Breastfeeding with reflux

Hi. My name is Geraldine, my daughter Quinn is 3 months old, breastfed & has reflux. I’ve nannied for 20 yrs and have lots of experience with newborns & reflux but honestly you would think this was my first time. We have seen a GI and gone from Zantac to prevacid (1ml x 2 day). She also gets mylicon & gaviscon .3ml alternated, up to 3 x per day each. We also had x-rays done to rule out any kind of physical Issues (Besides slow empty of stomach, she’s fine). Although looking at her doubled in pain when her stomach spasms & hearing her scream, i beg to differ that she’s fine. I can hear everything entering her stomach-it sounds like a coffee perculator. She screams after every burp & very often refuses to finish a feed after her burp. I’ve used the AR pillow, tummy positions, Avent & Dr Brown bottles. She now refuses to nurse & quite frequently refuses the bottle too. I’m at my wits end with the discomfort & crying, I feel so hopeless & the look of pain & pure desperation on her face is awful.

Has anyone seen an improvement with changing to nutramagen or alimentum? Any advice would be great.

Both of my boys had to be on Nutramigen. Looking back, I think my youngest son should have been on Neocate or Elecare (very hypoallergenic formulas). It is heartbreaking when your baby/child is in pain… it is so extremely hard. Be sure to do research on this group. I lived on here back in ’03 – ’04 – there is tons of good info. My younger son had terrible reflux and he had to be on Prilosec until he was 16 months old… Nutramigen that long too. I had to keep both of my boys propped up all the time until they got older and did better. I bought a Tucker Sling for Jordan to sleep in at night. Like I always say, trust those mommy instincts… dont’ let a doctor blow you off and not take your concerns seriously! Hang in there… the good news is that most reflux babies really do get better and you move on out of this painful stage. My boys (both of them) lived on Mylanta! I bought the Mylanta Cherry Supreme because it did not contain aluminum (through my research, I found that is the best one). BUT, from what I’m reading on the forum now… I’m not sure they make it anymore. I have read that you can find a generic at CVS that does not contain aluminum. I kept it in my diaper bag and took it everywhere!

I just posted separately that I started Nutramigen on Saturday and we had 2-3 days of absolute bliss. I can’t believe my baby could be that happy, calm, and sweet. But then on the afternoon of the 3rd day he started refluxing again and now he is just as bad as before, if not worse.

My dr suggested I eliminate dairy and soy, which I did a few days ago but it will take a few weeks to know if it helped. I’m giving him about half Nutramigen and half breastmilk right now – mainly because my supply is lowered from not nursing for a few days and I missed pumping sessions the past two days since he was screaming for so many hours. I want to transition back to mostly breastmilk and eventually nursing again (I’m just pumping right now) but I don’t know if it will work. I go back to work Monday and can’t pump very frequently there.

I think you should talk to a pedi GI specialist. I have one I trust but I added Nutramigen without consulting her first because I was frustrated with seeing him in pain. Now I wish I had just followed her plan and waited for the diet change to kick in. It’s just so hard to watch him suffer.

Good luck and hang in there. We’ll all get through this somehow!

Thank you. My first stop was to change my diet but nothing made a difference 🙁

The prevacid helped a little after a few wks, for about a week & now it’s awful again. Just a tip, don’t have them add any flavor. As much as Quinn hates the flavor, I just found out that adding flavor basically makes the medication inactive after a week. We are just figuring this out now. I have another GI apt tomorrow & I’m taking in the Marci kids chart, I know 3mg/ml x 2 day is too small a doze for my 11lb/3 mth old baby. I was also told to give her Gaviscon, I didn’t think to check the ingredients as we use a Ped GI but I’ve just found out it has aluminum in it (very upset at myself & the Dr).

I’ll hopefully get further with Quinn’s care tomorrow.
