InactiveMy son was diagnosed with Reflux at a just a few weeks. He started on
Zantac and then went onto Prevacid 2mls 3x/day when the Zantac
seemed to lose effect. For the last month he has been vomiting more and
not gaining weight as well. Two weeks ago he was unable to keep
anything down for a few days and we thought that he may have had a GI
bug that made his reflux worse because he wasnt getting his meds(2/2
throwing them up). He had a good week or so after this where he gained
back his weight and seemed to be doing great, we even tried him on
solids. Saturday, however, he started vomiting again unable to keep
anything down. I dont know if this is reflux, illness or what. Me and my
husband were really looking forward to reflux decreasing at 6 months.
Has anyone experienced this? My son (6 months old and born 5.5 wks
early) is starting to sit and can sit for short periods of time if focused on
something but often falls forward ( which doesnt help the reflux). Also,
we changed medicines on Saturday to the Prilosec liquid. As alot of
people on this forum know it is tought to watch my little guy not gain
weight and be so unhappy. At night he does the back arching, has short
bursts of scream/crying and will not sleep in his crib. He will only sleep if
he is in bed with us. Also, when he is in his crib he will only sleep on his
stomach. All of his symptoms seem to be getting worse as opposed to
better. I would really value any advice, comments etc. We do have a good
dr. and good support but I do not know anyone personally who has had
as tough a time with reflux as my son so the insight would be
appreciated. Thanks

InactiveHi and welcome,
I’m sorry to hear your little guy has been so miserable. My son also spits up a lot and has had problems gaining weight. We found out that he has DGE (delayed gastric emptying) and he’s been on Erythromycin which has helped. You may want to mention DGE to your doctor. Of course not all babies who spit up a lot have it, but it’s a possibility. How much prilosec is he on? I wonder if he needs a higher dose. Of course that usually doesn’t help with the spitting up a whole lot, but it would help the pain. Also, are you elevating his crib at one end so he sleeps on an angle? Good luck finding some answers!Bryce’sMom2006-10-23 15:0:41

InactiveIs he teething since that can make reflux worse. We always had to increase Alexis’ medications when she was teething.

InactiveHello and welcome,
It is so hard to see your baby in pain.
I was wondering why you switched from Pravacid to Prilosec? You may want ot check that his dose his high enough as many doctors under dose….that may be why the Prevacid was not working. Here’s a link to some recent research into infant reflux and PPI meds for reflux. http://www.marci-kids.com
Is he not gaining because of throwing up so much, or because he is not interested in eating, or both? If he’s in pain and won’t eat, a high enough PPI dose usually will help alot with that.
Like Heather said, some babies who throw up alot of DGE and motility meds can help with that. Myles’ doctor prefers not to test for or treat DGE unless it is severe enough to cause weight gain problems…..looks like you may be having that problem, so you may want to talk to his doctor about that.
Well, good luck and glad you found us. My refluxers both got better around 9 months. It seemed like an eternity….but it does get better.
