i’m at a loss. my 1 year old son has been on a daily regimen of prevacid (morning) and zantac (evening) since he was just a couple of months old. he had also been on alimentum due to bloody spit up when on milk based formula and severe constipation (breath smelled like bile) on soy. at about 9 months, we were able to successfully switch him to similac’s organic milk based formula. we have also quesitoned a possible reaction to corn as when he ingest certain things, he will break out and corn has been the one consistent ingredient.
about a month ago, we transitioned him to regular milk. he’s had what i feel is some reflux flares since then (more coughin, gagging, and nasty wet burps). his pediatrician still wants us to eliminate the zantac by his 15 month appointment…. the 2 days i tried to beging lowering it to try to wean him, he woke up screaming multiple times during the night. i put him back on the full dose.his burps have been getting progressively worse to where it is starting to bother him.this past weekend, he started to break out in a nasty diaper rash-no changes in type/brand of diaper or anything. nothing is touching his diaper rash. we’ve eliminated diaper wipes, tried a&d, his prescription ketocronizole cream, tried hydrocortisone cream, neosporin, and now we are onto mylanta. (note~desitin and zinc containing creams always seem to aggravate his diaper rashes, so we don’t even bother with those any more….) we switched diapers to the huggies natural ones and we have been airing out his bum when possible.every once in awhile, the rash begins to retreat a little, but then comes back full force to where his skin cracks and bleeds.he has also been pooping nonstop since sunday. it has not been diarrhea at all, but he is going as much as every half hour during the day and even at night, which is highly unusual for him. alot of the times it is very light in color or like an orangey/coral/brickish weird color that i haven’t seen from him before… no change in his diet other than adding in that milk in the past month….any ideas on what could be behind this? and more importantly, how to get him comfortable and the rash under control??? he’s pretty much always had some degree of diaper rash no matter what we do. his ped is starting to get more concerned about it since nothing gets rid of it….June 17, 2010 at 10:19 am #66501AnonymousInactiveI would seriously consider the possibility of a milk intolerance. The symptoms are not always immediately apparent. Since he was fine on Alimentum, I’d put him back on that for a good month or two and see if the rash subsides, and continue to avoid corn products. Many babies with intolerances don’t outgrow them by 1 year. I think it’s closer to 18 months for many of them.
Make sure you use a good barrier cream at each diaper change until the rash is gone. Hmmm… that’s odd about the zinc oxide making things worse. Maybe something like bag balm for a barrier cream? The frequent stools (possibly due to milk intolerance) are likely causing the rash and once that subsides the rash should improve.
I hope he’s feeling better soon. Ugh… those rashes can really be nasty.ndrose2010-06-17 10:20:47
July 9, 2010 at 5:00 pm #66664AnonymousInactivei did get the rash under control, finally. california babie’s calendula cream finally cleared up the existing rash. we also cut corn containing products back out and also stopped regular milk and replaced it with coconut milk for awhile. daycare forgot to read labels carefully, so he has stillbeen getting some amount of corn hidden in things like chicken nuggets though.
the milk seems to be the big offender! we ran out of coconut milk about 2 weeks in and target was out so i bought some organic regular milk to try. within 2 days, the rash started to return, albeit a bit calmer thanks to the calendula cream…. we bought a new round of coconut milk a few days ago and the rash is now in full retreat mode again! yay!July 9, 2010 at 5:15 pm #66665hellbenntKeymaster/* Style Definitions */

July 12, 2010 at 10:00 am #66669AnonymousInactivethank you laura for all of the links!!
so much of what we’ve been seeing in zach and what we’ve been running into as far as allergists go too! we’ve only been to one allergist who basically ended the appointment by saying he is fine with everything/no anaphalactic reactions, nothing to worry about. he said the random rashes we’ve seen with zach (my 1 year old) and reflux and all may still be caused by foods, but we shouldn’t stress or worry about it because it’s not severe and he sees no reason to continue seeing us.the worst part is when a doctor dismisses the complaints and problems, my husband then decides it must not be a huge deal, so let’s just give him whatever and ignore the problems. personally, i dont’ see a reason to make him suffer if he doesn’t have to! this latest realization that whole milk seems to be at the root of his major diaper rash is one i’m not willing to ignore. the poor kid was pooping so much and screamed during diaper changes. it has been rather easily fixed by giving him coconut milk instead.as i read the links you gave me, i’m thinking i really need to revisit the intolerance issues with my daughter too. she’ll be 4 in september. we had thought she had outgrown her soy intolerance around a year and her milk intolerance by 2. lately she’s had consitpation issues with too much milk, so we’ve headed back to soy for about a year now with limited cows milk. the one thing that has always bothered me about her is her behavior…. she saw a pediatric developmental ped to be tested for asperger’s due to her behavior at home and at preschool. but there are times where she seems normal, which made the dev. ped determine she may eventually fall somewhere on the spectrum, but right now it would be a disservice to say she is for sure on it because she doesn’t fit the exact mold. i wonder if her behavior is more linked to something dietary than a psychological issue??? so much food for though!! eek!on a side note, we’ve flip flopped zach’s prevacid and zantac doses. prevacid is now evening and zantac is morning (in the interest of getting rid of the zantac per the ped by 15 months). prevacid may be up to it’s old tricks now though and is waking him more at night….. blah. my gut says get rid of the prevacid and trial only zantac and see if it works with milk removed from his diet again. he has significantly more reflux episodes when we give him dairy, so without it, maybe the zantac will be enough. but the ped would rather us be on only prevacid, so, i’m torn…..July 12, 2010 at 10:27 am #66670hellbenntKeymasterwhy do you think it’s the prevacid that bothers him at night?
as for the coconut milk: so glad it’s working!
there are a lot of other ‘milks’ too so you may want to compare nutritional value, etc. hemp milk has gotten a lot of rave reviews – do a search herealso: you child and behavior.
I would try cutting out the soy too!
find another ‘milk’
and also try adding in some probiotics.
there DEFINITELY is a school of thought that gut issues directly affect behavior! your dd may have an overabundance of yeast (thus the benefit of probiotics- to help restore the balance in the intestines/digestive tract)!go back months & more, in a search, and search by username
MFPIx2 this is sheri. she’s INCREDIBLE. both her children were labeled on the spectrum and through diet (Gluten free casein free, at least to begin with) and probiotics she saw MAJOR improvement. then she went ‘further’
w/ more…
she lists what probiotics to use here:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8970&PN=1July 12, 2010 at 11:31 am #66671AnonymousInactivei’m not positive yet regarding the prevacid… it’s just starting to remind me of when we trialed prevacid when he was just about 2 months old and the zantac quit helping. something about prevacid (he was on the compounded version at the time) seemed to disturb his sleep. we never did figure it out, but after suggestions from a group of girls i met when my daughter was struggling with reflux, we ended up using prevacid for daytime coverage and zantac for night and it seemed to be the perfect mix for him. i’m semi paranoid of rocking the boat too much since we had what seemed to be the right mix for him. (we had 4 months of nightmare child with my daughter when she was born and i vowed never to let us or another child go through that again if at all possible…. long story!)
i’m a little oversensitive to some stuff and it may be the case with the sleep disturbance and prevacid. it could be teething or any number of issues and may just be another passing phase, so i’m not writing it off just yet. i’ll give it atleast a month unless things take a bad turn for the worse before then. hopefully within a month the swap goes ok and i can try weaning him from the morning zantac dose. my fingers and toes are crossed for this!!i have some probiotics but i keep forgetting to give them to my daughter! i feel bad! she takes a daily dose fo fiber plus a multi vitamin since she’s horrible at eating. but the probiotic is in the fridge and i go in spurts where i remember and spurts where i forget…. i need to get on the ball with it…. the poor girl ended up with a hemmorhoid (yikes!!!) a week ago thanks to my forgetfulness with her and the probiotic. she’s now been taking miralax for the past 4 days to try to help the hemmorhoid (she had been straining and slightly constipated, seemingly causing the ‘roid…). i hate resorting to miralax when i know it can be solved by either keeping up with her probiotic or making sure she eats yogurt every day! i feel so bad!i think i really just need to make some major changes in the household diet… a major overhaul would be more like it! zach will eat nearly anything you give him, so he doesn’t worry me about any dietary changes, but melia, the almost 4 yr old, is horribly picky (and often goes to bed hungry from sheer refusal to touch her dinner (and frequently the lunch before that!).) she is a stubborn preschooler! we’re so limited on what she will even consider eating that removing some of the staples is kinda scary! we sneak veggies in via things like adding them to pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, mac and cheese, etc. she won’t eat most meat. won’t touch potatoes, rice, most noodles (even certain shapes!), won’t eat any veggie (knowingly), has quickly stopped eating most fruits, won’t touch eggs, and so on. her diet is basically breakfast (nutrigrain waffles, nutrigrain cereal bars, cheerios, yogurt), chicken, bacon, plain pizza, spaghetti, pbj, and mac and cheese…..ah, the mysteries!! lolthanks again for all the info!! -
