Inactivei have been using Avent for 5 months now. i am so sick and tired of the leaking.
i have tried tha playtex nursers and he just collapses the nipples. they are sort of flimsy compared to the avent nipples.
i am thinking about dr browns wide necks since they are similair to avent shape. i heard you cant shake the formula in these bottles..is that true? and if that is the case what would i do when i go out?October 21, 2006 at 1:59 pm #16297Anonymous
InactiveI love the Dr. Brown’s bottles. We use “mixing bottles” at home. They are tall, skinny, cheap bottles that someone gave us as a gift. We use the caps from the bottles for storing breast milk that came with our breast pump. When I go out, I just bring one of the mixing bottles with me. Then I can shake the formula up in that and then pour it into the Dr. Brown’s bottle. I also will often just bring a prepared bottle with me when I go out. She doesn’t like her bottles cold, but she will drink it (it just takes longer).

Inactivethats kind of a pain. why is it that you cant mix in the DB?

InactiveYou can’t shake up the powder with the vent in there or it will clog up. You can’t shake it with the vent out, or the bottle leaks. I actually do find it a pain. (I also don’t like cleaning all the little parts). But I was just happy to find a bottle that would work with the thickening, so I still use it. (It’s NOT fun for us at night though)

Inactivelori, how do you thicken the cereal with the dr. browns bttls?? and what flow nipple do u use? i have had a hard time with the thickening and the dr browns. also natalia: i have found that the db bottles do leak for me on occasion still. maybe thats cause i was mixing the stuff in the bottle
don’t loose those little caps that they come with for traveling. i threw them away stupidly thinking i wouldn’t need them and many of times i have ended up with wet bags from a whole bottle

InactiveThose bottles ROCK!!! (the new Gerber ones) We switched to those after trying everything else and getting sick of using playtex drop ins. I mean these bottles are the only thing DD will take. Plus the quality is very good, they are inexpensive and the nipple holes handle rice cereal – even the slow one!
Try it for yourself! let us know how it works for you.

InactiveI shake aidans, but I stirred it until he was about 5 months old, then I got sick of the stirring, but his also had cereal in it which I think made it less bubbly. I’ve never had an issue with anything getting clogged up when I shake it. (I do however shake them REALLY hard, then let the bottle rest for about 5 mins to settle it down)

how are the nipples? are they sturdier than that playtex ones? my son would always collapse the playtex ones becaues he is so used to the avent ones.

thats interesting. so some people CAN shake up formula in the DB’s with no problems….hmmm

InactiveI use the Dr. Browns and what I do is use one of the bottle caps that comes on the little 2 ounce and 4 ounce formula bottles that they send home with you from the hospital. I saved the six caps that I had, and I use them to cover and shake or store forumula in the Dr. Brown Bottles, and then remove the cover and stick the valve and nipple in when ready to feed. It works great. I know you’re using Neocate so you probably don’t want to order any of the 2 ounce bottles of similac from Ross, but you may be able to just ask for a few from the hopsital where you had Trace.
Natalia…I was confused when I wrote this and forgot that you use Avent bottles…
….but for anyone else if you’re using Dr. Brown’s and mixing powdered formula and/or cereal; the little caps on the 2 ounce bottles of Similac/Isomil work great on the Dr. Brown bottles. I’ve been using them for years to mix/shake/store formula and breast milk in Dr. Brown bottles.ndrose2006-10-22 9:45:49

InactiveWierd. Maybe our bottles are different here. I’ve NEVER been able to shake! If the valve is in when mixing then it all just clogs up and makes a mess. If the valve is out, then I’m covered with formula that comes leaking everywhere.
I’ve always had to stir, pick out all the lumps, stir again and then put the valve and cap on, and boy is it a royal pain. I use very little cereal- 1 tsp per 2 ounces, and a level 2 nipple. I feel like making her bottles is a like a horrific science experiment. With Sarah, I remember making the bottles in 10 seconds flat. With Hailey it takes about 3-5 minutes. At night it stinks!!! so I use a shaker bottle, and then pour into the DB, but it’s still a pain because it leaves me with so many bottles to wash.
I did figure out that I could successfully take the DB nipple and use it in an avent bottle, and it didn’t leak. But I don’t know if that has anything to do with the fact that our bottles are thickened. At this point, I just plan on riding it out until I can toss all of our bottles altogether.

[/QUOTE]The nipples are great, sturdy but not so ridged as the ones on Avent…my DD can’t get anything out of those. Plus, there is only one hole as opposed to multiple holes so the rice moves better through the nipple.

im sick of db bottlesOctober 22, 2006 at 3:11 pm #16378Anonymous
InactiveWhat’s this travel cap you guys are talking about for the DB bottles? I got my somewhat used from a friend, bought new nipples, but never had the packaging. I’ve always wondered why they would leak when I put them in a diaper bag!
