InactiveHi mommies,
I had been so hopeful over the last few weeks that we were coming out of this horrible reflux fog. Everything had been so great, sleeping well, happy baby, etc. Then we got hit with the load of bricks on Friday that Sophia hadn’t been gaining weight and was now in the 25% for weight, and we had to start supplementing with formula.
I picked up Similac Alimentum, which Sophia refused to take for the first two days. I finally got an ounce in her last night, which she proceeded to gag and choke on. Why is it so thick??? I felt like we were right back in hell where we were having to watch her every second, worried she was going to reflux and stop breathing.
Today, in my deperation, and against my ped’s warning, I put some extremely watered down rice cereal in a bottle of expressed BM. And she loved it! We’re only 12 days away from 4 months, so I’m willing to take my chances and cross my fingers that she won’t have any allergies. Unfortunately, I feel like it’s made her reflux worse?? Am I crazy, or have any of you had the same situation?
Oh, and we’re teething on top of everything.
I think I might actually have a nervous breakdown. It’s almost like her reflux is worse than it’s ever been and I am out of ideas on how to make it better.
Oh, and p.s…DH has now become arch nemesis. I must have loved this man at one point, but now I can hardly stand to look at him. I mean really, if he had any good sense, he’d grow a pair of boobies and try to help out, wouldn’t he???
Please tell me we’re all going to survive this????
Andrea

InactiveBless your sweet heart and your babies! Things will get better! My little boy is almost 8 months old and at least he isn’t screaming anymore and he’s eating. From my experience, everything is trial and error. Alston has never been able to eat rice cereal. It made him scream, but I did find that oatmeal worked with him. We switched to the Similac Alimentum two weeks ago per the G.I. He has been spitting up like crazy, but has been happier. It seems too watered down (He use to be on Enfamil A.R. with is really thick because of the rice starch.) so I’ve been putting a good amount of the oatmeal in it. He still spits up, but… Maybe try the oatmeal!? Alston’s ped. was surprised that it worked over the rice cereal. She said that she couldn’t believe that he wasn’t having severe gas pains. I’ve also been mixing it in with his applesauce or pears. This is the only thing that stays down. I don’t know if you have noticed, but since switching to the Alimentum, he has gone from two dirty diapers a day to as many as eight. I feel like I’m on poop patrol constantly! As far as your husband, men see things totally different than women. My husband kept saying that I needed to take care of this situation (being reflux) with the dr. Finally I had enough…he went with us and listened to the dr himself. Then, I sat him down and told him all of my frustrations being that I stay home with him all day. After we really talked about it, we were on the same page and realized that we look at things really differently. It took me several days before we sat down and talked because I was ready to let him have it. Once I wasn’t angry anymore, we talked. We’re still trying to determine what is best for Alston, but at least he isn’t being a know it all anymore.

InactiveAndrea,
Breastfeeding a reflux baby is so hard. I give you so much credit for keeping at it. I was only able to breastfeed Gabby until ten weeks because when her reflux hit, I could not handle her pulling off roughly and she screamed bloody murder every time I tried to get her to eat. I really wish I could have continued. I hope it all works out for you.
As for the rice cereal, she may not be ready for it or she may not be able to handle it at all. If I remember correctly some brands of baby cereal have milk and soy as ingredients. Gabby was never diagnosed MSPI so I am not sure which ones are milk or soy free, but I’m sure someone will jump in.
She’s also almost four months which means her reflux is peaking. I totally understand about the anxiety thing. Even though Gabby is doing so much better these days at 16 months, I still question if she’s drinking/eating enough or if when she wakes at night it’s because of pain. I hope things start getting better. I’m sure some of the other wonderful moms on here will chime in with suggestions. Good luck.
