InactiveLori, I recently started Ryann in a mother’s day out program 2 days a week that I used to work at. Ahhh…. to be away for a little while is wonderful! It’s funny how they start pouring on the tears when you come and pick them up- but usually they all start crying when they see a mommy in the room. The best advice I can give is the old drop and run strategy so they can learn some coping skills. The longer the parent stays the more attached the child becomes.
She is old enough for you to talk to her and tell her what’s going on. Have her help pack up for “school” in the morning, tell her when you are going and that you will see her after school. Ryann was freaking out the first 2 weeks and we did the same routine every day when i picked her up… saying good bye to the school, getting in the car and singing a special song about going to our house now.
Hope she starts to like it soon! Best of luck at your new job!

InactiveLori, one of my friends is going through this right now with her daughter. She and her husband are both teachers and just went back for the school year. She drops Hannah off in the morning and her husband picks her up. Hannah is fine with daddy, but screams, cries and clings as soon as mommy gets home. She throws a fit if mommy leaves the room and has even started biting her. Kaelyn did something similar for about a month last school year.
You are not a bad mother for doing this. I think it’s actually a good way to gradually get her used to social situations. As a former kindergarten teacher I’d say it’s much better that she have a rough patch now then fall apart when she starts school.

InactiveThank you all for understanding. It has been hard, but we’re hoping that she gradually gets better with it. Today was my first day of work, and even though my job can be somewhat stressful at times, it was a nice change to get out for a bit (we’ll see if I’m still saying that in a few months!). Hailey’s teacher did say that she had a hard morning today, crying quite a bit, but I do remember with Sarah that the second and third weeks were always worse than the first… I guess by that time they start to protest a bit. I pray every day that we’re making the right decision… sometimes it’s so hard to know what’s right.

InactiveHi Lori,
So, how are things going?? How was your first week back at work? How’s Hailey doing?

InactiveThanks for sending good thoughts our way.
My first week back was hectic and exhausting. I think that I underestimated how much my afternoon snooze helped to rejuvenate me (even though I was usually sitting in a rocking chair holding Hailey with my head cocked in the most uncomfortable position). I felt quite tired at work, and had a bit of a hard time concentrating, but hopefully that will improve as I ease into things and my learning curve lessens.
Hailey has adjusted a bit more to daycare, and the clingy behaviour has stopped at home. She does cry when I drop her off quite a bit, and on and off throughout the day, but they tell me it’s brief. The most significant issue really is her eating (or not eating). She’ll go the whole day without eating or drinking anything, and then when I pick her up she’s famished and parched. We’re hoping that she’ll get better as she feels more comfortable, but she’s already lost a bit of weight. I might have to call back up the feeding therapist who discharged us and see if she can consult for us as I really don’t know what to do. I’ve been sending foods from home, but I don’t want that to be the norm… I’d like her to expand her horizons a bit from the 5 items of food that she’ll actually eat at home.
So that’s really it around here. I’ve been so busy with everything that I haven’t really had much time to post. But I think of you guys often, and at work, find myself thinking that I wish I could just log on to the internet for a few minutes and see what’s going on…. sad, I know!!! (I think I’m addicted!)

InactiveThat’s great, Lori that she’s not clinging at home anymore. She must be adapting some and it will probably get better and better; with less crying at the center. The not eating and drinking must be so scary for you. I sure hope it gets better.
Have a nice (hopefully relaxing) weekend and remember to take a nap! I really love my little afternoon snooze

even if it’s only 20 minutes.I hope next week is better. Keep us posted. I miss reading your posts. I guess I’m a little addicted, too.
Oh, well…there are worse things.

InactiveGlad to hear it’s improving some – let us know what the feeding therapist
says and hope the eating/drinking gets better soon. I know what you mean
about the nap – I need a short snooze in the afternoon too!

InactiveThat is so great that she is adjusting! Over time she will become more comfortable and start eating there. Isaac is just now at the point where he will drink around other people and it has be over 2 months! I am sure it will get better!
