InactiveHi there. I am new to the borads.
My daughter, Ayden, has had reflux since she was about 3 weeks old. She would not only scream during feedings, but for hours on end, was just never comfortable and constipated. We went through many formulas and finally found some relief with Nutramigen. She also takes 15 mg of previced once a day and 1 ml of maalox before every feed. However, she still SCREAMS and spits up a lot with this formula. She has no other signs of refulx (thank goodness) and sleeps in her crib on her back without issues. We went to a specialist and she told us, nothing to really do but try pergestimel but other than that she has to outgrow it? Is there really NOTHING that can be done to give her relief? So many other people have answers, is this true, do they just really outgrow? I can’t believe that there aren’t any answers! Anyone out there not have answers and had to deal with it? If so, how long? Any thoughts or ideas or things you can share will be helpful! TIA!September 25, 2009 at 1:46 pm #64060Anonymous
InactiveHi & Welcome!
The Nutramigen (& any other formula for that matter) or the meds will not stop the spitting up… that IS something you will just have to wait to outgrow.
What can be done though is management of medications.
I think the 1 mL of Maalox (we used Mylanta Cherry Supreme though so I’m not sure how that compares ingredient wise – re: aluminum – to Maalox) before every feed is a great plan.
As far as the Prevacid is concerned my guess (& I don’t know your dd’s current age or weight so I can’t speak for sure) is that she probably has room for an increase (my ds started on 30mg @ around 8 wks old). Also, splitting the dose into 2x/day will help since babies’ metabolisms are so fast & they go through the med so much more quickly than adults.
I would check out
& look at the dosing chart & calculator (both linked from the left-hand physicians side).
The screaming definitely sounds like she’s still in pain
Hang in there!

Keymasterhi & welcome!
you’ve found a great place!the key to all of
this is RESEARCH and, of course, support!http://www.marci-kids.com is at the
FOREFRONT of research of PPI use and dosing in infants/todders. You might want
to start there to see if PPI dose is ‘proper’then, hop back here
to learn HOW to get that proper dose, if need be, and what FORM of PPI and HOW to administer…
Prevacid 101(last post on
the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1unfortunately the
majority of drs & pharmacists don’t know…babies metabolisms’ are much
faster than adults, so the drugs work differently with them…after medication,
you might then want to look at diet…I have a LOT MORE
TO SAY! and most of it is here: Groupie Intro: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853it’s looong, but
PLEASE read/skim/scroll through it & refer back to it, as it TRULY will help
you!so glad you found
us!~laura
ps: when
you get a moment, please go to the upper right-hand corner of this screen and
click on ‘settings’ and from there you can edit your signature and let us know
how old baby is, what formula or breastfeeding, MSPI or not, what meds and what
doses and form of meds and how you’re administering-thanks!hellbennt2009-09-25 17:34:34

InactiveI agree, if your daughter is still screaming she is still in pain. I would see about an increase in dosage.
My oldest daughter is 4 and she had reflux with projectiles and screamed until we finally got her on the right dose of Prevacid. She was still a bit fussy, but nothing like before.
She did outgrow it though. She started getting quite a bit better around 6 months and was able to come off of her medicine by 9 months.
Did you try Alimentum before Nutramigen? We are having some issues with my 16 week old son now on Alimentum and I have been thinking about trying the Nutramigen.

InactiveCandice – just wondering, when you say your DD was having issues until you got her on the right dose of prevaid, what was the dose? was it three times a day? compound? how long did it take you to find that right dose? did you ever need to thicken her feeds?
It gives me hope to hear you say that you saw improvement so additional details would be awesome! Thanks!November 2, 2009 at 4:18 pm #64416Anonymous
InactiveLucysMommma-my daughter did well on 30mg solutab halved and given half in the am and other half in the pm. It took about a month and a half…the dr started her on 15mg and then bumped her to 30 when I insisted she was still in pain.
She couldn’t handle thicker feeds, it seemed to make her more gassy and wasn’t worth the hassle of fighting her with it. It might have been more of an issue with rice tho. I did not try oatmeal and have been told a lot of babies do better with it.
She was on Isomil formula but had I known more about soy then, I would have switched her to a hypoallergenic formula.
