4wks hungry 24/7 suddenly

Hello everyone,looking for some help..me and my wife have a 4 week old son.up until 3 days ago,he ate regularly,and would darn near sleep through the night,rarely fussed at all.suddenly,he’s hungry every 2 hrs,he’ll go thru 4oz no problem..fuss a bit.he’ll take a lil nap,that seems disrupted by strange noises,and arm movements,and arching of the back(used to sleep like a rock),but an hour and a half,or two after his sleeping episode,he will scream and cry like crazy…this goes on throughout the course of a 24 hr day…we’ll feed him again,and again..thinking he’s just growing.does a child of this age have such a drastic change of appetite,overnight?I think he’s eating 3x what he used to.he’s peeing regularly,but he’s not making big poops really,just an occasional tiny bit..please help,sorry about the run-on sentences :^ /

Is he being breastfed? If yes, you may try giving him a little formula before you put him down at night as it fills their tummy’s more. Maybe talk to a lactation consultant first just to make sure it is okay and won’t jeopardize milk supply or latching… Also he could be using up most of the breast milk and that is why he doesn’t have much stool. If the breastmilk is watery, check out mom’s diet and nutrition. She could probably use more water and calories…??

Is he your first?

It sounds like he may be going through a growing spurt to me by turning from sleepy baby to hungry baby. My friend’s baby gained almost 5 pounds his first month and was eating about 5-6 ounces per feeding. He is happy and healthy!

It doesn’t sound like there is a problem to me, but I am no expert! If you are worried at the end of the week still I’d call the doctor for advice or for an appointment.

personally I would NOT start supplementing w/ formula, but I understand why it’s suggested.
anyway, what stands out to me is this:
4 weeks is time enough for proteins from breastmilk or formula to build up in baby’s system and then to effect him. this is called MSPI milk/soy protein intolerance (can be allergy or intolerance) and sometimes it’s MFPI multiple food protein intolerance (can be intolerance or allergy). if it IS this, then poop description would help
if poops are ‘regular’ breastfed baby poops, ie yellow mustardy and ‘seedy’ then we have more to discuss, LOL…

signs of mspi are, but are not limited to:

poop:

watery
poops, poops that are NOT ‘normal breastfed baby poops (normal poops are
mustardy/yellow w/ ‘seeds’ that you can see), green poops (some green poops are
perfectly normal! just not all the time!), mucousy poops (stringy like the
inside of a banana peel, curdy like cottage cheese, looks like snot)

gas: foul-smelling, painful gas

grunting & straining to poop: looks like she’s
having difficulty passing a stool, but when it comes out it is soft

another thing that stands out to me from your post is baby wanting to eat a lot. this COULD be comfort-feeding. some babies w/ reflux comfort feed to soothe the pain of the burn. my son did this. other babies associate eating w/ pain and it’s harder to get them to eat…

I appreciate the responses.we are new parents,so we constantly ask questions.the little guy just seemed to be a bit constipated,our doctor said to try and breast feed a little more often,as she said it is easier to digest,but said he is just going through growing spurts,and is a little more aggresive in asking for his food..lol.he has started pooping regularly again,so all is well.thanks again for your comments!
