certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) click here:I KNOW this is frustrating and I KNOW it’s hard to believe your medical professionals can be so out-of-date. That’s why I cannot leave this board! My son is 7 years old and outgrew his his reflux at 15 months (thereabouts), but I have remained here. I KNOW that adding rice just may add insult to injury. And I KNOW it breaks down in the bottle (yes, I had a doctor suggest this for my son and he was gaining weight fine, but it’s old-fashioned advice to think that the weight of it will help keep things down, and my son had SILENT reflux. ugh.)

Thanks. We are at the low end of the range suggested on marci-kids for dosage. They say 22.5-30 and we are doing 22.5. I am in contact with a certified lactation consultant and LLL. Thank you for that sound advice and also for all the links. It is frustrating. I know my doctor wants to do what is best also. It just sounds like she isn’t up to date on the latest thinking. I will talk to her tomorrow about adding in Zantac. How about a med to help the tummy empty faster? Is that commonly done now?

Keymasterthe ‘only’ med that I would consider would be erythromyacin (sp?)- it’s given in low doses. do NOT EVEN THINK (ok you can think about it, LOL) reglan. this stuff is horrible.

Inactiveokay I am jumping in late, but “if” they are concerned about her not gaining weight, have you considered pumping and bottle feeding so that you know how much she is getting? I did this for 7 months with my DD who didn’t even have reflux b/c she wasn’t gaining weight in the beginning and well I am just really anal (excuse the language) about numbers and caloric intake… must be my job! Anyway another option is to “fortify” the breastmilk. This is recipe used in the neonatal unit at my hospital (I am a dietitian who is married to a pharmacist just in case you are wondering how I know this stuff!) Anyway to make 22 cal/oz breastmilk you need to add 1/2 tsp of formula to every 3oz of breastmilk… to make it 24cals/oz you need to add 1tsp to every 3 oz of breastmilk. I would talk to your doctor before you do it and we didn’t even do it every bottle.. we alternated every other and only needed to do it for a few days b/c our lack of weight gain wasn’t due to not eating enough it was b/c she was losing fluid weight from birth… which is a whole other story… but that is any “easy” way to get more calories in her. And like Laura said thickening bm with rice cereal will not work… I forgot about that and when we started solids I tried to mix her rice cereal with bm and we ended up with soup!
