I’m wondering if anyone out there has a child or baby that experienced ‘acid rebound’ after stopping a PPI, and whether there is a way to wean off of these drugs without using Zantac or another H2 blocker.
I’ve read about studies of adults treated with PPIs that experience an ‘acid rebound’ effect of heartburn when these medications are stopped suddenly, or even gradually over a couple of weeks.
Our 9 month old has been on a PPI (Nexium, 20mg/day) for around 4
months, and we’d like to wean him off of this soon as we strongly
suspect he has outgrown his silent reflux, and we also suspect that the PPI is holding down his appetite. Because our baby developed a severe feeding aversion that we only recently overcame, I don’t want him to experience a resurgence of acid, but I also don’t want him on the Zantac because it tastes so bad.
Any success stories on weaning off of PPIs without using Zantac or other drugs would be appreciated!
