InactiveI really am at my wit’s end. My daughter was in the NICU for 4 weeks after meconium aspiration and then poor oral feeding. I took her home with an NG tube. After coming home I noticed that she seemed in pain during feedings. Took her to the GI and he agreed that she had silent reflux based on my description. He gave us Zegerid (40mg – I give her 1ml 2x a day). She’s been on it for two weeks as of tomorrow.
She is STILL in pain. She’ll eat a little bit and then stop and cry. She will also cry during tube feedings. It seems like Zegerid has worked for everyone here, so why not my daughter?
I am feeling desperate because I want to get her off the tube. I also am really afraid of her developing an oral aversion due to the pain. Any advice much appreciated!!!

Keymaster1ml? so that means there’s 20mg of zegerid in each one mililiter?
so 2mls is the whole 40mgs?my guess is that you’re not giving the full dose or that it’s in a ‘proper’ form?April 18, 2011 at 9:10 pm #68186Anonymous
InactiveI mix the 40mg packet with 6.5 ml water and then give her 1 ml of that, twice a day. One packet makes about 8 doses or so. Does that sound right?

InactiveAnyone?? Might she benefit from a higher dose?
I really thought it was helping the first few days, but since then we’re back to where we started.

InactiveI emailed Dr. Phillips and he said that I’m not giving the right dose. However I am still confused!
Based on the marci kids website, there are 4 mg/ml, which makes sense because I know the 40mg packet plus the 6.5ml of water is supposed to be 10ml.
For under three months it says “1.5 mg/kg three times per day” this is where I get confused – doesn’t that mean each dose is less than half a ml? That’s LESS than she gets now.
Also I am confused because if you look at the dosage chart, the dose goes DOWN as the kid gets older. That doesn’t make any sense to me… am I looking at this the wrong way?

Keymasterdose goes down a bit as baby gets older because metabolism slows down- infants speed through the dose- it goes right through them-
as for 3x a day – you take weight in kilos and times by 1.5 and get a number – that’s the dose for ONE dose- you give that dose 3 times a day- so whatever number you get by multiplying 1.5 x kg you then take that answer & multiply by 3 to get total dose for the dayApril 20, 2011 at 1:49 pm #68208Anonymous
InactiveThank you very much!
Dr. Phillips emailed me again and he said that based on her weight (8lbs) I should giver her 3.5ml 3x a day. I believe this amount includes the mylanta. Do you mix the zegerid plus water plus mylanta and then store the whole thing in the refrigerator?
I gave my daughter the new dosage this morning and she has seemed more peaceful since. Not sure if it’s just a coincidence, but I’m hopeful this will fix her issue and allow her to eat.

InactiveIt would be a whole lot easier to buy Zegrid OTC from the store and Caracream Z from MARCI-kids. Then you can mix up a 3 week supply and give the dosage the Dr. P told you to give and not even mess with the Mylanta. I have been doing it that way for a year. So simple. You will find that its probably a lot cheaper than your script for Zegrid powder packs too.
