breastfeeding trouble

i’m wondering how much my one month old issue with my three month old is related to acid reflux: she’s been coming on and off the breast during the day, and now also the bottle. the difference, with me, it hurts. i can’t keep doing this. she just upped her dosage of zantac cause she is now 11 pounds, but she’s still having symptoms…i’m wondering if she somehow learned this head turning, pushing off the nipple behavior when she was in pain, and now does it proactively??? her whole body goes stiff, her face gets red and she twists her head so she’s off, then goes right back on and repeats. any thoughts?? help!!!!!!!!!!!

That sounds like she is in pain, that’s not proactive. It sounds like the Zantac isn’t doing it for her–you might want to try out a PPI like Prevacid, Prilosec, or Zegerid.

what colors are her stools? normal mustardy seedy breastfed baby stools? or are they green? frothy like shaving cream? stringy (mucousy)?

ally ‘s mom: does your child have saniford’s? i found info on this website then researched it today and THAT IS IT!!!! i am so relieved and concerned, and not sure where to turn.

laura, i just started to skim your info: sorry if this is in there, and tomorrow i’ll go through it all, but: the “mystery” to all the thousands (seemingly) of baffled lactation folks and professionals was why my daughter would systematically turn her head to one side, and push off the nipple then go back on, wishing to eat, then this behavior would dissipate during most night feedings. i read one study today that saniford’s is masked at night. i thought breastfeeding would be impossible forever and that i’d give it up after all my efforts and accept her “style” as some suggested. does this behavior sound to you like saniford’s? this ofcourse was accompanied by reflux-y behavior and an increasing dose of zantac. the first symptom i saw maybe two months ago (she’s three months now) had disappeared, that was the arching back and screaming. this was replaced about three weeks/ a month ago by the head turning,stiffening, etc.

Welcome – Zach was started on Zantac to but did not do much for
him. He would constantly arch his back and pull away from the
bottle too. Once he was put on Prevacid, he was a different baby.

Elaine, yes, Allison had Sandifer’s Syndrome. We had severe episodes that included arching, screaming, and turning red. They persisted until her reflux was properly treated. It sounds as though this is what you are dealing with. We tried Zantac first and it didn’t do anything for us. We then switched to Prilosec, a PPI, and it made a world of difference.

Jonah had Sandifer Symptoms before he was on the right medication & dose. It’s symptoms like back arching, stiffening a leg, twisting the head in one direction, & can also include seizure type episodes…i always use the symptoms as a barometer- as we got the meds figured out, the symptoms pretty much disappeared…

We had the same issues with Sandifer’s. Once we got her reflux under control with prevacid, the symptoms disappeared. Whenever they came back, we knew she needed a med increase.
