This is a real long shot, but a friend of mine has twins with Milk allergy and reflux. With 2 tots to observe she has found peaches, apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, and squash caused distress, fussy behavior, etc. with her girls. Have any of you found this specific list to cause problems with babies already experiencing allergies? Also, I have asked our ped GI about this in the past when ds was on neocate only and had carrots and broke out and she flatly denied that he could be having reactions to carrots but clearly his whole body was covered in hives and it was not neocate…seems funny. Is there such a thing as a beta carotine allergy or sensitivity? My 5 mo old seems to be following the same pattern with these foods as my friend’s twins. Any help is really appreciated!!!
September 3, 2006 at 7:45 pm #12889hellbenntKeymasterI’ve read about various reactions to these foods here on the board…that’s all I know…
pkkb’s baby is allergic to apples…

I thought that the apples and peaches were strange, but the allergist said that it’s not unusual for children to react to them. My best friend’s baby has very mild reflux. He is breast fed and she is not doing an elimination diet, but he had an awful reaction when she introduced carrots even though she’s had them in her diet. He was covered in hives so badly that they almost took him to the ER.
September 4, 2006 at 12:27 pm #12914AnonymousInactiveMy son has a confirmed allergy to carrots and is unable to eat peaches & apples. Squash makes his face break out almost instantly. However, he has been able to eat a little sweet potatoes with out a big problem. Although the sweet potatoes does constipate him. The GI said it might be his body is unable to accept the fiber yet?
September 4, 2006 at 1:12 pm #12916AnonymousInactiveK&T’s Mom, That’s interesting about the sweet potatoes and him being too young to accept the fiber yet. Did the GI say which veggies are better for babies who have a tendency towards constipation, and which other veggies may have too much fiber? Thanks.
September 4, 2006 at 2:07 pm #12917AnonymousInactiveUnfortunately the GI did not & I didn’t question what he said about the fiber. I truly believe they have no answers & are just grabbing at straws for my sons problems. So many times I take what they say with a grain of salt. I questioned if I should continue with sweet potatoes and he said it is good for his body to get use to it (fiber) with his BM! I just wonder if there is something the dr.s are missing?
We are seeing a new allergist in a few weeks & plan on checking into this. I can let you know what he says.

September 4, 2006 at 4:46 pm #12921AnonymousInactiveThanks. I was asking because Myles seems to have very sluggish bowels and I think I am feeding him right but it continues anyway. No one ever has any good answers for me either.
Does your son have constipation frequently? I give Myles prunes, and fiber juice, every single day and he still doesn’t always poop easily. I just don’t get it. I’m almost positive that carrots, blueberries, apples, and sweet potatoes, and maybe even squash plug him up. So what the heck am I supposed to feed him? He can’t live on oatmeal, broccoli, pears and peaches!
Good luck with the allergist. I hope he’s more helpful than the GI.
September 4, 2006 at 7:54 pm #12923AnonymousInactiveVery interesting everyone. thanks for chiming in. Things sure do get complicated when you can’t eve live off fruits and veggies, huh?
I don’t know much of anything for sure with this but I will add that for balancing constipation and diahrea, I found mixing say and apple, prune, raisin, sweet pot or pear with say potatoes, pb&j, crackers, fish sticks or a banana often balanced out jameson’s bowel movements as did adding aloe vera juice to his sippy cups and kidzyme which is a digestive enzyme and probiotic combination for children. It took a loooonnnngggg time to figure out this balance for him but I see now that it works especially if we violate the balance!
September 4, 2006 at 8:44 pm #12925AnonymousInactiveHmmm….that’s interesting. I wish it wasn’t so complicated. With my first two I didn’t have this problem. The both of them pooped at least three times per day until they were nearly three years old!!! Whenever I mentioned it to the doctor she’d say, “That’s wonderful!” I could never understand why she thought it was so wonderful until I had Myles.
Is Aloe Vera juice good for helping them poop? Or for the opposite problem? Where do you get it?
September 5, 2006 at 12:02 pm #12968AnonymousInactiveAloe vera helps to heal the digestive tract from problems such as prolonged reflux. Mylanta gives instant relief and PPi’s control the acid but nothing heals. Aloe vera achieves this within a month or so.
What we used to help him poop in an immediate situation: 1 tsp dark karo syrup per 4 oz liquid, or prunes added to baby foods, or 1 tsp flax seed oil per 4 oz liquid. Our ped gi likes milk of magnesia too but I often found montrous poops on that so I stopped. I don’t like diaper rashes just to make the GI feel better!
Best cure for balancing poop over the longer period: Kidzyme probiotic-a blend of digestive enzymes and probiotic blend to restore the natural balance of the gut and allow best digestion of foods. Takes a month but is well worth it!!!
Why does it always boil down to poop?!!! My husband calls me the poopologist!
September 5, 2006 at 12:03 pm #12971AnonymousInactiveSorry forgot to add I get it from the health store-the brand is George’s and it’s taste, and color free. Just like adding water to his sippy cup and you can’t overdose on it if you use it like water. Very good for you.
September 5, 2006 at 12:57 pm #12979AnonymousInactiveThanks Amanda. I know what you mean; my dh says I obssess over poop. Well, I’ve had three babies and the first two pooped fine so I didn’t start obssessing until I had one who didn’t.
I already give him prunes and flax seed oil every day. I’ll try the dark karo syrup and will look into the Kidzyme Probiotic. My doctor’s not a fan of probiotics so I’ve always put that on the back burner but maybe I’ll try it since he continues to have problems with all the other rememdies we’ve tried.
Thanks again.
September 5, 2006 at 3:33 pm #12992AnonymousInactivethats very interesting about the alo vera. i would like to try that. did your doc tell you about that?
how old should the child be to start alo vera, and what dose is recommended?
September 5, 2006 at 10:55 pm #13009AnonymousInactiveChristine-I wish you luck…I am not sure you would want to do all three. It might cause cramping. Maybe try each remedy and journal effectiveness and stick with the one that works best. Hopefully the probiotic will give you a one dose answer!
Natalia:Aloe vera juice has been used for a long time for this-I know some of my friends were given it as kids and now we’re all in our 30’s. I am not sure though that this clear, no taste version has been out a long time. Seems like that was a previous complaint but now has been solved. My ped liked the idea a lot but the ped GI of course discredits anything that doesn’t come from the script pad. My bottle of George’s brand gives doses for under a year all the way to adults. 1 tsp each day for up to age 1 and 2 tbsp each day for up to age 5. ages 5 to 12 years, 2 ounces per day. It’s safe and natural and the people at the health store sell it all the time and say you san’t overdose on it if you treat it like a juice. I think it’s perfect since we have to dilute anyway! The probiotic Kidzyme runs about $21 – we still are using the same bottle we got 6 mos or so ago. And the aloe is $8 for a quart. You can buy a gallon I think for $24 though and it doesn’t have to be kept cold so it’s easy to ship and to travel with. Health store people can tell you a lot more about allergies than most docs can. Isn’t that crazy?
