InactiveMy son (a silent refluxer) is now 6 months old and suffers from constipation/ gas. This has been an ongoing thing since he was 3 months old. Before all of this started he was sleeping through the night (6-8 hrs.) now he waking every 1-3 hours and on a bad night he does not sleep unless he is held.
I actually remember the day it all began. It started with two HUGE watery bm’s (sorry for the tmi) and BOOM all of a sudden he stopped going and the gas set in. When we took him to the doctor we were told that it as normal for a breastfeed baby not to go and that the gas was probably related to the fact that he was not going as ofter (previously he went 6 to 8 times a day). We were told we needed to get his system regulated and give him fibery foods twice a day mixed with 2 teaspoons of benefiber.
Recently he has finally started to go but still never has full relief, the gas is still unbelievable, and his sleeping habits are getting worse. I am at a loss for what to do. We have another appointment with his GI thursday and I have video taped his behavior but still feel like I am going to come back with no answers.
On a normal day he strains and moans all day. When he goes to sleep he will sleep soundly and then wake suddenly and pull his knees to his chest (he sleeps on his tummy) cry and thrash around.
Does this sound similar to anything anyone has been through? I have always heard that if a breastfed baby is constipated it is normally a sign of a problem (this began before the introduction to solids) and yet no tests have been done. Should I be concerned that he is not getting proper care? Please help!

Keymastersounds like something in his diet/your diet…
he is still young enough for you to do the Total Elimination Diet..
my educated guess is that once you do the TED, you’ll find that there is a protein or proteins that he’s reacting to that is giving him the gas and the poop issues…
you can start w/ probiotics- read to find out brands and how to give to him

June 15, 2010 at 10:41 am #66482InactiveMy son suffered from chronic constipation starting at about 4-5 months until he finally outgrew it around 18 months. I tried everything and finally came to the following conclusions/solutions. Not all of these may apply to your baby but here goes;
Conclusions I made over months of trial and error;
1. His constipation was likely due to two things.
*DGE (delayed gastric emptying) Essentially this is low motility of the GI Tract. Other symptoms of DGE are lots of spitting up, and small appetite. DGE is usually outgrown with time and only needs to be treated if baby is not eating enough to thrive.
*Food sensitivities/intolerances. This is going to sound weird but I know without a doubt that the following list of foods always constipated him.
Soy products, bananas, apples, carrots, berries, corn, peas, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, rice, wheat products, white flour products, sugar, and possibly milk. Milk, soy, and corn products are classic foods for sensitivities/intolerances and constipation is a classic sign that the body cannot tolerate those foods. Most starches will constipate a prone child (peas, rice, corn, potatoes). White flour/sugar constipates even healthy people without intolerances.
Solutions:
This is what worked for my boy.
Oatmeal cereal (no rice or wheat cereals)
Benefiber
Pear Juice and Prune Juice
Flax Seed Oil (I think this is the most helpful of the remedies I used)
I used to put the benefiber and flax seed oil into his oatmeal twice per day, and I add an ounce of pear and prune juice mixture to his breast milk twice daily. If I gave him all of these remedies every day, he’d poop fine. If I skipped even one day, he’d be backed up immediately.
Broccoli always helped him poop. I used to puree tons of it and fed it to him almost daily for months. I’d puree it with water and pear juice. Pears were also very helpful. But apples, no way! Apples contain pectin which can be very binding.
Child sized glycerine suppositories can be very helpful and safe when needed.
I hope that helps some. My son completely outgrew his constipation problem and can eat pretty much anything he wants now as long as we don’t overdo certain foods like cheese, sugary foods, rice etc. He can eat anything in moderation.
