We are new to the whole diet thing. Only about a month into it so far. As of so far, my son is off dairy, soy and gluten. I’m sure there’s things I’m missing, but just cutting out as much as I know to is doing a wonder of good for him. I’m getting his intolerances tested to make sure I’ve got the right things. He is 14 mths and about 24 lbs.

So for my questions…

1- With a diet dairy/soy/gluten free, how do I get enough fat for him?I understand it’s essential and know I’m not meeting the needs for it.

2- Anyone ever notice your refluxers burping when you’ve changed their diet like this? I just can’t figure this one out. He’s never done this before. I don’t mind it, but I notice that it’s different for him and wondered why it came on for him. Burping is a good thing I’m thinking. Isn’t it good for him to be releasing this air?

Hi Amy

We add fat to Tylers food wherever we can. We add olive oil or dairy free margarine to his vegetables. You can add up to 2 tablespoons per day. He also still has about 25oz of formula as well so he gets fat from that too. I havent noticed any burping, but then we have been dairy and soy free since 5 months.

Good luck. The MSPI diet really can be challenging!

Also maybe try and see a ped dietitian that specialises in allergies. We see ours every 3 months to make sure Tylers diet is adequate.

We haven’t noticed any burping so I’m no help with that one. I know that a lot of people add flax seed oil to add fat. For added iron and calcium, we use blackstrap molasses. Fleishman’s light margarine (in the tub) is soy and dairy free, so you can add that to a lot of things as well.

If he’ll eat avocado that’s a great source of fat as well. If he’ll eat beef cook it in olive oil?
