InactiveHI all!
I’m desperate to wean her from neocate. Although it has settled her GI tract, she has chronic phlegm and congestion. I know it doesn’t sound like a big deal compared to GI issues – but she really really struggles to sleep. She is constantly full of clear mucus. I just don’t know what to do. Her reflux cleared up on neocate as well.
Alimentum? Her ped thinks we should try lactose free baby’s only organic. I really have NO idea what to try. We never tried lacto-free in the early days when she was a wreck on dairy. Colic, cradle cap, no sleep. Soy was horrible constipation. She is 7 months so too young to know if she truly has an allergy.
Thank you for any advice!

InactiveMy son is on Alimentum. We tried powder alimentum but he was unable to handle it it cried through the whole feeding( he is on a G button) We have to use ready to feed formula. He is doing great on it..

Keymasterok sounds weird but maybe it’s the corn? the baby’s only brand doesn’t have corn, I think it has rice? but then you’re dealing w/ milk protein (lactose is milk sugar)…here’s a discussion about the formulas & corn/rice:

InactiveLaura – not weird at all. This whole time I’ve been thinking the same thing. The only other formulas she has been on don’t have corn in them – Baby’s only dairy and then we tried the soy. No congestion issues with either.
I went to a holistic doctor today. I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. Anyway, he helps adoptive mothers w/ infant formulas and I’m going to try a few ounces tomorrow. It’s rice instead of corn based – soy and dairy free! I will post how it goes. SO many failures but we keep battling it out and hoping for success.
I’ll check out your link. You are the link queen.

InactiveI was told that the powder has corn in it and the ready to feed doesn’t.. Not sure if that is correct or not,, But it worked for us instead of going to prescription formulas. We have to have prescriptions to get neocate here, so we just can’t try it..

InactiveI just compared the powdered alimentum with the ready to feed,, and there is corn in the powder but not in the ready to feed.. Just wanted to share that.. Its also not as expensive.. You can go to coupons.com and get $3 off coupons. I have been able to copy the same coupon and use the same with many of times, even 12 at once at walmart.

InactiveMy 2nd son was on Elecare (same as Neocate) and after one year we weaned him to Alimentum with no problems.

InactiveInteresting. So, what are your thoughts about the trace dairy in it? I’m so concerned about this, still. She never had eczema or anything scary on like difficulty in breathing while on dairy – just major gas and stomach troubles plus the random cradle cap which i hear is an allergy. It went away a couple of wks after going off of dairy.
I just have to find an alternative – this clear crud cannot be good for her.
Thanks, gals, for any other thoughts!

InactiveThe only way your really going to know is trying it.. With both our sons we tried so many different formulas it was crazy.. I wish you the best of luck!

InactiveYou’re telling me! Crazy! You are right – I may as well just try a couple of ounces for a few days and see how she does. Did your sons have colic/gas with regular dairy? Anything else associated w/ it when they consumed the standard dairy formula?

InactiveHe had LOTS of gas and was VERY colicy.. It was terrible.. I will never feed him powder formula again. He would just have a hurt cry,, it was terrible.. He was admitted to a hospital 7 times, he was aspirating from the acid reflux and when we were in the hospital they would use ready to feed formula and he would do great then we went back home and he would cry again. I put to and to together and tried it, and worked great.

InactiveHmm – interesting. Sounds just like our Callie. She didn’t sleep for two months! Terrible in a word…as you said.
Cal wasn’t admitted, though! Wow – so frightening. I bet you are relieved that time is over!

InactiveI guess I’m jumping in here a little late, but I was going to say that the only thing “after Neocate” would be to try EleCare or Nutrimagen AA, since some babies for what ever reason seem to do better on one rather than the other, and vice versa. Is your baby MSPI? I know it’s hard to “diagnosis” allergies at this age, I’m currently BFing my 9 month old and avoiding dairy/soy/egg/tomatoes becuase they all give him trouble, but I’m not sure I would have figured that out if I hadn’t gone on TED. The corn in Neocate is not the corn protein, so I’m not sure that that would be the problem, usually it’s the protein that our LO’s are reacting to YKWIM? But again, you just never know.
Good luck, I hope you can find something that she is comfortable on.May 4, 2011 at 11:20 pm #68355Anonymous
InactiveAngie– Yes i am very relieved. We almost lost our son due to acid reflux. It made for a very long 4 months and we also have a 2 yr old. He turned blue on me a few times cuz his lungs were so congested and would have apnea spells all the time. We actually ended up at Children’s hospital and we used a NG tube for about 2 months but that made it worse. They finally did a fudalication and G buttion and He is doing great now and actually trying to schedule a swallow study to happen in the next couple of weeks because he is always hungry and they said he is at his max for volume that we need to see if we can get him on cereal or baby food.
We did try elecare at Children’s hospital but it made the reflux worse, so we went back to the ready to feed alimentum, and that was with a NG tube. It is very frustrating but i thank God everyday for my son.
