bethanechol dosage

[Anonymous]

I have a 2 month old little boy with acid reflux. We have been on prevacid solutabs (7.5mg twice a day) for a little over three weeks now. His crying painful fits have gotten alot better. Really just having them when it is time for his next dose. This morning was actually a beautiful thing – he was such a happy baby!!! But, we are still having nursing issues – gagging, coughing, crying, then ultimately refusing to latch back on after about 5 minutes. So, dr. prescribed bethanechol – 1.2 ml (1mg/1ml) 4 times a day. The pharmacist said this is a really high dosage for a 2 month old, which is making me nervous. I can’t find clear dosage information online. Can anyone tell me if this is similar to what your babies have been prescribed????

Hi & welcome!

I’m not sure why you even got that prescription?

nursing issues:

do you have over-supply?

this could be it?

Hey there! I’m unfamiliar with the prescription you mentioned, but I did have the same problems nursing with both of my kids. For me, the problem was oversupply and a very hard and forceful letdown reflex. My milk would spray out. so, after 5 minutes they were done!

It was like being fed by a firehose for them!!

But, it did NOT help the reflux, and they didn’t always get to the hindmilk either.

I fought this by block nursing – same side for multiple feeds to make sure the breasts were emptied. I also would unlatch my son after the milk let down and let it spray into a cloth. When it stopped, I put him back on, and he seemed much more comfortable. He threw a fit while he was off the breast, but he was ready to eat when I put him back on the breast.

Good luck!
