My baby is 4 months old. She was sleeping through the night for about 8-9 hours in her swadle blanket. Now she will go to sleep in it for maybe 3 hours at night and then wakes up. She turns her head really fast from side to side and punches her way out the blanket. When I try to get her to sleep without it she startles herself and wakes herself up. I want to try to start her sleeping in her room in her crib. She has been in the playpen sitting upright in a papasan chair wrapped in her swadle blanket. I have another problem too though. If she has been taking a bottle right before going to sleep how can i put her straight down in the crib after eating. I mean she has to be held upright for at least 30 minutes after eating. I know this may all sound crazy, but I am exhausted. I would just like to know how to keep her to sleep! Some examle schedules may help too! Thanks for any help!
June 1, 2006 at 3:14 pm #8950hellbenntKeymasterhi there,
when you get a chance, can you put your baby’s meds, breastfed/what formula, silent refux/spitter, etc in your signature? It’s so hard to keep track of all these little ones
ok: is it possible she’s awaking bcse she’s uncomfortable/ in pain?
does she HAVE to be held upright for 30 minutes before bed? what happens if you put her down?
if you have to, then try timing the bottle a little earlier, hold her upright (I’d ‘wear’ her) and then put her down…
what kind of swaddle blanket? people swear by the miracle blanket and others…

She takes 15MG of Prevacid a day in the AM. She was on 30mg a day, but the doctor said we could go down some since her reflux was improving. I pump as much breastmilk possible and she gets the rest in Simalc Alimentum formula and she has Acid Reflux.
I do not think she is in pain. She has a different cry when she is in pain. The gastro Dr. said to sit her upright for an hour to help her spitting. I use the swaddle blanket from Babies r us. If I put her down on her back I am afraid she will spit and choke on it.
June 1, 2006 at 7:15 pm #8973hellbenntKeymasterclick on ‘settings’ located in the upper right hand corner of the screen. from there you’ll see ‘edit your profile’ & once you click there there’s the second section called ‘edit your profile information’ and there, down the list is your Signature
I’d try 15mgs in the am & 15 in the pm to see if it helps- seems to me, the meds have all worn off by night time & it might make her uncomfortable to sleep- maybe not pain per se, but just plain ‘ole uncomfortable…
if after 2wks of doing this her sleep hasn’t improved, then just cut the 15mgs in the evening down…it’s ‘better’ to give the meds 2 times a day bcse babies metabolize meds very quickly…
hmm…
so maybe meds like 5pm and bottle like 6 or 7 and then bed like 8pm?
or meds 6pm, bottle 6:30 & bed half an hour after finishing bottle?

A few thoughts….
First, she was probably doing well on 30mg of Prevacid because it was the correct dose. It was probably a mistake to cut back. I’d call the doctor and tell him she’s showing symptoms again and ask to go back to 30 mgs, then divide into at least two doses per day, even three. (Myles gets 10 mg 3 x’s per day).
When Ellie was suffering from painful reflux at night, she would cry a little, but mostly moan and groan. It was not the same pain scream I heard during the day. I think it’s because she was so tired and she wanted to sleep, so it was more of a sleepy, wimpering and whining. Have you ever tried to sleep with a headache or some other pain? I think it was like that for her. She’d drift in and out of sleep and wake frequently because she was in pain, or uncomfortable.
Ellie also slept swaddled for a long time and eventually I think it became uncomfortable for her. She needed to be swaddled to fall asleep, but as she got older it became too confining because she needed a little wiggle room when she slept. I started swaddling her with just one arm swaddled for a while, and gradually weaned her off swaddling altogether, but it was a gradual process.
First, I think you should look into getting her meds back a higher dose and then see if you can wean her off the swaddling if she’s still waking alot. Also, you can raise the head of her crib mattress to help keep some of that acid from backing up….I wasn’t sure if you are doing that or not.
I hope you find some relief and sleep soon.

First off, I agree with Christine that possibly it was too soon to cut back on the medication and that going back to your original dose may be all you need to get her to sleep again.
However, I will also mention that my son slept through the night for at least 8 hours starting at 2 1/2 months old. Then at about 5 months old suddenly stopped sleeping through the night and was up every 2 hours crying. I asked myself WHY WHY WHY?? I posted here asking others WHY WHY WHY. I thought maybe it was the rice cereal, maybe it was a pacifier addiction, maybe the meds weren’t working anymore. I made a bunch of changes. I eliminated rice cereal from his diet. I started him on probiotics, and stopped giving him a pacifier to fall asleep. Then suddenly at 6 months old he started to sleep through the night again. I have NO IDEA what made the difference or if none of those things made a difference and it was just an age/stage thing. It is all so confusing how many variables play into everything.
I learned from reading some sleep books that however a child falls alseep that is usually what the child needs to fall back asleep when he wakes up during the night. In my case, my son needed a pacifer to fall asleep so when he would wake up he would need it again to go back to sleep. Maybe your daughter has an addiction to the swaddle blanket. She needs it to fall asleep, breaks out of it, but then needs it again when she wakes up in the middle of the night. Perhaps weaning her off of it is a possible solution. . .or maybe not. . .wouldn’t it be great if there really was a book on all these questions?
However, I feel your pain of going from sleeping to not sleeping and I hope you get some answers!

June 2, 2006 at 10:34 am #8995AnonymousInactiveYou may also want to try giving Zantac or Pepcid in the evening. There is evidence now that there may be ‘night-time acid break-through’ with Prevacid. I didn’t believe it until I tried it with my son when he was 2.5 yrs old. He slept through the night the first night – it was like magic! I’d swear up and down it wasn’t the acid waking him up at night (he’d wake up about 3-6 times during the night) – but I guess it was. Now I kick myself for not having heard of it earlier!
**I switched him from taking 15mg of Prevacid twice a day to 15mg of Prevacid in the AM and 10mg of Pepcid AC chewable in the evening. (some even give Prevacid twice a day and Zantac right before bed – making sure that the meds are at least 4 hours apart)
June 2, 2006 at 4:18 pm #9005AnonymousInactiveKaelyn had issues with nightwaking until we increased the amount of prevacid that she got at night. Some babies just need a higher dose at night than they do earlier in the day. Of course, it’s so hard to figure out because some babies do better the other way around!
June 3, 2006 at 10:06 pm #9069AnonymousInactiveI have the same problem with my son. I went to an infant massage class and it seems to really be helping. The teacher said to start with the legs and massage the legs by pulling down and then massage the bottoms of his feet. Then move to the chest and rub down for a few minute (NOT up) and then in CLOCKWISE circles over the stomach. Then put him on his stomach and make a “V” with your fingers and move them down on the sides of his spine. The massage should be around 10 minutes. I give my son a bottle and his meds. I let him rest for 30 minutes then give him a bath and a massage. He will now sleep about 6 hours before getting up again. Before I started this I was up every 2 hours. I hope this helps.
June 5, 2006 at 7:04 am #9122AnonymousInactiveYou’ve been given excellent advice. I’m here to tell you that at four months, if she stays in your room, in the playpen/bouncer for a while longer, she WILL adjust to the crib if nad when you want here there. I know how hard these sleeping things are as we had a horrible sleeper. The exhaustion is like something you’ve never known. I know you want her in the crib ASAP, but at this point, I would do what you have to do to get her sleeping….Once you figure out what helps her stay sleeping, then you can worry about getting her into a room, or a crib, etc. I spent time worrying about “getting into a crib” and finally realized it was wasted energy that I could have devoted to thinking about how better to keep him comfortable. There seems to be a lot of pressure “out there” from whoever or just society in general, to get your baby in a crib… I just wanted to offer a supporting voice to reassure you that whatever you are doing now to get her to sleep isn’t going to ruin your opportunity to have her adjust to a crib later.
