David is breastfeeding and has had probems with rashes on his bottom (they get bloody at times) and rashes on his face and more recently, rashes all over.
I have been experimenting very imperfectly with eliminating foods and am confused. I started with eliminating milk (and typical gas causing foods) and his bottom cleared up. He still remained exceedingly fussy. I added milk back in and his bottom became irritated again.
Next I tried avoiding milk, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, all grains (except rice), eggs as well as spices, tomatoes, chocolate, beans and all gas causing veggies. His bottom got better again and his face would be better at times and then get rashy again. He was still verry fussy.
Then I tried lamb and veal and don’t like them and can’t afford them regularly. I went to just eating turkey, sweet potatoes, squash, rice, millet and pears. The whole first week his bottom and face were a mess but by the end of two weeks both were totally clear. It seemed like he might have been less fussy.
I was hungry and had company and made the mistake of just eating normally for the weekend. The first two days seemed fine. by the third day he ended up with a raised dry, scaley rash covering his whole back and was very fussy.
I went back to the elimination diet but was really struggling with it. I used it through the week but on Friday didn’t have adequate stuff in the house (it’s so hard to get out with a very fussy baby who hates his car seat). I ate corn chips and had natural peanut butter on my rice bread. I also took some vitamins (which I have avoided for a couple of months because they seemed to make him fussier). He’s had diareah (sp?) for a month but then he had a diaper that had mucous chunks in in and a small spot of blood.
That scared me back to the total elimination diet again but this week he has become increasingly fussy on it, he’s been spitting up tons during the day time and wretching at times and been fussy. He still has diareah. His face is pretty clear but his bottom’s a bit red again (it had been clear for a week). His rash on his back has spread to his shoulders, arms, the creases of his wrists, his stomach and now a few spots on his legs. His head is covered with cradle cap. Then the last few days he’s had diapers with green stringy things in them. This morning he had a diaper with mucous strings and glops and a small spot of blood in it.
I read a post yesterday, in reading over archives, where the baby was allergic to all orange vegetables and rice.
I think I have to consider that he’s allergic to some of these few foods I’ve been eating but it’s hard to see how I could get by with eating less. I feel like I should probably just be trying turkey for a few days and then adding back but am not sure whether I have the will power to do it. (it would also mean serious constipation for me). The doctor Sears diet includes green and yellow squash. Is that meant to include orange squash or does it mean zuccini and summer squash?
To be honest, I’m not doing well on this elimination diet. I have to eat a lot of protein to keep from having low blood sugar (can’t think straight, want to cry, no energy). I have a very difficult time getting enough protein when turkey is my only choice so I’m weepy and not thinking clearly. Also, I’ve been having leg cramps and am pale. I feel like I’m hurting from lack of nutrients.
I could use any suggestions and encouragement you might have as far as this stuff goes!
It was hard enough to get David breast feeding after he came home from the NICU on bottles and not a very strong eater. Now I wonder if I’m doing him more harm than good with him fussing as he tries to eat, getting fussy after he eats and his skin breaking out and having these scarey diapers.

It sounds like you are not having it easy! I only pumped exclusively (could not breastfeed) for the first 8 weeks and then my milk dried up so I can not help in that department.
We did go to formula, and it was the right choice for us, but I am not sure if you are considering that as an option or not. I know other elimination diet moms will chime in and hopefully give you better advice.
I can only offer support and hope that your little one feels better soon! Hopefully those teenage boys are helping you!!!
Hang in there and welcome!
