InactiveWe’re trying to find something to thicken my son’s Neocate and he’s reacted to rice, oatmeal, and Simply Thick. I’ve seen things online about alternative grains like amaranth, kamut, rye, etc. Has anyone tried any of these on a young baby (5 mos)? I’m supposed to talk with my ped on Monday about the oatmeal and wanted to have a little research done.

InactiveAlso, has anyone had a reaction to Simply Thick? Maybe its the citric acid?

KeymasterI forget, have you had a swallow study? I think that helps you know how/why to thicken?

InactiveWe started using the beechnut barley at around 3 months to thicken. She didn’t get the gas with it. We us ST now with no problems and started up with the oatmeal again a few weeks ago. She doesn’t have any problems with it now, but like Laura posted, a swallow study may help you determine the proper consistentcy. It is not like an upper gi.
They have other thickeners like thick it up, that are corn based, but they did cause horrible gas and consipation. Like with anything, start with a little and gradually get the little one used to it. good luck.

InactiveSarah, what were the symptoms of DGE? Chase has big spit-ups even two hours after eating and I’ve always wondered if that was part of the reflux problem. The ped GI wanted to start him on Reglan and do an endoscopy, but I’ve changed doctors and am waiting for the appt with the new one. I’ll see what she says about the swallowing study.

InactiveWe are using amaranth cereal for Tyler’s breakfast at the moment, and there is no way you could put it in a bottle. It just floats in the milk and it doesnt dissolve, it wouldnt thicken anything. I know you can get amaranth flour, not sure if that would work any better. Havent tried the other cereals you mentioned so not sure about those. Hope you can find something!

KeymasterI *think* the test for DGE & a swallow study are different- see the links above…For DGE, barium is swallowed and then it’s watched to see how long it takes to move through the stomach into the small intestines and then maybe they even look to see how it goes into the large intestines…for a swallow study, I’m not sure if it’s barium, but they watch to see how the liquid is swallowed, where it ‘goes’ exactly (like if there’s aspiration), and they try different consistancies/thicknesses of liquid…I bet you could do the 2 tests at the same time?

InactiveWe noticed the dge more when she was just a few months old. She would throwup what seemed like an entire bottle 4 hours after i fed her. I put her down for the night one time and she still spit up a ton when she woke up in the morning and she was having some tummy time while i was getting the morning bottle. Our stomach emptying test was inconclusive because the nurse gave her reglan 30 mins before the test. crazy… that gets things moving. The reglan is scary stuff, some do have good results though on low doses. My daughter had involuntary movements of her extremities and shakes. We used bethanochol instead. It had less side effects. It is like reglan, empties the stomach and tightens the valve. Might want to ask the doc. about it. I had to get it compounded. Good luck. Let me know if you have any more questions, my email is listed under my profile. Sarah
