InactiveOk. I posted a while back and you ladies were very helpful. Hopefully I will have the same results this time.
My baby, now 9mo, has had reflux since birth. She was in the NICU for severe apnea. We have tried everything under the sun and nothing is working. She is on Prevacid 30mg and 1 ml Axid BID. She was on Zantac and that did nothing. We just started the Axid earlier this week and no results yet.She had an upper GI and it showed nothing but severe reflux. Now her Dr. is on the fence about a scope. She does not sleep. She stays asleep (if I can get her to fall asleep) for 45mins usually. Around the clock. She constantly nurses. She is in so much pain. She has this peircing screech, arches her back and vomits all night long. She won’t sleep with me or stay asleep on me. She was sleeping in her carseat, when she did sleep, up until a month ago but now she won’t sleep anywhere. All in all she is a happy baby. She has been crawling and walking on things for about a month now. She has a good weight, 18lbs. And she eats well. The Dr. mentioned Celiac would be next to rule out.I just am looking for some suggestions, support or a magic cure! Help me!I am really not doing well with this. I am not able to function. I have an almost 4yr old that is home with me as well. I can’t think straight, keep up with daily tasks anymore, I am really suffering. I have health issues myself that are making it all worse and I just don’t know what to do anymore!May 4, 2008 at 3:34 pm #51085Anonymous
InactiveFor us it took 3 things to fall into place before Paige was a happy baby and a better sleeper. First was a good dose of a PPI, which it seems like you have. Second, we had to get her onto foods that she could tolerate. For her, this was Neocate only. She couldn’t tolerate ANY solids whatsoever until about 13-14 months of age (but this isn’t the norm). Third, we had to have her bowels moving regularly, and avoid constipation at all cost.
My first question would be what is she eating? I see your signature says she is breast fed – so it is also important to examine what you are eating. Do you have milk or soy in your diet, in any form? Is she on any solids? Any supplemental formula (and if so, which one)? Sometimes just changing her diet (or your diet if you are breastfeeding) can make drastic improvements with reflux and GI problems, with milk and soy being the most common culprits. My second questions would be how are her bowel habits and BMs? Any constipation? Any mucus in the BM? Even after we had Paige’s meds and diet straightened out, she was very uncomfortable and a terrible sleeper until we addressed her chronic constipation.I understand how hard it is to try and function when you can’t get any quality of sleep. I’m sorry you are going through this too. Hopefully we can help you out a bit.MFPIx22008-05-04 15:36:33

InactiveNo formula. Taking soy and milk out of my diet didn’t work at all.
She is on baby food. I never thought this could bother her. She has had diareha for awhile but I do notice that when she has to poop she doesn’t sleep. Yogurt usually is enought to make her go.No mucus that I notice.May 4, 2008 at 8:28 pm #51093hellbennt
Keymasterwhen you took milk & soy out of your diet, was it all milk and soy, including ‘hidden’ milk like whey & casin & ‘hidden soy?
how long did you remove it from your diet?was it two complete weeks or even three weeks?May 4, 2008 at 9:34 pm #51104Anonymous
InactiveIt was about 4 weeks each time. I did it twice. Yes I read all the labels.

InactiveThat’s a tough one then. Once they’re on a good dose of a PPI given properly, and problems still remain, it’s often due to food intolerances and/or BM issues (providing there are no physical abnormalities shown on an upper GI).
What form of Prevacid is she on (solutabs, compounded, etc.) and how do you give it? What solids / baby food does she eat? Is there anyone with Celiac in the family? Perhaps a dairy, soy AND gluten free trial (for both of you) could help, or even TED. I know that’s an awful lot of work, but it could be worth trying if it might make her better.
And if all diet changes don’t help, then I guess a switch in PPI would be the next option. Has she tried others before (like Zegerid)? -
