I thought that we had the reflux under control until his 2 month vaccines. He is spitting up so much more, waking up screaming and his spit up has a strong smell to it. Has anyone else experienced a flare up after the 2 month vaccines? Does the tylenol help at all or make it worse? Should I call the doctor to see if we can temporarily up his dosage of zantac? Thanks!

Yes, definitely — we’ve seen flare-ups after every round of immunizations and with every sickness. It really stinks because just when you’ve got the reflux under control, something else comes along…

For us, we give Tylenol for 24 hours after shots in case of fever, but it doesn’t help with the reflux. You might want to up the Zantac or add in Mylanta until the flare-up dies down. If it doesn’t die down within about a week (that’s how long it usually takes for us after shots), then I would be sure that the Zantac dose is high enough. I’ve been told you can go as high as 10 mg/kg/day for infants with GERD. If that still doesn’t work, maybe talk to the doc about a PPI like Prevacid. Zantac alone just doesn’t work for many GERDlings.

YES!!! He has had flare ups each vaccine round. No fun. It usually passes in about a week though.

Thanks so much for the information. My doctor thinks that I am just imagining the flare up and that vaccines do not have that effect. But, he even smells more acidic! Does that make sense to anyone? Has anyone else noticed a change in the smell of the spit up after vaccines?

Drs. won’t admit to any problems being due to vaccines. I haven’t noticed any acidic smell after vaccines, but we don’t do them anyway, but I have noticed the acidic smell when my son had flare ups. Not that your asking, but you can delay your sons vaccines until he outgrows his reflux. MANY parents that don’t even have reflux babies wait until their baby is year before they vaccinate. Your dr. will say you have to, but trust me you don’t. It’s your baby and you have the right to do what you want.

yes, jonah’s reflux was worse after vaccines. not for too long- just for a few days after them. the worst were the 2 month & the 4 month. after that it wasn’t so bad…

Me neither 😉 ..haha.. but YES they do make him worse when we did used to do them. On the other post one of the moms explained it very well on how the immune system gets compromised which explains why the reflux gets worse.

yes, Vaccine make reflux worse beacuse it increase the amount of Hydrocloride acid in the stomach and put your inmune system on high alert. Maybe that’s why you are smelling the acidic in his spit up.

Vaccines have not been very kind on Kendra’s gut or inmune system, but every baby is different. If you have doubts or questions, please do some research. That’s as far as i will go regarding vaccines.

I agree on maybe increasing his Zantac or Mylanta dose for a couple of days and see if that helps.

We only noticed a flare up around ALana’s 6 months vacs, but it might also have been just a flare up related to it peaking or something. I agree with adding in or increasing the dose of Zantac during a flare up. For a few months Alana took both prevacid and Zantac every day and I never noticed any problems with taking both. Hope things improce soon.

we’re not vaxing until ds is older. our ped agrees that we don’t need to add anything to make it worse.
