InactiveHi all!
Well after a 4 yr hiatus, we are back. i have a new screen name b/c i cant remember my old one. i have a 4 yr old daughter who had reflux/mspi and now my son who is 7.5 weeks has the same.
our new gi doc prescribed solutabs of prevacid. the dosage is supposed to be 1/2 tab dissolved in a teaspoon of water 1x day 30 min before bottle. does it taste bad? is there something i can use to give it flavor?
how long will it take before we see results? he is on a very high dose of zantac 3x a day. the doc told me to stop the zantac.
can anyone give me advice on the prevacid? my son is already on elecare formula and i am hoping this switch will make him more comfortable.
i have skimmed thru some of the informative posts but my son really doesnt take long naps so i dont have much time to read!

Keymasterhi & welcome back!
keep up w/ the zantac for TWO WEEKS, making sure to give it 4 hrs seperate from the prevacid
you’ll need to know weight it kilos, so look here:
http://www.sfca.co.uk/match/kilolbs.htmfind PROPER prevacid dose here:
http://www.marci-kids.com/dosing.html
these researchers are at the FOREFRONT of researching PPI use and infants/toddlers!the solutabs must be given on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later
you can give w/ as little or as much water as you find necessary.
you can even hold the tablet in the insdie of the cheek until it dissolves and wash down w/ a little water
or you can make a paste of it and wash w/ water, etc
or you can use the tsp of water your dr said to useif you do not want to/it is hard to be concerned about the timing of the prevacid, then there is another option:
Bufferbabies.
you can skim through Prevacid 101, last post on the page, and read about it:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1this should be a ‘enough’ info for now!

InactiveThank you so much for the info!!
so can the solutabs be given with bufferbabies?
also i did the ppoi dosing chart on marci kids and it said he should be getting 7.5 3x a day! my doc only prescribed it for 1x a day. will this be enough? noah is only 8.5lbs and is 2 months old. should i call back the doctor and ask for more?JoannaD2010-07-29 09:47:14

Keymasterdoctors notoriously underdose.
solutabs are not used w/ bufferbabies. capsules are used.
you can get the rx that you have in capsules and then buy the capsules OTC if you want to increase on your own, if dr. doesn’t agree.
I CANNOT TELL YOU TO DO THIS.
but I can say that there have been others who have taken matters into their own hands.if you want an increase in meds, do not ASK. simply TELL.
faxing a SHORT & SWEET request (no feelings! FACTS) helps a lot, making sure to provide dosing info, and name & fax number of the pharmacist. thank dr a lot!/* Style Definitions */

Inactivei feel so bad for my son. he screams for the half hour between the dose and the first bottle. and we are having a hard time giving it to him. we put it in his mouth and hold it to let it dissolve and then give him some water. he hates it.
is there something better to give him???

InactiveI found the best way to administer the solutabs was to dissolve it in a very tiny amount of water (about 2 mls) in a tiny medicine cup. Then suck it up into a medicine dropper or bulb syringe (not the syringe with the plunger thing) and then squirt it into the cheek area. Push up gently on his chin. This will help prevent him from spitting it up. If he takes a paci, you can put the paci in right after you squirt the medicine in and it will help him to swallow it.
If this doesn’t work, try this. My son was STUBBORN and would spit out ANYTHING I put into his mouth. So for him I used to do as above but instead of squirting it into his cheek, I’d stick the syringe in on one side of his cheek (towards the back but not back far enough to trigger the gag reflex) and then while squirting it I’d quickly slide the syringe over the tongue across to the other side. This would evenly distribute the contents over the middle of his tongue making it harder to spit out. Also, he could not spit it out while the syringe was still in his mouth. It sounds more complicated in writing than it really is! Quite a few ladies on this board have posted that my little trick worked for them.
1/2 a tab once per day probably won’t be enough though. My son didn’t get relief until I convinced his doc to give him the marci-kids dose of 10 mgs/3 times daily.
Good luck. I hope your little guy is feeling better soon.
