My son is now 13 months and has been diagnosed with severe reflux. He was prescribed Prevacid and had a severe allergic reaction (hives, swelling, unstable gate and dizziness). The reaction lasted 4 days (and required a trip to ER on the onset). Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, have you found an alternative medication? My son is in pain yet we are also quite afraid of introducing something new with potential worse allergic effects. As we wait for our ped gatro specialist to do more tests we hope to find some help from others who have been in this situation. Thanks for your replies—sleepless and scared mommy.

Oh goodness. I have not heard of a child having that kind of reaction to prevacid but glad he is doing better. The other med options are prilosec, nexium and zegerid. We used prevacid so I don’t know much about the other meds. What type was he on? Were they the solutabs? Maybe you could do the capsules in applesauce and he would do better? It could have been something in the solutabs. Hopefully some other moms will chime in…. weekends can be sort of slow though.

hi there! It could be an ingredient in the solutabs – coloring, flavoring, aspertame….if it was made at the pharmacy then it could be the coloring or flavoring…he’s 13 months, though, so I would imagine he’s been exposed to colorings and flavorings from other medicines, foods, etc?
maybe he’s never had aspertame?

next I would try prilosec? I would contact marci-kids, too!
dr philips should know what to suggest…

Thank you for the reply. Will was on the solutab form of prevacid, 15mg with water and given via syringe. Nothing in tummy prior and nothing new added to diet or new exposuresw of any kind.
