch to bufferbabies, that’s what I’d do, so I wouldn’t have to time around meals…September 4, 2010 at 10:42 am #67010Anonymous
InactiveWe had tried Zantac first with my daughter and it did absolutely
nothing for her. So we switched to the Prevacid Solutabs. Will the
Zantac work now, since it did nothing for her initially?Does the Bufferbabies work with the Solutabs? I thought it was for the
capsules that you need to break open, or am I mistaken? I feel like
a reflux newbie here with all these questions, even though we’ve been
struggling with this for 18 months. LOL I just wish I had found this
forum earlier!By the way, I tried some Mylanta Cherry Maximum Strength (I’m hoping
this is the same thing as the cherry supreme talked about on this
forum) with her last night and it confirmed my suspicion that it’s her
reflux. She quieted down for the rest of the night after giving her a
dose. Previous to giving the Mylanta she had been waking up every
hour crying. I had tried giving her some pain medication on the
offchance it was due to her teething, and it did nothing. Only the
Mylanta helped. So it’s definitely breakthrough reflux happening.

Keymasterthe mylanta ‘we’ talk about is the one w/o any aluminum listed in the ingredients…there are store brand equivalents, too

zantac just might help if it’s the highest dose per weight, especially if mylanta helps at this time (breakthrough reflux)
bufferbabies works w/ capsules, but it’s ‘just’ a switch of rx- TELL dr you want the capsule form if you decide to go this route…

InactiveI am having this same issue. We convinced our doctor to let us try 7.5mg three times per day. Our daughter is 2.5 months old and 11.5 pounds. At 7.5mg twice per day she seemed to be doing much better except the last 4 or so hours before another dose. We thought based on this and Marci-kids that the third dose would help her. We added it today and she has been SOOO fussy today and tonight. Ugh. Frustrated with you, Olivia’s Mommy! And subbing for ANY advice….

Thank you for your response!
We have been doing 7.5mg (1/2 solutab) at 8:30am and another half at 8:30pm. She was getting very, very fussy (screaming inconsolably at times) from about 4-8pm or somedays 5-9pm. She was also having all of her choking / sleeping issues from about 4 or 5am – 7 or 8am. So today we did one half at 8:30am, another half at 3:30pm and the last half for the day at about 10pm. She was very fussy from about 4pm until 10:30pm after she nursed after the last dose of the day.
We are using prevacid 15mg solutabs. I am dissolving the solutab in about 1ml of warm water and using a squeeze bulb to give it to her. I always do half an hour – 45 minutes before a feeding and at least an hour and a half (usually two hours) after a feeding. She is EBF.
Her fussy times usually consist of fussing mixed with crying at times and then sometimes the screaming. She is especially upset in the car and always spits up there too. Today there was more fussing and screaming than there has been this week on the two doses per day (but that wasn’t all that good either or we wouldn’t have changed it) and spit up more. I don’t know if it was just an off day? Or does it take time to adjust? Or like the op was wondering, is prevacid just not right for some babies?? I am feeling like her. Frustrated and unsure what to try next.

Keymasterok so 7.5 x 3 = 22.5mgs a day
good place to start…
I would definitely keep up w/ three doses, as it’s just too long (in my opinion) for her to go b/t doses…
maybe you want to give a dose of zantac or even zantac mixed w/ mylanta in the wee hrs in the a.m. when she’s most fussy? if you’re up anyway…you can use as much or as little water as you find necessary- you can even ‘just’ hold the solutab alongside the inside of the cheek and wash down w/ water as it dissolves, you can make a thick paste w/ it, etc. if the 1ml is working, no problem- just telling you what others have done

w/ a breastfed baby you might want to research using bufferbabies, as you don’t have to bother with the timing of the meds. but, for now, this is what you have, I get it!

So would you try the thickening breast milk as a next step? Or add mylanta / zantac? or increase prevacid again?
September 19, 2010 at 8:11 am #67066hellbennt
Keymasterwhoever is telling you to thicken breastmilk doesn’t know what s/he is talking about.

if it’s your ped, get another one!!!! ok I sound harsh, but seriously this was bad/outdated advice 7 years ago when I first started here (and was probably outdated even before then!!)…what I would do: (this is just ME and I’m not a medical professional)- actually what I did do
:
get bufferbabies
while you wait to get that, add in the zantac/mylanta at fussy times, making sure it’s about 4hrs from last prevacid dose (sounds like it is, if you give at fussy wee/hrs of the morning fussy time)since you’re breastfeeding, yes look at diet. why not? I did this. I was desperate.
before you do this:
how are poops? ‘normal’ breastfedbaby yellow/seedy?
is there mucous (SOME is normal, not in every.diaper., though)- mucous looks like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, it can be stringy like the inside of a banana)?
are poops green? water? foamy like shaving cream?gas? painful gas? foul-smelling gas? when baby goes to poop does s/he strain/grunt and seem to have diffculties, yet when the poop comes out it’s soft?
if there are no poop or gas issues, chances are it is NOT something in your diet.
rashes? excema? again, this may or not be indicative of something more…

It is our ped GI recommending adding rice. Ugh. Our family doc who has been very understanding and willing to look at new research (even dose according to MARCI-kids) is starting to feel like we need to try the ped gi’s recommendation of rice.
How much Zantac / Mylanta would you add at the fussy times? We usually have a fussy time in the evening and sometimes a choking, gagging type fussy time in the early morning hours. The early morning hours have improved greatly the last two nights with the third dose of prevacid.
Poops are typically yellow and seedy with an occasional greenish one thrown in. I haven’t seen anything mucousy. She does have smelly gas at times and sometimes her gas seems painful.
She does not have any rashes or excema except a very slight case of cradle cap.
September 19, 2010 at 8:44 am #67068hellbennt
Keymasterok your ped & GI don’t know what they’re talking about. you CANNOT add rice bcse the enzymes in the breastmilk break it down. it’s called amalyse I do believe.
check out http://www.kellymom.com
and look for links about thickening breast milk. I have links from GROUPIE INTRO- that’s the first post in the Introduce Yourself Forum here-
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853thickening is good for adding calories for babies that vomit so much they aren’t gaining weight. HOWEVER, there are better things than adding RICE for this- there are nutritional supplements, etc. The OTHER reason one MAY add cereal is in case of aspiration (Fluid getting into lungs- refluxing into lungs)- but for THIS you need a TEST (called a Swallow Study) to show it’s happening and then you’d be rx’d a THICKENING AGENT, rather than being told to add rice to the breastmilk. I get so upset by these doctors!!!

why would you want to ADD to the disgestive troubles of an immature digestive system???September 19, 2010 at 8:52 am #67069Anonymous
InactiveHannah isn’t gaining weight and that is why the family doc is considering adding cereal. Do you have any good links for information about other nutritional supplements?
She really isn’t vomiting very much at all. I think it is more reflux pain causing not enough nursing or using too much energy crying to gain.
