InactiveDS been on Omnicef x 7 days for sinus infection could this be why he is having such a bad week with reflux. He was always a silent refluxer and now he is full on 4 to 5 ounce refluxing 2 or 3 times a day x 4 days. So confused????

InactiveYES!!! I always noticed that my son’s reflux was worse on antibiotics too. They kill off all the good bacteria in the tummy, so digestion is even more difficult for them. I was on Ceftin awhile back for an ear infection and it gave me heart burn! The only other time I’ve had heart burn was when I was pregnant, so I know it was the antibiotics. I have no idea why.

InactiveInteresting. My wife was on 10 days of antibiotic for her breast infection (from clogged milk I guess) and we wondered if it was hurting poor baby. She is an average-bad refluxer from 2wks to current 7 weeks. Reflux started bad about when wife got on antibiotic and seems to be getting a little better now, although we’ve tried so many things we don’t know why exatly.
Could the antibiotic get into her milk and give the baby acid reflux? My wife had terrible heartburn while taking this antibiotic.April 8, 2008 at 5:05 pm #50077Anonymous
InactiveSeems to me that its either the antibiotic or the recent bought with stomach flu that does not seem to be clearing as fast as evryone else. Although when he pukes it is absolutely reflux and not the bug. I am adding in some zantac and we are gonna change to zegrid incase he has just outgrown the prevacid. Let me know if anyone else has had any similar issues.

Inactiveyes yes yes– antibiotics are Landen’s WORST enemy and flare up his reflux so bad! He cannot take Omnicef OR Augmentin for this reason. I always ask for azithromycin (sp) and he does much better, and I ALWAYS give Probiotics when he takes an antibiotic. One of the major reasons Landen’s pedi and I wanted landen to have tubes put in his ears was b/c of his GI problems/reflux with antibiotics!

InactiveAntibiotics are so hard on the gi system. I know many moms of non reflux babies that use probiotics just to help with digestion b/c they are so hard on the system. We use them all the time so the few times Coop has been on antibiotics I haven’t really noticed any changes. I will say that Zithromax (azithromycin) is much easier on the system than many others and it only has to be given for 5 days so I always ask for that one if given the option.
