InactiveWith as much comfort nursing as my 5 week old does, I haven’t built up enough of a supply to pump and store, but daddy’s going to have to watch his baby girl for a few hours next week. So I called the pedi to ask for a recommedation on formula for supplementing. The nurse calls me back and tells me to get Nestle Good Start (milk-based).
Knowing that both my son and older daughter can’t do milk and can only do soy some of the time, am I out of line thinking that this recommendation is useless? Ds7 was on soy formula as a baby. We supplemented with Alimentum for dd3. Maybe I’m just being difficult. Anyone else here think that giving this baby a cow’s milk-based formula is a not-so-good idea?February 8, 2009 at 7:51 am #60880Anonymous
InactivePersonally I would go with your thoughts on this. I would much rather be overcautious than give a milk formula that may cause a bad reaction. Our ped told us to go straight to alimentum if I wanted to quit bf’ing.

Inactivedo you eat dairy now while breastfeeding?? if so… i would think goodstart would be ok.
but if u are just gonna supplement every once in a while i would go straight to alimentum …February 8, 2009 at 7:44 pm #60890Anonymous
InactiveI would certainly trust your instincts here. Your baby might be able to tolerate dairy through your breastmilk (since there’s somewhat of a filter there) but not “directly” w/ the formula. If it’s only occasionally I would just do Alimentum. If it’s going to be more often & you feel like she could tolerate the milk-based then I wouldn’t try it until it’s a time where you’re there to monitor symptoms, etc.

InactiveI’ve cut most dairy out of my diet… it was mostly the hidden sources that needed to be cut. I’m lactose intolerant, so I can’t really do dairy anyway. Haven’t seen too much of an improvement, but then again it’s only been about a week, maybe a little more? I’d really wanted to do the TED, but until I’m back doing the groceries, that’s not going to happen.
Sometimes, the really bad moments of the day, I wonder if it wouldn’t just be easier to put her on a hypoallergenic formula exclusively and see if that helps. But, that would be like pushing the easy button. Ugh!shanesmom wrote: do you eat dairy now while breastfeeding?? if so… i would think goodstart would be ok.

InactiveThe more reading and researching I do, the more I think that Alimentum is the way to go, even for supplementing. What I didn’t know is that both Alimentum and Nutramigen are both based on cow’s milk? Did I read that correctly somewhere? But the milk protein allergies have to be really severe for these formulas not to be tolerated? Just trying to get my mind wrapped around this stuff. I was far too blindly trusting of the pedi last time… I want to make sure I know exactly what we’re dealing with this time.
