InactiveMy 20 month old son was recently put back on Prevacid because his acid reflux symptoms returned (he was taken off medication at 9 month and seemed fine until about 17 months of age, when symptoms returned and were worse than ever… see my other thread in the HELP section).
He had an upper and lower scope today and the diagnosis was “Pediatric Grade 1 (one or more nonconfluent erythematous or exudative lesions) reflux esophagitis” (biopsy pending). He also had “nodular mucosa in the duodenal bulb” which was biopsied and results are also pending on that.He had been on 15mg of Prevacid (solutabs) daily. His hematologist upped it to 15mg 2x daily, and the GI doc just changed it to 30mg once daily (he’s also on iron, so spacing things is a bit of an issue). As we were checking out of the hospital, the nurse mentioned he’d also prescribed Prilosec. The handwritten notes on our discharge papers state: “prilosec 2mg/mL 20mg once daily. 1st dose Sat 1/19.”I’m wondering if prescribing 2 PPIs is normal, or if the doctor possibly made a mistake. I can’t call the doctor until Monday, but will definitely ask the pharmacist what they think when I pick up the prescription tomorrow. I’d like to get it started before Monday if it’s safe because of my son’s serious issues without reflux medication (though he does seem to be greatly improved on just the Prevacid).January 19, 2013 at 10:21 am #71466hellbennt
KeymasterI’m not sure- maybe to get 2 doses in there? I have to say that if you can split the solutabs in 1/2 and give 3 doses of 15mgs that might be the best?
babies’ metablolisms are fast- they ‘speed through’ the dose- that’s why it’s best to space the doses out- to get full coverage…
also I’d stay away from the liquid- they seem to never be made right.
I’d email/contact dr philips at the university of missouri directly-
he’ll answer you…

InactiveThe only problem with multiple doses is that he’s also on iron, which had to be taken either two hours before or four hours after any antacid. So, I give the Prevacid in the morning, then have to wait four hours to give the iron, then a few hours later give the second dose of iron, then wait two hours for the second PPI dose. There simply are not enough hours in the day, especially when you factor in that the PPIs have to be given on an empty stomach 30 minutes before a meal and the iron has to be given with meals.
