InactiveToday is my son’s 4 month check up. The Dr. Is going to talk to me about starting solids. I know a lot fo you think that 4 months is too early, but I really want to give it a try. Right now he is up 3 times a night to eat, and all those night time bottles seem to aggravate his reflux. I am hoping the food will fill him up and he may get closer to sleeping through the night.
I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on what to try first or what to avoid. My son is MSPI and still reacts slightly (occasional mucusy poops) on Nurtramigen. I bought the Earth’s Best starter kits for fruits and veggies. The fruits are apples, bananas, pears and the veggies are peas, carrots, and sweat potatoes. Also, is there anything I should ask to Dr. before we start?

InactiveI can only put in my advice NOT to start solids so early. Especially if
your son is MSPI with mucousy poops, that is a sign that his digestive
system isn’t ready. You may have more nightwakings if he ends up with
gas, cramps, constipation (or diarrhea), etc.If he’s hungry, can you make his nutramigen 24/cal instead of 20/cal to
fill him up without increasing the liquid volume too much?Perhaps he’s up so much at night because he’s in pain and only eating for comfort. Have you tried a PPI instead of just Zantac?
We started at 5 months and stopped after it made Marisa feel so much
worse. We started SLOWLY again at 6.5 months but it’s only now at 8
months that we’re having success.April 11, 2006 at 9:21 am #5869Anonymous
InactiveKaren,
thanks for the advice. It is such a hard decison. The last thing I want to do is make him worse

can you make his nutramigen 24/cal instead of 20/cal to fill him up without increasing the liquid volume too much? How would I do this?

InactiveIt has to do with increasing the powder to water ratio – but I don’t
have the exact information as we never went that route. I’m sure
someone else here can address – but you’d need to discuss that with
your doctor first – I’d ask him about trying that before trying solids
at only 4 months.Good luck!

as you wait for getting a PPI, I’d check his zantac dose and ‘arrange’ it so he gets a dose (or 2) in the evening- also mylanta cherry supreme could help at night…

InactiveHe has done comfort feeding in the past where he would wake up crying and only eat an ounce, and then continue to fuss. But lately he has taken 4 to 6 ounces when he wakes up and he goes right back to sleep, so I asume he is just hungry, or course who knows!
Thanks to this site I have been using the mylanta and it has been a big help.
