angry with GI appt today

The culture came back as staph. She is on Augmentin for at least 21 days, maybe 30!

She came down with this rash on November 20th. Started augmentin for 10 days on the 24th. Went back on Augmentin around December 7th for 10 days. Now, we are on it again. The DR said it can be very hard to cure.

Anyone else ever deal with this? She didnt have a diaper rash prior. It came on, just like you see in the pic. WEIRD!

Regular Staph or MRSA?

You know, I’m not sure. The nurse just called and said that is WAS staph and to keep on with the augmentin we were prescribed!

I would ask your ped for a nasal and rectal swab. It is just a q-tip swab that they can send to the lab to test to see if she is even colonized with MRSA. Or the test you already had done should confirm if it is. If it is MRSA, it is treatable, but only with very strong IV antibiotics that I think have to be administered in the hospital. I would definitly call and ask more questions.

I only know because there was a MRSA outbreak in the NICU when Dylan was there and I learned more than I ever wanted to know. The internet will scare you so don’t do a lot of unfiltered research on non reliable sites for MRSA, just ask the dr/nurse if it is and then go from there. That may or may not be why it is being so difficult to treat. But it is also in an area that is typically moist so it very well and probably is just regular staph, but I would ask a few more questions….

I’m sorry to hear that it’s staph. That is weird that it just came on like that out of the blue. I have some experience with staph, but not on a baby. My husband had a staph infection that started on a surgery site and then spread. He had it for 7 years before he finally got rid of it. He went through every antibiotic – including IV antibiotics for 2 months, & every cream & ointment out there. From our experience I would say the augmentin worked the very best, & I think if we had caught it early enough with the augmentin, it wouldn’t have gotten to the point it did.

I don’t want to worry you, I just wanted to let you know how serious this stuff can get, and I’m glad you were able to catch it early and get on top of it. If she can handle it, I think it’s a good idea to stay on the augmentin for that long. That should do the trick.

I just put a call in to the clinic to ask about the MRSA and be certain its JUST staph. Thanks ladies. I will let you know what she says.

The nurse just called me back and said that the labwork just says STAPH and doesnt mention anything about it being resistent to meds.

So, do I make sure? re-test or just see what happens in the next 15 days with the meds?

I think they would be sure, so I wouldn’t question them. I would see how she is when done with meds and go from there……

I agree. I would just continue with the meds as planned. What happened with my husband is the augmentin would take it right away, but as soon as he stopped taking it (even the IV) it would come right back. Hopefully she doesn’t have this extremely resistant kind!! (Husbands was just staph too).

Thanks! Yes, this is round 3 of augmentin. She took it for 7 days the first time, then 10 the second time.
