Anyone used Erythromycin??

I know this may sound strange but my 4-mo-old son was just prescribed Erythromycin for his reflux. He was on Zantac — didn’t work. Now he’s been on Prevacid over a month…seems to be helping in terms of reducing the acid. He only gets upset or is in pain from a reflux spitup about 15% of the time. However, our pulmonologist wanted to prescribe a motility drug since he’s still spitting up quite a bit – we’re talking soaking through 2 bibs after each feed, and requiring a shirt change almost every time we change his diaper! He wanted to use Reglan, but he called the GI to make an appt for us, and the GI said they had black boxed (?) Reglan due to the rare but occasional neurological side effects. So he prescribed Erythromycin instead. I know it’s an antibiotic but apparently it also is a motility drug.

I was just wondering if anyone has used it before? Does it work right away or should I wait a while before I expect to see results?

We use Ero and it helped my LO very much. I’ll say stick with it for a while and i hope you get results. In the mean time, i would give your little one a hypoallergenic probiotic to keep his good bacteria in balance. Culturrelle is great if he is not allergic to milk. I know he is little. but you could mix it with some expressed milk or water and give to him with a serynge.

We used emycin here as well. It worked well and my DD didn’t have any problems w/it. I 2nd Leo’s advice as far as starting a probiotic while on an antibiotic. We used Klaire Labs Ther-Biotic Infant Probiotics. They’re hypoallergenic and worked well for Averi. If you have any more ?s or concerns feel free to PM me. Good Luck!

having having dealt with a MRSA infection that still causes me pain and is somewhat red and inflamed, i wonder if the use of erythromycin is really a good choice since there seems to be an explosion of MRSA infections that are community aquired rather than hospital aquired.

reglan can cause neurological problems—but they are rare. MRSA has been created by the over use of antibiotics. i am wondering which is the problem to be more concerned about.

i think maybe doing a test to see if he really has a motility problem might be a good idea before trying either medication.

sylvia spit up a ton—but she had a hiatal hernia.

When ero is used for motility issues, you get a very low dose in comparison with a therapeautical dose to treat an infection. Still there are risk of killing the good bacteria in your gut plus other side effects (as with any medication). That’s why i use the probiotics.

Reglan side effects are rear (or so they say), but Kendra got tremors within 4 days of being on Reglan. It is on her medical record to never give her Reglan and i make sure the Dr put an “Allergy alert” band if we are impatient.

I completely agree w/Leo. It’s such a small dose, but if you have reservations then use probiotics to help balance out the good and bad bacteria…or…get the testing done, which also isn’t completely 100%. That’s why a lot of docs go straight to the med to see if it helps…If it helps, then it was needed, if not, then stop using it basicly.

I for one, would NEVER even consider using reglan. It has worked for some though. So, you kinda have to go w/your gut. Good Luck!
