InactiveHello!
It has been awhile since I’ve posted. I see another mom is asking about weaning from neocate as well – here’s my specific question/issue.
Our daughter has been on neocate since 4 months or so. I’ve been so anxious since day one to get her off of this stuff basically b/c of the ingredients. On one hand, I’m super thankful for it b/c it’s the only one that eventually settled her stomach – but – on the other hand – I’m concerned about the high sugar content. She has also been congested since she started it – super phlegmy from all of the corn syrup. That’s a whole other story! The only thing that has helped is daily consumption of homemade organic bone broths.
In keeping this short – what is the big deal about waiting 2 more months to wean to an alternative milk if a baby is on healthy fats and solids already? I pray she’ll be able to go to organic milk in time as I feel we aren’t dealing with an allergy – just an intolerance in the gut.
She has two teeth and one is already brownish – I feel from the corn syrup.
Any thoughts on weaning at 10 months? I thought about trying goat milk – but feel I should wean to one of the following:
Even if I start with an ounce or two in each bottle and by the time she is 1 be fully on something else? Sound like a good idea?? I’m SOO ready – her little nose has had it. Oddly enough – she never had this issue while on dairy or soy.

Keymasteryou’re not the only one to find that their baby reacts to corn…
it *sounds* like a plan…I checked out your link & I would think to do rice (I might worry about an allergic reaction to almond?), making sure like you said that there’s enough fat & nutrition?or, this is probably what I might do: you could try a milk-based formula that is made w/ rice, rather than corn? not sure if you want to try an ounce of it for a bit and see reactions? for instance, I believe alimentum rtf (ready to feed) does not have corn?a post:some posts:August 9, 2011 at 9:29 am #68810Anonymous
InactiveHey Laura,
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.
Yeah, i’ve suspected the corn all along. I’m so ready for her nose to not be so itchy and full. It is awesome, though, how much the broth has helped! She sleeps flat because of it.
So, I won’t hold you to it…but it sounds like at 10 months she should be ok w/ the transition? I thought about the alimentum rtf – but – it’s just more sugar – ack.
My plan – if I take the plunge and go against the recommendation of weaning from formula at a year is to include:
avocado – she has this everyday – great fats
kale and other greens – good calcium
healthy oils – more fat! coconut, extra virgin oo ect.
and then, the obvious array of fruits, veggies and meats – a little grain b/c she gets stopped up otherwise.
a high quality liquid multi
You are a mama – if it were you – and you couldn’t breastfeed and were forced to give your child so much sugar for months – would you wean early?
She has a ped appt in a couple of weeks and I’m going to talk to him about all of this. I’m nervous b/c of the ‘rules’ – but – her bottom two teeth are turning brown from this stuff too!
Thanks, Laura – you are awesome:)

Keymasterso hard! I don’t know…(I like how you won’t hold me to it! lol!

)I’d look at all the posts- there is hemp milk, too and potoato milk and rice milk, oat milk, etc.I think they are all pretty full of sugar, but then again so is breastmilk! only it’s lactose not cane sugar or corn syrup or rice syrup…I suppose figure out which one is the least offensive?and I would put the oils right in the ‘milk’ (there are those who fattened up rice milk this way for their mspi baby when transitioning from formula)…August 9, 2011 at 10:14 am #68812Anonymous
InactiveThanks, Laura
I’ve asked so many questions online to many moms and try to include that – I won’t come back and holler if your opinion doesn’t work!! It’s just nice to bounce things off of others who have been there. As you said…so hard!
I thought about hemp milk, too, as it has more fat. Kinda controversial, though?
I make my own almond milk w/ no added sugar and have made Callie’s pancakes with them; she has tolerated it ok – I just wonder if that would be the case with 20-24+ ounces a day at this point. I agree that rice milk would be the least offensive in terms of allergies and such – but have to wonder about the overall nutrition compared to almond or coconut milk, you know? But…at this point…whatever works!!
I will probably start incorporating one of the alternative milks next week – from that link I provided. The coconut milk looks the most nutritious – but i hear it can cause tummy upset/diarrhea? But…every babe is different – so who knows. Just a couple of ounces per day and hope for the best.
Here’s to weaning completely off neocate in the next couple of months:)

Keymastergood luck! be sure to report your progress!
also, as far as hemp milk goes, I don’t know that it’s controversial like soy is (estrogen, etc)?do a search- there’s a mom on here (uses deep pink font, like I use purple) who swears by the stuff- valentine’s mom or something like that? you should see from some of the links above)…ok here goes valentine4mommy– scroll down to her post & you can do a search for her posts by searching by username, tooAugust 11, 2011 at 12:18 pm #68848Anonymous
InactiveOh, nice! Thanks for the link, Laura. I’ll connect with her for sure.
I guess I’m hung up on making my own milk instead of buying it for some reason? Although, I hear you can make hemp milk from the seeds. I dunno – making I’m making more work for myself and it isn’t necessary – just working hard to help her along as best I can since she didn’t get what she really needed – breastmilk:)
Ok – will report progress!

InactiveUpdate:
Wow – I cannot believe this – a complicated mystery as usual.
On Sunday there was a wee one with a cold and starting yesterday, DD seemed to show symptoms:( But, I also started the homemade almond milk yesterday – how confusing!
She had a bright red diaper rash and is very congested/sneezing. She’s only had one other cold in her 10 months.
Can a babe get a diaper rash from a cold? How about diarrhea?
I cannot imagine her having a tree nut allergy as hubby and I are pretty low maintenance when it comes to food allergies.
THoughts???:)

KeymasterI don’t know but seriously I would get her off the almond milk…
It might not be a full blown allergy, it could be an intolerance, or it could just be that she’s not ready. having gastric symptoms now doesn’t mean that she’ll be allergic to nuts when she’s older…
