My 20 month old son was recently put back on Prevacid because his acid reflux symptoms returned (he was taken off medication at 9 month and seemed fine until about 17 months of age, when symptoms returned and were worse than ever… see my other thread in the HELP section).
He had an upper and lower scope today and the diagnosis was “Pediatric Grade 1 (one or more nonconfluent erythematous or exudative lesions) reflux esophagitis” (biopsy pending). He also had “nodular mucosa in the duodenal bulb” which was biopsied and results are also pending on that.
He had been on 15mg of Prevacid (solutabs) daily. His hematologist upped it to 15mg 2x daily, and the GI doc just changed it to 30mg once daily (he’s also on iron, so spacing things is a bit of an issue).
As we were checking out of the hospital, the nurse mentioned he’d also prescribed Prilosec. The handwritten notes on our discharge papers state: “prilosec 2mg/mL 20mg once daily. 1st dose Sat 1/19.”
I’m wondering if prescribing 2 PPIs is normal, or if the doctor possibly made a mistake. I can’t call the doctor until Monday, but will definitely ask the pharmacist what they think when I pick up the prescription tomorrow. I’d like to get it started before Monday if it’s safe because of my son’s serious issues without reflux medication (though he does seem to be greatly improved on just the Prevacid).
